The Crusaders have a bye this weekend, but their star centre will be getting into the boxing ring for his fourth professional boxing fight against Tongan Alipate Liava’a. Sonny Bill Williams is taking to the ring to raise money for the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake appeal.
Williams has fought and won three times before, beating his opponents in 226 seconds, 150 seconds and by unanimous decision, not a bad record for a part time boxer. His opponent this time around is a 43 year old who has lost his last seven bouts, so it should not be a problem for the big centre.
Williams will be donating $100,000 to the Red Cross. We wish him all the best in this fantastic initiative and hope he does not get injured.

Cannot wait for the 40 second youtube video on this fight!
What weight division does Sonny fight in? Heavy weight most likely.
@Ben (Comment 2) :
He is a heavyweight yes..
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Thanks…
When will he be fighting a real boxer?
So far it’s been a bunch of lard-arses who can barely stand up straight on their own, let alone move around and through a punch. 🙄
Sonny-boy be warned. This is what Fatboy had to say earlier:
“I’m skilful and I can fight inside and outside, but I’m not going there to box – I’m ready to pull out those bombs,” he said.
“I’m going to go in and throw bombs on him. If I connect with those punches, he’ll be gone.”
A gospel singer, Liava’a is using his purse to help with the release of his new album, One Man Choir.
Oh, and he’s 43.
😆 😆 😆 😆 😆
@McLovin (Comment 6) :
That is quite interesting..
Looking forward to it..
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : As a fund raiser it’s superb. As a boxing match, it’s a waste of time.
I hope a few of those ‘bombs’ land. 😈
@McLovin (Comment 8) :
That would be nice 😈
Isn’t there an age restriction on pro-boxers?
Taking shots to the head is never good, but when you’re in your mid-forties? 🙄
@McLovin (Comment 5) : That is why he is probably allowed to fight,because he fights against no names,what a bad ass.
@McLovin (Comment 6) : ag… sbw’s inside skills are rubbish on the outside yes he can hurt these blokes since he has better reach and probably bigger guns…
until he fights a real boxer – he should try 46yr old bernard hopkins – then i won’t rate him as a boxer.
From stuff.co.nz:
The charity boxing match between Sonny Bill Williams and Alipate Liava’a will go ahead this weekend despite revelations that Liava’a has been receiving a sickness benefit.
The Tongan gospel singer has been claiming a benefit for an injured elbow, 3News reported last night.
Promoter Khoder Nasser said he was not concerned, instead, it made him feel at ease as both opponents had “niggles”.
Work and Income said it had suspended Liava’a’s payments last week after it became aware of his plans to get into the boxing ring. It would review his eligibility for the benefit, which is based on a medical assessment by a doctor.
Liava’a, 43, said his tennis elbow prevented him from working but the injury was not bad enough to stop him boxing this Sunday in Auckland.
“It’s very bad, but it’s good enough to hit somebody. But honestly, it’s not 100 per cent – don’t tell Sonny Bill.”
🙄 😆 🙄
@McLovin (Comment 13) : I was about to comment on this article, thanks for posting it.
You have to be amazed at how different news agencies put different spins on things. News24 pulled no punches with theirs. “Sonny-bill fights disabled man” 😯
I have to ask though. In how many societies around the world can you draw unemployment benefits for having tennis elbow?
Sonny-boy won on points.
So he beat a fat, gospel-singing, middle-aged man with tennis elbow on points. 🙄
@McLovin (Comment 16) : 🙂
@McLovin (Comment 16) : Haha 🙄
He should fight against Manu Tuilagi.
well this boxing think i really don’t like at all, when gets punched to the head it may just end up a sombie and then in the long run its not worth it, but what i do get out of this is the money that is been raised for those who need it must say and sorry to he has [email protected] 🙂
but now is the really Q if he gets hurt well then the Rugby game is a out for him 😉
@McLovin (Comment 16) : ouch
hahaha
@McLovin (Comment 13) : he one bad dude his health comes first but then i don’t think at all he cares he is more worried about hitting SB
but i guess the health rules don’t apply in Boxing at all
