Pinning our hopes on the Stormers

When a big derby game between local rivals comes up, as a supposedly neutral observer, one can generally find several reasons to support either team. Given that our motivation is generally the seeking of whatever outcome will best suit the Sharks, though, I feel we need to back only one team this weekend – the Stormers.

That statement might seem strange on the surface, since, due to the nature of the Super Rugby conference system, we’ve spent pretty much the last two months hoping and praying for a Stormers loss every week, in the hope that it would open up top spot in the South African conference for the Sharks. The Durbanites are, after all, only 6 points behind the Stormers and could surely capitalise from a slip-up against the Bulls on Saturday?

Looking at this in the harsh light of day, though, I truly feel that our ship has sailed in terms of finishing on top of the South African conference log. By losing to the Stormers home and away, the Sharks have allowed them to build up too big a lead to expect to realistically haul them in over just two rounds. We’d be banking on them losing both of their next two games – and the Sharks winning both of theirs – which I feel is a really big ask.

If the Stormers do lose to the Bulls this weekend, they’ll need a victory against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein to seal top spot, which really ins’t a huge ask (as the Sharks found out). Assuming that the Sharks pick up four or five points in Joburg this weekend (which is in itself a big assumption), then next week’s match at Loftus would become a knockout match, with whichever team loses knocked back either into 6th place, or more likely right out of contention altogether.

Should the Stormers win, though, again assuming the Sharks prevail in Joburg, the match at Loftus would be less significant for the Sharks, as the Bulls would probably no longer be able to haul them in. That said, depending on how well the Waratahs do over the coming fortnight, the Sharks may still need a point or two from the Loftus trip to stay safe.

The light at the end of the tunnel, dim though it may be, lies in the patchy form of the Blues at this stage. Pat Lam’s side are losing everything at the moment and with derbies against the Crusaders and Highlanders still to play, they could still end up below the Sharks. It will take a herculean effort from our boys, but there’s a glimmer of hope that the prize for victory over the Bullls may be a fourth-place finish, with a home knock-out against those self-same Blues to come the week after.

For that to happen, though, we need the Stormers, Highlanders and – most vitally – our own Sharks to show some superb form over the next two weeks. It’s all to play for in Super Rugby!

  • make sense to support the stormers as we have nothing to gain if they lose. they will beat the cheetahs next w-end so we won’t finish first. we need to win this w-end, because i don’t think we will win the bulls on loftus.

  • This is the easy way out. I want the Sharks to end as high up on the final table as possible, first or second would be nice and for this to happen the Stormers need to lose both games sans any bonus points and the Sharks need to win both with full points. So no, my hopes arent pinned on the Stormers but rather on the Bulls.
Of course my wish is highly unlikely if not downright impossible but that to me would serve the Sharks the best.

  • I actually want the Bulls to beat the Stormers on Saturday ,Sharks to beat the Lions and the Waratahs to lose. This will ensure that we finish with 3 teams in the top 6. I want that more than I want the Stormers to win this thing (becoming more and more a reality).

  • I don’t care who wins this game. I never like it when the Bulls win and knowing that a loss here will possibly cost them a play-off spot will just sweaten the deal for me, but if the Stormers looses here then the untimate optimistic that I am will still see that hope of the Sharks ending 1st in the SA confrence.

I don’t want to lose against the Bulls in the final round anyway, if the Sharks can’t up their game to win that game then maybe it would be better if it would cost us a spot in the play-offs. Who wants to go into a top 6 knowing that the posiibility of a victory against almost all of them has become very slim to say the least.

    That’s mypoint of view.

I can’t hope for the Stormers to win this weekend, because that would mean I supporting against the last chance the Sharks had to go into the 1st spot on the SA confrence.

But like I said, I wouldn’t mind going into the Bulls game knowing that a win will kick them out of the whole thing.

On evidence of the above, maybe I care about who wins here more than I thought, I’m just not sure who that team is yet.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 18) : You’re right, becuase if the Sharks win both their next games and the Stormers end up losing against the Cheetahs then we’re really gonna feel like fools for not just going with the Bulls for this one.

  • @Talent (Comment 22) : Yes, MK is a cretin hobbit who cant find consistency in any of his rants. Last year he wrote a long article accusing Sharks supporters of always blaming the referee after the Sharks lose, then wrote a whiny crybaby piece about how the Stormers were robbed in the final by the ref. I also enjoyed his comments that the Sharks are to the super 14 what Real Madrid is to the champions league… I guess he meant that in recent years both teams have flattered to deceive, but seeing as Real Madrid have won more Champions league titles than any other team in history, the comparison rather falls flat. Ironically he is probably also responsible for the Stormers blowing one of their best chances at a super rugby title when in 1999 he broke the news that the Stormers players were in a battle against management and may not take the field in their super 12 home semi. The media storm was immediate, the fan reaction intense and the hapless Stormers were blown away on home turf… too funny.
