WBHS v KES a spectator’s thoughts

Westville Boys High School played against the visiting King Edward School from Johannesburg on there much loved Bowden’s field on Saturday.

It was a good close game even though Westville lost it 21-10. Westville missed all of their kicks, including two conversions and three penalties. They also had a torrid time in the lineouts losing quite a few at crucial times of the match. Both teams defense was outstanding, and if there was one thing to be positive was the way Westville put their bodies on the line.

I would have had a day program and known the players but since it was Old Boys day, they decided to make paper jets of mine. Some of the players that impressed me were the loose head prop from Westville, who did Beast like runs. Jackson Buthelezi the flank was also outstanding, and his tackling was superb for such a small guy, proving the reason why he was selected in the Craven week side. Tyler Fischer also did a class act and marshaled the backline well. Rumors are that he and the Westville wing are being head hunted by Jake White and the Brumbies. Mention must also go to the fullback as well; infact what the hell the entire backline form Westville out shone the men in red.

KES did well in the forward battle, and stuck to their strengths. They have some massive players, and one wonders what they eat in JHB.

Unfortunately there was one shocking incident that has to be mentioned that made me sick. KES were on Westville’s try line and Westville were defending well. There was a massive tackle by one of the WBHS player. It was not dangerous as I was sitting right there. Suddenly two KES coaches ran from the other side of the field, to the referee, and began screaming at him that it was a dangerous tackle. The crowd was in shock as these sorts of things don’t really happen in KZN. The ref was a nice guy, but if I was him I would have given KES a penalty against them. Hope this stuff gets kicked out of school boys’ rugby.

Overall it was a good match. One felt that Westville lost the game by not having a quality kicker in the team and the skew line outs attacking in KES twenty-two did not help either.

They are playing in Vryheid next week let’s hope it goes well.

  • @Mocho (Comment 2) : From the FNB Classic against Kearsney I can tell you the #1 was Ste Sithole and the #3 was Jason de Broize.

I am not sure about today’s game. Waiting for an answer from De broize’s mother.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 3) : Yeah true. Those Vaalies are a hot headed bunch lol. Thing is Westville lost two games in a row that they could have won if they had a kicker.

  • @Mocho (Comment 7) : And they changed the kicker from the last game to this game if I’m correct.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 5) : Think it was Ste. We must try and hold on to Fisher. He could be the next Lambie, and solve our centre issues.

  • Okay I have confirmation that Ste played at #1 today.

Jason De broize has been asked to be at KP on Monday for U/19 CC trials. (he is at the Sharks Academy next year)

  • @Mocho (Comment 16) : Well Done Mocho. I watched the game. Thought that KES played very well. They dominated the setpieces and they were the more creative side in the back division.
The Westville players are Sithembiso (abr to S’the, nickname Stiee) Sithole (no.1) and u16a fullback Louis Snyman, who I really felt for.

I like your scrumhalf Dylan Marcus but for the slight drop off that comes with big grade 11 no.9 Cameron Wright, who can kick at goal, that would have been my switch to overcome the kicking issue.
BTW the first choice kicker, David Watkeys, who played fullback in last year’s first team is out for the season following what looked like a knee injury against Michaelhouse in game 1 or 2 of the season.

  • For everyone wanting to see a player with star qualities didn’t have to look much further than KES’s blindside flanker Malcolm Marx, who is still in gr.11. He is a sportman of note. Try to image Willem Alberts aged 18. This kid has that kind of frame. A very good player and a name worth remembering. Catch him in a Lions Craven Week match if you missed him this time round.

It would be nice to get some KES guys to compare him to Big Joe van Niekerk.

  • Nice write up Mocho..
Did you see the Sunday Times lead story this weekend.
That probably goes a long way in answering your question

“They have some massive players, and one wonders what they eat in JHB.”

If you havent seen the article here is a link,

KES featuring prominently in the article.

  • David Watkeys tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament, has had an op but will be out for the whole season.Very unfortuante. Westville no 14 was Louis Snyman (u16 player) , the fullback was Dylan Aylward, and no 11 was Keagan Boulle.
Thanks for a great write up!!

  • @Tracy Boulle (Comment 24) : Dear Tracy, please stay away from Bryce that WP scout. He is bad news. Also try to avoid contact with the Campbells. I know a nice gentleman called Hans who can give you more tips on how to give family friends and former 1st team players’ mothers that wear Stormers outfits every Saturday, the cold shoulder  Jokes!

BTW Keegan’s having a super season.

  • All round a pleasing performance from the WBHS 1st XV. what the guys need to do is take the good out of the game and improve on that and limit the errors in the lineouts and get confidence back in kicking for polls. They also knocked on at times when they were looking dangerous.
KES was also fortunate to score a try that was blatant obstruction. I guess when it’s not your day, it’s not your day.
Westville need to get the ball out to the talented outside centre and left wing more often.
The next big game will be the Glenwood clash.
Lets see what the Geen Machine has to offer.
