Swannie signs with Clermont

Sharks centre Riaan Swanepoel has signed with French side Clermont, according to the club’s website.

The chunky midfielder, a regular in the Sharks Super 14 starting lineup in 2009 and 2010, has struggled to make the first side in 2011 and has featured more regularly for the Vodacom Cup team this year. According to the report on the Clermont website, the 25-year-old will join up with them when his current Sharks contract expires on 30 October.

The Sharks will most likely opt to release Swanepoel at the end of the current Super Rugby season, though, if recent precedent is anything to go by.

More on this one as it unfolds.

  • Saddened by this. Although Swannie never set the world alight, he was also never afforded the opportunity of an extended run on Pat Lambie’s outside, which as we saw was what changed Dries Strauss from pariah to everyone’s favourite centre… 🙁

A bit excessive, but while I wish Swanepoel all the best, fact of the matter is that he was never going to win games for us.

I wish all those leaving the Tank all the best, but if a smaller payroll means we recruit and retain the cream, then I am all for it.

  • I always viewed Swannie and Dries as the same sort of player. Solid defenders but not the best of attackers and opening up the field and play for those outside of them.

The challenge for the Sharks is to find an inside centre (from inside our existing structures or recruit if REALLY necessary – I hear Nonu looking for a new team 👿 ) who is a great defender and creative player.

ALTHOUGH it might not be necessary and maybe the kind of inside centre we need IS the great defender because Lambie is so creative at FH.

And Strauss did remarkably well for us. Will Swanepoel do the same? Based on pedigree or past experience? Probably not.

Do we keep every single player passing through Durban just on the off-chance that they play to the level that Strauss did? I say no – let’s rather focus on young talent.
