Sykes in doubt for Loftus

Lock Steven Sykes sustained a knee injury against the Lions at Coca Cola Park on Saturday that looks likely to rule him out for this weekend’s game against the Bulls at Loftus.

Should the Sharks fail to beat the Bulls and advance to the play-offs, it means that Sykes, who will join Irish side Leinster after the conclusion of the Super Rugby season, will already have played his last game for the Durban side. Gerhard Mostert and Alistair Hargreaves will no doubt form the starting lock partnership against the Bulls, with either Anton Bresler or Ross Skeate coming into the match 22 as cover.

In other injury news, both Jannie du Plessis and (surprisingly) Odwa Ndungane look set to come into the selection frame this week, along with Jean Deysel, whose suspension for a dangerous tackle against the Waratahs has now ended. Willem Alberts, who was forced to withdraw from the team to face the Lions, is still struggling with a shoulder injury, though and will again be assessed later in the week.

  • What has happened to ross skeate??

  • mostert and ali will form a good combination. just have a feeling our super rugby season ends this saturday. we don’t have the balls to beat the bulls at loftus. this is actually very sad, because i thought that this was our season to win it, but we don’t look like champion material. plum must start to play mcleod at 9, fred at 10, mvovo 11, meyer 12, adi 13, jp 14, pat 15. it’s all we can do now. hope for the best sharkies. pray you prove me wrong

  • @jovner (Comment 4) : I have the opposite feeling for this game. Think when we desperate we play our best. We will throw everthing at them. We have nothing to lose, much like we had nothing to lose in the 2nd half on Saturday. Had we not started to play like we done after 55min we were dead and buried.

Think Sharks could win this week.

  • Not to be ugly guys but us sharks supporters must be some of the worse supporters I have come across..that’s why our boys struggle because it comes from the fans who don’t back the guys up..a draw and its all doom n gloom..come on..the bulls are tough but no one is unbeatable..we as a supporter should be confident no matter where the boys stand on the log or how many games they lost…

  • If Alberts can’t make it this week hopefully Brumbies beat The Tahs or we Beat The Bulls. As Long as we can have him for the Knockouts…would be great to have him back this weekend, though.

  • @pete69 (Comment 1) : Would you not prefer Bresler? Skeate is too one dimensional and in my opinion can’t really do enough hard work come ruck time…Bresler is a Beast at clearing out and his Physical approach makes a good impact off the bench. If Sykes is out i really hope Bresler makes the bench and not Skeato.

  • @shaniboi (Comment 6) : Agree, Shark Supporters should be supporting their team win or lose. We should get to Loftus in huge numbers and go and support our boys.

If we had won got the 4 points or got the 2 points for a draw, it made no difference, we would still have to go to Loftus to beat the Bulls to make the play offs. We must all get behind our Sharks and support them.

    Go Sharks.

  • @Puma (Comment 9) : when did we ever stop supporting the team, though? Being critical when a team full of great players continues to deliver sub-par performances hardly means we’re not supporters… it just means we’re not blind!

  • @shaniboi (Comment 6) : not really, its just very frustrating when every game for the last 6 or so weeks follows the same script. Play crap in the first half, wake up in the second.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Rob, I was agreeing with shaiboi’s post 6. Rightfully so.

Did you reserve your tongue lashing only for me? πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜›

Look for course we can have constructive criticism of our team. But really I have read around blogland some Shark Supporters just losing it with our team. Not great to read some comments. I remember supporting Natal now Sharks way back from 1981 and we won nothing then until 1990. I never ever gave up on my team then, when we hardly won a thing and won’t now. Support them win or lose buddy. Right now they need our support more than hearing all the woes of the past season.

This is a big game at Loftus this Saturday. We should just get behind our team and support em. Hope whoever lives up there goes in numbers.

Like I had said a few days before here and somewhere here again, winning the game would have made no difference. Sharks would still have to beat the Bulls this week had we won or had a draw. BUT getting the draw the way we came back in the 2nd half sure as hell did. Not only did it give us 2 points, it must have given the team a massive boost, what they can do when they set about it.

Look I have also got frustrated with our team at times. Had we won some games we should have won earlier in the season, we might have avoided this pressure game on Saturday. We just have to forget about all that, it won’t change anything. Our support will. We need to just support them no matter what now.

  • @Puma (Comment 16) : but the point that you guys are missing is this… just because you chose to criticise the poor performances doesn’t mean you no longer support the team.

The problem with people who have been supporting Natal rugby since the 80s is that you unfortunately have the expectation of mediocrity ingrained on your psyche. You need to move on from that Banana Boys vibe a little. We are no longer the fun-loving long-haired underdogs who just want to give the big boys an occasional scare. We are a highly-professional team full of internationals who SHOULD be challenging hard for silverware in every competition.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : these are very wise words – but then when someone criticizes the team after shocking (not even a mediocre) performance is immediately blasted at that we need to support, not criticise, no personal attacks etc. ble bleble – you get the point πŸ˜‰

  • @rekinek (Comment 19) : hang on – there’s a difference between fair criticism of the performance and personal attacks against the individual.

So it’s ok to say “I believe Plumtree’s selections for this game were idiotic” but not to say “Plumtree is a f***ing idiot”…. big difference.

In the former case, of course, if you can back up your opinion with some solid points, so much the better.

  • let me make this very clear… I think the Sharks have been pretty close to awful all season. There have been brief interludes of good play in between, but for the most part, they have dished up horribly uninspiring and ineffective rugby.

I am well within my rights to say this because I consider it to be true. That’s what my opinion is and I will back it up with as much evidence as you want me to.

Me saying that does not mean that I no longer support them. That’s like suggesting that I stop loving my children whenever they are naughty.

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : there was a moment here that statements β€œI believe Plumtree’s selections for this game were idiotic” were considered personal attacks – that’s my hang up.
Me thinks criticism can be healthy and most importantly deserved if a professional team does not perform.

  • @rekinek (Comment 22) : hang on… are you saying that I created that impression?

Maybe I did… maybe I’ve changed my own mind on what counts as acceptable criticism as the team’s standard of play has declined

    I’m only human after all.

But I’m not sure I agree… I remember having the argument about some or other player… I maintained it was ok to say “Pat did the following that was crap” rather than just to say “Pat was crap”… to my mind, “XXX was crap” is a personal attack. Maybe using the word “idiotic” in any context is a personal attack? Hard to say…

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : I see, I am a easy target cause I hardly say anything back….hehehe. You know the laid back Banana Boy from the past…….hehehe. Just joking. No problems mate.

@robdylan (Comment 18) : Not missing any point Rob. Of course supporters that criticise the poor perfomances, do still support our team. I know that. Also understand them getting frustasted with the team. But that where supporters should draw the line. Constructive criticism is always good. It is the really vitriol stuff I have read from some Shark Supporters that is really not on. Sharks don’t need that type of supporter buddy. I do have to admit I have not really read anything else but constructive critism about our Sharks on this blog. I am talking about other blogs.

You know we from the 80’s that supported Natal now Sharks are real die hard supporters.. hehe. πŸ˜› We suffered a lot those days, but stood by our team and was rewarded with the magnificent 90’s team. Also in the past 10 years. So yes, we oldies too expect our highly proffessional team to do well. But we know how to handle the losses better the the younger okes of today…lol. Rob, we were not only known as the Banana Boys, but the Beach Fairies, Surfer Boykies. You name it we were called it….hahaha. We took it well I tell ya…haha. I have a good laugh now when I look back.

I am just as anti the sweeping statements as you are, but I’m also passed to stage where I feel I need to shut up about the glaring problems in order to keep people happy.

If people want to read positive, glowing stories about how great the Sharks are every week, then they have the official website for that.

  • Rob, Also when I supported Shaniboi’s post. I also meant, let us support our team by going in numbers to Loftus.

Jeez, look at the English Cricket team of the past, they were useless and their supporters just kept on supporting them, by going to their games in huge numbers with non-stop singing through out. Even WHILE LOSING! The reason the Aussies gave them the name “Barmy Army”

Now we don’t have to sing…..hahaha. Just get there in numbers to support our boys. Cause Loftus gonna be full of Blue. Would be nice to see the same as we saw on Saturday at the Coke Can. Mostly Shark Supporters in the stands. Whether we can get tickets I have no idea. Probably the whole of Pretoria will be at Loftus.
