Sharks forced to change approach?

The fact that the Sharks will go into this weekend’s match against the Lions without any of their primary forwards ball-carriers in the starting lineup will necessitate a change to the “bash it up” game plan that has been used all season. Assuming the coaching staff realise this and have made the necessary adjustments, Saturday might just prove the start of an unlikely renaissance of a Sharks game-plan based on skill, rather than brawn.

The Sharks have been criticised this year for seemingly having nothing to offer other than “Plan A” (or “Plan Alberts” as a quick-witted friend suggested to me recently), using Willem Alberts as a battering ram to cross the advantage line and create momentum. Bismarck du Plessis and Jean Deysel have played a similar role, but as the tactic has become so ubiquitous, opposition coaches have found it increasingly easy to predict and defend against. Crucially, the Sharks have found themselves comprehensively beaten by both the Bulls and the Stormers (twice) in this year’s competition, with the opposition realising that all they have to do is gang-tackle the big ball-carriers behind the advantage line in order to prevent the Sharks from playing. When starved of momentum and robbed of possession, the Sharks suddenly look pedestrian and plan-less and are relatively easy to thwart.

The overuse injury that has ruled Alberts out of Saturday’s derby may prove a blessing in disguise. Deysel is also unavailable through suspension, while the coaches have sensibly decided to rest du Plessis as well, after the hooker has started all but two of the Sharks’ 14 games to date. The resulting changes to the pack see Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes combine as a pacy and skillful, yet ultimately very light, flank pair and with this week’s number 7 weighing a full 25kg less than the man he’s replacing, any thought of playing crash-ball rugby using a big forward to bash it up ad nauseam must surely be shelved. The Sharks simply don’t have the personnel to do it this week.

What they do have, though, is skill – and lots of it. Daniel, Botes and number 8 Ryan Kankowski have always been the sorts of players who would rather run at the spaces between defenders than at the defenders themselves, but I feel that the game plan employed thus far in 2011 has tended to neutralise these instincts. With the Sharks having picked probably their strongest available scrumming tight five this week, there is the potential to use that set piece as a platform off which to launch attacking moves that allow the pace and individual skills of the loose trio to be best utilised. The key here must be continuity and avoidance of creating breakdown situations through going to ground, because the loose forward combination is far more geared towards fireworks with ball in hand than it is to grovelling for it on the ground. Here, Meyer Bosman’s eye for the offload must be utilised to its fullest, with one of the loose forwards constantly on alert run off him, make a half break and then bring one of the dangerous wingers in once a little space has been created.

With a glut of additional flair available on the bench, in the form of Fred Michalak, Adi Jacobs, Alistair Hargreaves and Marcell Coetzee, the Sharks should be able to maintain a high-pace game for the full 80 minutes. For those yearning for a little bit of old-school Sharks “in-your-face” play, though, the prospect of Bismarck du Plessis unleashing his own personal version of “the fury” in the last half an hour should hopefully suffice.

  • I have serious doubts in our ability to suddenly play a different game to the one we’ve been attempting all year. We are bloody far off the team of last year’s Currie Cup and things aren’t suddenly going to change. My big worry is that we’re going to play expansively without “earning the right”, which will suite the Lions to a T.

  • It will be exiting to see if the guys can change the game plan. Every time Keegs and Kanho play together they seem to always look for the of load and running of each other. So maybe it will come naturally…

  • Reading on of the articles on the official Sharks site suggests otherwise unless Plum has suddenly become sneaky in his approach.

I hope we see the approach you suggest but I think the bashing job will just go to the Beast and Smit TBH.

  • I am looking forward to see them return to the fast pace game they played in last years Currie Cup. But for that type of game McCloed needs to be on song. He needs to return to the basics that he did so well last year. Getting the ball out quick and cleanly to whomever is at 1st receiver at that specific moment. This thing he does lately of standing shaking his head and trying to persuade the ref to give the penalty must stop. He must just go do his maths again and he will realise that tries is worth way more than penalties any way.

  • We have to play intelligent rugby this week to win. Replacing mindless bashing with willy nilly throwing of the ball around won’t work. Ball retention is key, the Lions thrive on those chances especially if their confidence is up, which it should be after their tour.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 9) : The reason Charl is struggling is that we have been dominated at the breakdowns, because of our easy-to-defend-against, one-dimensional bashitupatallcosts approach.

During last year’s CC he didn’t have to fight at every ruck to dig the ball out from under our players’ legs, plus he had a solid scrum and lineout platform to work from. These are all aspecs of the game in which we have been poor this year.

By the time Hoffman subs (subbed) McLeod the game is usually in its final stages and way more open, thus making his service seem quicker.

  • Rob agree with you 100%

When you and i spoke i too said the only way to use this trio properly is to play a full brand of running rugby , we dont have th enough ball carriers in the team tomorrow to play the usual style

In some ways this is exactly what we need , a very fast high tempo match , the Lions have just come back from their tour to the Highveld, surely running them tired would be the right way to go

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 39) : you reckon the sharks can with not-so-mobile john can keep up with the lions?

i’ve always believed even if a team wants to put on a show of “running rugby” they have to lay the platform first and that means DOMINATE the collisions and boss the breakdown to ensure quick ball. if the lions are tackling every runner backwards there will be NO ball to run with.

  • Were playing a team thats playing an openside flanker at lock! To me our locks hold the key to the match. If they can start dominating the lions physically at ruck time it will free up our loosies to a bit to run. Expect the gaps to be around the fringes and not out wide (unless JP decides to run around his outside man again!)

Talking about wings does anyone know why the lions are playing Killian off the bench! I really rated him last yr

  • @rhineshark (Comment 33) : I disagree. That is not the reason for Charl being so slow. Sure if they clean the rucks quicker and get front foot ball the ball will be available quicker. I do agree that this is a problem but Charl’s problem is something much different. The problem is what Charl does when the ball is available, he stands their looking around first before he makes his choice. Another thing is he takes 2 or 3 steps in the ball receiver direction before he passes, sure that only takes about a second but a second can be vital for defences to reorganise. All of these stuff that he does eats up time which means the opposition’s defensive line has valuable seconds more to reorganise. Quicker ball means more space and holes to run into. Does this make any sense to you?
