Three Sharks start for Baby Boks

SA under 20 coach Dawie Theron has named his side to take on Soctland in the Baby Boks’ opening fixture of the IRB Junior World Championships in Italy. The inclusion of Sevens star Paul Jordaan at outside centre will raise a few expectant eyebrows amongst Sharks fans.

Jordaan, a schoolboy legend at flyhalf and inside centre, might just come into the reckoning to fill the problematic 13 jersey for the Sharks at senior level, should he make a success of the new position. His partner at centre is the Bulls’ Francois Ventre, also vice captain of the team.

Two more Sharks feature in the pack, with Nic Schonert getting the nod at tighthead prop and Green Machine opensider Franna Kleinhans entrusted with the number 6 jersey. Bulls eighthman Arno Botha will captain the side.

The game kicks off at 20h10 South African time on Friday night and will be live n Superspot 1.

SA U20 Team to face Scotland – 15 Ulrich Beyers, 14 Tshotsho Mbovane, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Wandile Mjekevu, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Pieter Rademan, 8 Arno Botha (capt), 7 Siyamthanda Kolisi, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Eben Etzebeth, 4 Jean Cook, 3 Nic Schonert, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Juan Schoeman. Reserves: 16 Micheal van Vuuren, 17 John Roy Jenkinson, 18 Ruan Venter, 19 Cornell du Preez, 20 Lohan Jacobs, 21 John Welthagen, 22 Craig Barry.

And if that doesn’t work, he can solve the more than problematic 12 jersey problem for the Sharks. πŸ˜›

  • I rate Paul Jordaan at 13 better than William Small Smith of my bulls under 19 side in in fact the paarl gimnasium outside centre christopher bosch is class he will push william….

The biggest disappointment is the omission of Piet Lindeque i heard he has to improve his defence but it’s a travisty him and venter are amean centre pairing..Bradly Moolman is talented but abit small.

Admittedly many of your posts revolve around how the Bulls with their unquenchable appetite have gobbled up yet another youngster whose name starts with T-A-L and ends with E-N-T and amount to very sad news but I always say its better to have heard and cried than to not have heard at all.

To say you’re just a Bulls supporter is an understatement of note.

It just so happened that on the final day I parked next to a knowledge able gentleman from Empangeni who sat next to Dries’ father during that match. We had a chat after the game while waiting and he said that Dries’ folks farm near the Botswana border and support the Bulls and he is all set to go to the Bulls next year.

However WP have now gone with Tim Swiel out of position. He’s another unbelievably good player at 15. I don’t think he’s going to have the space to shine at 10.

  • @Muzi (Comment 57) : I actually really like Nardus and his super injection of pace. But 2 things about him. 1) he seems a bit on the small side for a Bulls no.8 2)his naysayers think he’s selfish and that nothing good ever comes from those trademark runs of his coz he can’t link. Sounds a bit like Kanko who often put the blinkers when he went on a gallop back in the day. (the day being 2010 and before πŸ™ ).

  • @Ben (Comment 59) : Ben, I think we need to test Paul in various positions to see where he fits best. Obviously we have a great need at 13 but that’s right now. In a couple of year’s time things might change. Paul is one of those gifted players who can do well in any possie from 10-15. Just like Lambie, we need to arrive at a winner-winner situation for team and player.

  • @Ben (Comment 65) : I’m the last guy to ask but he’s about 1.80m and he should be at about 90kgs by now. This is a problem I have with 7s. Once upon a time, playing 7s complimented 15-man rugby. Now in terms of dimensions, it’s becoming evident that the more athletically built you are, the better you perform in the 14min game. So I think Paul’s weigh gain programme is a little behind schedule. It’s not the be and end all tho but a lot of emphasis is placed on it nevertheless.

  • @Muzi (Comment 63) : Muzi, when Piet got promoted to u21 last season, it was evident that he wasn’t ready for the level yet but once back in u19 you could see the quality. In the Vodacom Cup this year, they played him on the wing for a bit and again ?marks, his positional play left a bit to be desired. Not every player has to be fast-tracked and not every SA schools player is going to make the grade. But you might be right, a bit of politics. It would be a surprise to me tho. Piet was such a high profile signing. I remember I was on cloud 9 when I found out he was coming to the Sharks.

There are a lot of people, here at Sharksworld as well that think junior rugby is a snapshot with a beginning and an end. Not true, its always been a rolling picture. There were good players that came before and there will be good players that come after “a star” in any given year.
