The Sharks managed a good performance against the Waratahs on Friday night, winning by 26 points to 21, in a score that was not quite as flattering as it should have been. Let’s have a look at how the players faired individually.

1.John Smit 6/10 – Had a quiet game by his high standards and did take some flack in the scrums, but lead the team well. It seemed as if the team was calmer and more composed under pressure, but his defence looked a bit shaky.

2.Bismarck du Plessis 7/10 – Also stuttered in the scrums, but the line outs did improve. Carried the ball decently in the loose.

3.Eugene van Staden 6/10 – Another forward that did not have a spectacular game, but that could mean that he was busy in the rucks (we will have to wait and see what the stats tell us).

4.Steven Sykes 6/10 – Literally played out of his boots in his fiftieth game, Sykes did well in the lineouts and was active in the loose.

5.Al Hargreaves 7/10 – Slowly starting to find some decent form, both locks improved to the point where no lineouts were lost.

6.Jacques Botes 6/10 – Another player who had a rather quiet game. Didn’t do anything wrong, but I didn’t see much of him.

7.Jean Deysel 6/10 – Probably his best game so far this season, just a shame he had a brain fart and went all WWE in the ruck. Busiest of the forwards on the night.

8.Keegan Daniel 7/10 – Was all over the park as usual, and will not be looking forward to giving up the 8 jersey to Kanko. Well played son!

9.Conrad Hoffmann 7/10 – In the short time that he was on the park, he did not really put a foot wrong. It’s a shame he couldn’t show us more, but he looks a more than capable player.

10.Pat Lambie 8/10 – After a few disappointing games after coming back from injury, Lambie looked his old self again, running at the defence like we all know he can. Top kicking performance as well!

11.Lwazi Mvovo 6/10 – A quiet game out on the wing, looked to get involved once Pietersen got going, but we need more from this explosive runner.

12.Meyer Bosman 6/10 – Playing outside such a good flyhalf, and getting such good ball, one would think he would do a bit more on attack with it. His defence again was tested, and even though he missed a few tackles, looked better.

13.Stefan Terblanche 6/10 – The other half of the misfiring centres. He looked to get in the way a bit in the first half, and only runs straight at the defence without looking for the offload.

14.JP Pietersen 9/10 – Great showing from Pietersen, and to quote Plumtree: “He is in a great place at the moment”. Looking forward to seeing more of this from the big wing.

15.Louis Ludik 7/10 – Solid showing from the back, he was always in position and ready to counter, even though he ran into walls every time. Could vary his game a bit more on attack.

16.Beast Mtawarira 6/10 – Came on for Smit and stabilised the scrums, and made a few glory runs standing at first receiver. Quiet by his standards.

17.Wiehahn Herbst – Not on long enough to rate

18.Gerhard Mostert 6/10 – Came on and made no real impact. Good to see him on the park though, and looking forward to seeing more of him at lock.

19.Willem Alberts 6/10 – Came off the bench and showed that fresh legs used in the second half of the game can add value as he made a good few yards on attack.

20.Charl McLeod 7/10 – Came on early in the game, and played better than he has most of the season. His above-the-head-trick pass to Lambie is getting old now.

21.Jacques-Louis Potgieter – Was not used as far as I can remember

22.Riaan Swanepoel – Not on long enough to get a rating.

  • some interesting ratings

I feel you have been too kind to Hargreaves,Bosman and Terblanche.
Also Deysel had a commanding game and should be between a 7 and 8.
Mvovo 5 as he saw no ball.
Ludick between 5 and 6 as he needs to remove blinkers. he runs well but needs to free up his outside backs.

We need our players to play with purpose. the Sharks lack structure of late and will be punished by harder running teams, as already witnessed.

I would be seriously tempted to start Swanepoel at 12 in order to tighten up that channel. Too many tries have been leaked in that channel by Bosman and I sure hope it doesnt cost us in a play off game, in fact every week is a play off now.
Please get Mvovo more ball and more involved.
    Go Sharks.

  • If I was the coach for some weird unexplanable, bizarre freaky reason leading up to this weeks game against the cheetahs this would be my 22 man squad.

    15. Stefan Terblanche
    14. JP Pietersen
    13. Marius Joubert
    12. Patrick Lambie/ Riaan Swanepoel
    11. Lwazi Mvovo
    10. Patrick Lambie/ Jaque Louis Potgieter (if Lambie was 12)
    09. Mcleod
    08. Daniel
    07. Deysel ( provided he isnt suspended, if not Alberts)
    06. Jacque Botes
    05. Mostert/Skeate
    04. Sykes
    03. Van Staden
    02. Bismarck Du Plessis
    01. Tendai Mtawarira (realistically Smit is gonna get a run, rather at 2)

    16. Burden ( this game is goin to open up like a can of worms)
    17. Smit / Wiehan
    18. Alberts
    19. Marcell Coetzee
    20. Hoffman (if injured Ross/Guy Cronje)
    21. JLP or Bosman
    22. Adrian Jacobs if fit or Ludick

    Thats taking injuries into consideration.
But lucky im not coach i guess

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : Good Point but its worth noting that Beast/Bissie/Jannie play better at Bok level as they have the heavier duo of Bakkies/Victor “Locking” the scrum.

This was for years WP problem of having a tight five as they had Bekker/Skeate as their combo.

With Sykes and Hargreaves as our 04/05 they are hardly adding that much beef to our front rows hynies

  • I think we are being ‘too nice’ to our Springbok captain. Ok so he is being played out of position but we have to rate him on where and how he played.

    Now compare the following:

1.John Smit 6/10 – Had a quiet game by his high standards and did take some flack in the scrums, but lead the team well. It seemed as if the team was calmer and more composed under pressure, but his defence looked a bit shaky.

    with

4.Steven Sykes 6/10 – Literally played out of his boots in his fiftieth game, Sykes did well in the lineouts and was active in the loose.

Now reading those 2 paragrahs……how can they both get a 6/10?

Syksie probably should be a 6 but the Smit can’t be more that a 3 or at a push a 4.

  • Bosman and Terblanche irritated me the entire game and less said the better. Especially Bosman I do not think he deserves 6.

Also feel that Rob was rather generous for Hargreaves.

Deysel really played well but this brain explosion was so… really brain explosion and could have cost the Sharks dearly.

I didnt mean that the ‘out-of-his-boots’ comment as a good thing..

He sat down three times to put his boots back on. I think Steven had an okayish game, nothing special..

But I do hear what you are saying, and my initial thought was to rate Smit a 5..

  • @Pokkel (Comment 8) : Agreed.
I feel so badly for smit. The guy is a legend but how can you go on playing top level rugby when clearly you are been scrutinized so intensley every game. Good Ol Captain Smit was always a controversial selection in 2004 as Bok captain and in 2007 there were only 2 hookers who could challenge him and that was Bissie and Gary Botha (who was the initial backup even when he came to play at the sharks) but now in 2011 he has Bissie,Adriaan Strauss,Liebenberg,Britz,Botha,Chilliboy and to a certain extent even Maku playing so much better than him.

Can he play better than Beast,Gurthro,Coenie at loosehead or Jannie, Mujati, Kruger etc at tighthead. In all likelyhood not.

If anything Smit is head and shoulders amongst most men in terms of been resilient and been tough skinned. He really has nerves of steel to continue amidst the controversy.
Go Smit, Go Sharks, Go Boks !!!

And please when we travel to Bloem let’s just leave Meyer there. 🙄 I know I am very critical 😳 but I’ve been hoping for him to shine for so long now that I am running out of patience.
I think the best thing he did was the conversion against the Lions (after JLP’s boot failing constantly) and then he got himself injured

  • The biggest concern for the Sharks remains the fact that they are not really creating try scoring opportuinities. Both tries were scored due to individual brilliance and not because of creative attack.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 29) : excatly.

What ever happened to scoring off set pieces uses players individual brilliance?

I guess thats what you get when most of your 1st phase ball is 9 to 10 to 13 who runs back and sideways then goes to ground, holds on,gets penalised or goes to ground commiting 4 forwards loosing any chance of an overlap thus creating pressure on our scrummie to clear and do a box kick , commiting 2 chasers and having no1 back home for a counter. SUCKS.

Lets hope Rudolf Strueli invests in backline specialists for currie cup.

Finishing is also a problem but when was the last time you saw the Sharks perform a successful set move like bringing the fullback into the line at an angle. Why isn’t Mvovo being used more on the attack. It’s easy for us to say that Mvovo isn’t looking for enough work but why aren’t we creating more opportuinities for Mvovo? Get the man more involved.

The centres did better than before – hence the wings getting the ball with some space. More of the same please!

Van Staden was getting nailed as much, if not more than Smit. Herbst creamed Robinson – still a great prospect despite injury.

Lets just try and finish above as many other SA sides now as possible.

Claremont lost friday night so I hope Joubert joined the rest of our squad in training this morning already.

Give Swanepoel and Joubert a start, move ST to fullback.
Not saying it`ll completely solve our problem but at least we`ll have ST and MJ in the positions they are most familiar with.

I agree that grant10’s fixation on Smit is a bit strange, especially given what ole Barney as done for his country, against all sorts of odds.

I’ve found his non-Smit posts interesting and objective – especially since he is a WP fan who takes the time to post about the Sharks.

Maybe we just need to find ways to distract him from Smit? 😆

Im not quite sure what you are here to achieve..

Maybe you like pissing others off.. If so, you sure are achieving it..

Regarding Smit, I agree that he might not be the best in any of the positions that he is being played in at the moment, but he does not pick himself and plays for the team.

And he makes a heluva captain!

  • JPP was awesome! So illusive. Lwazi Mvovo needs to up his game big time. He needs to get his head back in it and go and look for some work. He’s starting to play like a 3rd choice winger.

  • @Mocho (Comment 58) : No. It’s just a hobby. I started going it to keep KZN in the picture and create some excitement around our players. I want to speak to those that run the show there to try harder to incorp junior rugby into the site once the C/C starts. I think that would be awesome if the u19s could get more exposure and become household names so people want to go early to watch them play.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 62) : His probably a knowledgeable person and his insight is valuable. His anti-smit agenda is doing nothing for his credibility.

  • @Mocho (Comment 67) : Ya definitely. I’ll get in touch on this board just before the game. It’s at Glenwood on 18 June. Like your picture, it will be the last game in the jersey for many Westville players.

  • Generally the tight 5 score was too high with exception of Bismark…he was very good in general play…

Mvovo scored too high…he sis nothing….
Hofman scored too high…he was on the field for a shorter time than Riaan Swnepole not?

    Ludick scored too high…

I think you need to bump up Alberts…and if Geysel did not get that yellow I would have said the same for him…

Daniel gave away too many penalties…and 2 were kickble and landed if not mistaken…

  • Far too generous with Alistair Hargreaves. His weakness at scrum time is putting the Sharks under extreme pressure.
