Tale of the Tape: Sharks vs Tahs

Our friends at have sent me a boxing-like Tale of the Tape, for those that are not familiar with boxing, this compares the two boxer’s vital statistics, and as such, we will do a comparison on vital statistics between the Sharks and Waratahs based on their season averages so far. These stats are then also ranked per team, so if one of the teams are the worst at missed tackles, they will be ranked first.

Again I will only make the numbers clear and leave to you any conclusions that you can make from that. I am not going to make this a massive, intense article that you cannot absorb, so I am keeping it to only a few points that really stand out.

Surprisingly, a lot can made of the kicking out of hand numbers, which the Waratahs rank the highest in the competition in, making on average 27 kicks per game. The interesting part is the Sharks are best when kicking out of hand, with lowest ranking on kicks in error (this relates to kicking the ball out on the full etc). From what we saw the Waratahs doing last weekend, we can expect a fair few nudges and chips, so our back three will have to be on the ball.

A not so surprising stat is that of the handling errors, where I have explained before that RGS only count a handling error if it means loss of possession, and not like other sites where a loose pass and backwards drop counts as a handling error. The Sharks have the highest average of pure handling errors, but we all knew that this is a bit of a problem. What they can do to address this still baffles me, but it is a basic skill that will have to be worked on.

Lastly, something that I would not have noticed without the help of RGS, the Waratahs have the second highest amount of reset scrums in the competition, and this is where I think the Sharks need to focus and get penalties. Especially if they can pin them in their own half and force a few extra three pointers.

If there are any other specific stats that you would like to know, drop a comment and I will do my best to answer your questions.

On average, we concede more penalties at ruck time and we are the team most ruled offside.,

Waratahs are more prone to foul play penalties..

  • I am nervous for this game. Our game needs massive lifting – not just from last week, but in general – if we do not stop the rot in this game – then it is yet another season of The Sharks being their own worst enemies… I grow tired of being frustrated at them. Currie Cups are one thing – International tournament another.

  • Sharks only got 1 yellow this season – Bismark.
Waratahs only 2 – Mumm and Carter.

    Stormers on 7…

  • The Tale of the tape that the Waratahs are most worried about is the one for referee Jonathan Kaplan.

How many games have the Waratahs won compared to their opposition when JK refereed the match?

    Opponents 14
    Waratahs 2

  • @KSA spoken like a true ref! But that man cost us two consecutive matches through bad calls – the penalty try vs Waratahs and gave the line out to the Brumbies when they had kicked it out and should have gone to the Sharks and that gave them the winning try! So if not cheating then incompetent for sure. But sorry the blues complaine to SANZAR about his blowing of their game against Waratahs too many coincidences there sorry.

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 25) : and usually from the up and coming ones trying to make name for themselves. Combine that with having two Saffas on the line trying to show that they are not favouring the local team and we could easily see another “nothing call” 🙁

  • How our ruck sats?

Turn-overs at ruck time? Penalties at the ruck? I think that and general errors are the two things the sharks needs to work on the most.

We don’t get enough players to the point of contact fast enough. There’s always a delay and that gives the opposition a chance to latch on. Get the upper hand, win the penalty or turn over and if not, just make the ball very slow for the Sharks.

We need to take care of possession. Like we did last year. We keep losing the ball. How many different ways can you lose the ball? The sharks know all of them and they need to start eliminating them. It’s frustrating, because we’re not being beaten any more. We’re giving our wins anway!

We average 75 rucks/mauls a match, which is the 9th highest in the competition. The Tahs rank 5th in this regard.

Lost possession at ruck time – 3 a match avg (4th lowest)

Penalties conceded at ruck time – 5 a match (5th lowest)

I also shout in every game for the people to get to the BALL and SUPPORT!! But there seems to be quite a lack of urgency and we tend to lose the ball or get a penealty for holding on – like Beast did last weekend..

  • Bottom line, the Tahs has a good touring record in SA and can beat any team in SA on any day. We will have to pitch up for this one and play to the best of our abilities if we want to take away 5 points. Anything less could spell disaster for the men in black.

  • Even though Deysel has yet to find form and confidence, I think this is the game where his momentum will gather steam – we need him to be the juggernaut that he is… I actually quite like the look of this loose trio – Botes, Deysel, Keegs – I want to see Keegs and Botes feeding off the momentum that Deysel will hopefully get us – and I want to see him standing more in the midfield with Bismarck as the first receiving strike runner, I hope Mostert gets some solid game time and trust that we can be more intelligent and creative when bringing in JPP and Mvovo – I like this wing combo – and I would like to see Oddie being used more at Fullback where he and Ludik can rotate to stay fresh.

Talking of freshness – we really missed a trick with rotation here this season – a lot more players deserved more game time JLP and Swannie spring to mind here and I look forward to seeing them get some game too…

I hope Hargreaves’ column springs true and the boys show some grit and determination…
