SANZAR CEO Greg Peters has suggested that the confusing Super Rugby competition rule that sees teams awarded points for not playing may well be scrapped.
In a recent interview with SuperSport.com, Peters admitted that the mechanism, which generally leads to much annoyance among fans who feel like they’re being treated like numpties, has not been universally popular and may well fall away once the review of the first season has been completed. Currently, each team who has a bye is awarded 4 log points. Since each team has exactly two byes during the course of the season, these additional points serve no discernable purpose.
C’mon, SANZAR… just drop this mess. It was a pretty silly idea to start with and if the constant stream of vitriol on Twitter is anything to go by, the fans hate it. It adds nothing and makes it MORE difficult to judge where teams are relative to each other, not less so.
Another possible change is the ruling that will see one of the South African side always have a bye in the first round. SANZAR as considering spreading the first round bye across the three conferences on a round-robin basis.

I like it, it kinda keeps me on my toes, using the maths I used to scoff at: “When will I ever use this in the real world?”.
@molly (Comment 1) : LOL
@robdylan (Comment 2) : The sad thing is… not even a calculator will help 😐
Good. One of their doffest ideas. Will be glad if they get rid of it. 😎

What a dumb rule!
@blackshark – the lurker (Comment 5) : And E=MC2?? 😉
@diablo (Comment 6) : no… mc2
Can we please implement the rule that gives the Crusaders the last round bye every season. The rest helps them in the playoffs. 😆
How in the world can they justify a rule that requires the first round bye to always be an SA team?
@diablo (Comment 6) : Thanks, but you got my drift – at least I did not say mc3
This 4 point rule is a real joke. Makes absolutely no sense, no matter which way you look at it. Here’s a maths sequence. SANZAR = Idiots.
Accrding to Super Rugby TV viewership in SA is down 15% on the 2010 figures. Derby matches viewership is down 9.8%. He got these figures Courtesy RepucomSA. .

well for one think that to get points for not playing is bull [email protected]

@Ben (Comment 10) : 😯

mmmmm
Yeah this 4 points crap screws us over pretty well this weekend.
No matter how well we do this weekend we CANNOT move up on the log, courtesy of the Saders getting 4 points for doing nothing.
Yes I know we already have those 4 points and it would all even out in the end, but I am trying to illustrate my frustration with the principle.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 17) :
amen so they must get rid of all points that have been given for the Buys
but then again who came up with that idea in the first place
@chaz (Comment 18) : Points for a bye is an Aussie thing. We all know they don’t have a problem with it because they are not bright enough to notice the discrepancy between games won and points earned.
But we should not be surprised, calculating log points is not the 1st thing that comes to mind when thinking about the Aussies……
Great idea to get rid of the bye points and I’m shocked to hear that SA wouldve gotten the 1st round bye everytime 👿
I forgot to make my FL changes 😯 😳 If I can stay in the top 20 it will be a miracle. 😥 🙁 😥
Going into the 16th round I can say that I don’t like this new format at all.
More (dull) derbies are NOT what I want to see! That’s what the Currie Cup is for. It’s boring to think that the Sharks will be playing the Bulls, Stormers, Lions and Cheetahs AGAIN in the Currie Cup in just a few months time.
I want to see the Sharks play the best of the foreign teams, the Crusaders, Reds, Blues, etc.
This new format also has me wishing losses on the other SA teams and I’m a little uncomfortable/uneasy with it. I much preferred the old system which engendered a spirit of patriotism.
The 4 pts for a bye is just plain silly.
And rewarding the top 6 teams with a “play off”, IMO it should just be the top 4 competing in semis.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 19) : you can say that again
