Good news for Sharks and Alberts

While there have been some conflicting reports to day as to whether Willem Alberts is likely to be fit in time for this weekend’s crunch Super Rugby encounter between the Sharks and the Bulls at Loftus Versveld, Sharksworld has learned that the big loose forward stands a very good chance of playing.

Sharks team doctor, Ewoudt van der Linde confirmed that while Alberts, nicknamed “Big Vic” by his teammates, is indeed stil struggling with a chronic shoulder injury, he is “very likely” to be passed fit to play when he undergoes a fitness test on Thursday. That should leave the Sharks very close to full strength, with only Steven Sykes still likely to miss out. Other players looking to return from injury this week are Jannie du Plessis and Odwa Ndungane.

Speaking of loose forwards, another big ball carrier comes back into the fray this week after sitting out a two-week suspension and Jean Deysel confirmed to Sharksworld that he simply “can’t wait” to get back onto the field. The Sharks coaches will have a tough time selecting a loose-forward combination for this weekend’s game. In addition to Alberts and Deysel, Ryan Kankowski, Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes are all available too and the temptation may well be to stick an extra forward on the bench in order to accommodate all five of those players in the match 22.

Complicating things further, another loose forward, 20-year-old Marcell Coetzee, was one of the most impressive players against the Lions last weekend and it would be a tough call indeed to omit him entirely for the trip to Loftus. Alberts has, in the past, been pressed into service as a makeshift lock and while it would be risky to do so, the Sharks may well opt to include the former Lion in the number 18 jersey this week, allowing Coetzee to remain in the mix.

  • Would love to see Bresler in the mix as well. Really like him!!! The heart and character he plays with is what is missing from some of our senior locks…

  • Prior to the injury, Big Vic’s form has been on a steady decline, and he’s been looking fatigued. Jean Deysel (before committing that Du Plessis against the Waratahs) looked to be on the up and up. In lieu of that, I would start with Jean, and keep Willem on the bench as insurance.

  • CS, with regards to Deysel’s brain fart, please explain to me something that as a. A girl and b. Volatile Itie I really don’t understand about rugby: why is retaliation considered worse than the catalyst so a man with adrenalin pumping should allow all and sundry to punch him etc and hope the ref notices, like in the Sharks game at Newlands!

  • Will make buggerall difference whether Alberts is fit or not. Our game plan will be the exact same, predictable crap. Even with three of the most mobile loosies on the park against the Lions we still tried the bash-it-up bollocks that passes as a game plan these days.

  • I am happy as long as we do not revert back to Plan A again. I would leave Alberts on the bench and bring him on for the last 30 minutes. If we can stay close untill then he just might pull it through for us.

  • I’ll be glad if everybody is fit and Plum can select the best possible team. IMO Odwa was our best back pre-injury and I hope he’ll be top notch. I’ll even play him at 13 if I had the power

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 5) : It doesnt seem fair does it, but if retaliation was allowed it would lead to full on free for alls with team mates joining in to defend their buddies.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 9) : I’d rather Odwa sit on the bench behind Mvovo and Pietersen, truthfully.
@Original Pierre (Comment 13) : 100% correct. Big Vic was not exactly a force to be reckoned with the last time around. I don’t think we should pin our hopes on him.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 14) : agree. But we just dont have the physicallity. We need to counter bakkies, danie and co… With Bismarck only? And then he’ll probably loose his cool, and give away about 4 slap bang in front penalties.

  • @ Salmanoid & Just a fan, I agree with that, I’m not arguing against the punishment just feel both should cop punishment not just the one that retaliates

  • @CapeShark (Comment 14) : He probably will play of the bench. Just say that imo he offers more on attack and defence that ST currently does.

  • @siorc (Comment 17) : Wonder if it`s for real this time.
As I recall our ref changed right at the last minute for our past two matches?

    On a different note:
What happened to the Butch James Citing?

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 19) : Butch’s hearing is only tomorrow. Apparently Saru published Jonker’s name wrongly for the Sharks v Lions game, he was never supposed to ref the game.
