I believe in miracles…

Well. Here we are then. Coming right down to it. D-Day. Do-or-die day. It’s been a road of thrills and spills, fraught with frustration for all of us, team and supporters alike. It’s also been a journey punctuated by some truly awful and truly awesome rugby – mostly in every game!

We’ve had glimpses of the brilliance we all know The Sharks are capable of, the kind that leaves us all breathless and in a state of rapture, but not enough to spare us the pressure of the coming crunch at Loftus on Saturday.

We can debate (and have, indeed debated, long and hard) on where we have gone wrong, on whether the team selected to run out against the Bulls in a few hours’ time is the best we have, and on whether the coaching and management team have done the right thing. But once we take the field it matters not a jot. Our team’s fate will rest in their own hands, and with the Big Referee upstairs (and I don’t mean the TMO!)

I have no doubt that there will be some serious prayers in the Black and White locker room. And a fair few in the stands, as well as TV rooms, pubs, bars and lapas across the nation and even those beyond our borders, wherever a Sharks flag flies. And this much I know for a fact – prayers are ALWAYS answered, even though sometimes the answer is not what we were expecting.

So come what may on Saturday, in my mind the outcome will be what it is supposed to be. Win or Lose. And part of a plan that we are not privy to. I have accepted that. And perhaps if we can all accept that, team included, and forget what has led us to this point, just relax and focus all of the positive energy we can muster on the task at hand, maybe, just maybe, we’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Over the preceding months much has been written on this wonderful site of ours about the role of supporters and being positive. I’ve been rapped on the knuckles more than once for being school-marmish in my gung-ho calls for happy, smiley faces and positive attitudes. And today I have had my own mantra tested to the limit with the shifting of furniture in the Sharks backline… πŸ˜† But if there was ever a time to be a real supporter, one who stands behind their team, no matter what the odds, that time is now.

I believe in miracles. And I believe that we can make them happen if we really focus, together, at the same time, and will our team on. I saw it happen last week at the Coke Can formerly known as Ellis Park. I saw supporters who refused to accept that the game was over at 30-9 down lift the spirits of a team that everyone had written off, including themselves. I saw a captain standing on the sidelines amazed at the incredible energy coming from those stands. Applauding it. Cheering it on.

As disappointed and critical as we are, we all share a common thread – a deep, abiding love for our team. And believe me that our team reciprocates. We are connected. We are one and the same. Part of the whole. We may not always agree, and sometimes actively disagree, but that love doesn’t waver. Nor should it.

Yes. Perhaps we should be realistic, put our heads above our hearts and expect a Bulls win on Saturday. But if we all do this, aren’t we precipitating that defeat? If we feel like this then why are we going en masse to the battlefield to shout for our side?

I’ll tell you why, because even when the chips are down and the odds are stacked against us, there is always a chance. And that’s when miracles happen. If we really believe that they can.

I am going to be away from SW till Sunday dawns… So I leave you all with this:

WE CAN WIN. Believe it. Make it happen. 😎

  • In this you are so right, my friend. I DO believe we can do it. And I also know that my dreams for our team could be shattered, but I prefer to choose the first. Call me a masochist if you want! And what better way to start our play offs or even end our season – with a bunch of Supporters ….at least I won’t be alone in defeat nor victory!!

  • Of Course we Can win. We can Beat anyone if we really want to…and that is the main thing 4 me…do we really want it. We start to doubt how much The Sharks want to win when a Team of such Quality underperforms the way The Sharks have for most of the season. All i can say is…if we beat The Bulls this weekend i will confidently say we can lift The Superugby title that has been ripped out of The Sharks grasp on a number of occasions.
Main thing for Saturady is…”Do you really want it Enough? If so; fight, fight and fight some more, until victory are the words coming out of your mouth!!!” C’mon The Mighty Sharks!!!!

  • I think the sharks will win i have a bad feeling about this saturdays match…..
 The bulls do not deserve to win the super 15 comp they are my team BUT it’s simple they have been kak this year  something has to give in the players will eventually get tired playing 8 finals with BMT .The senior players want to leave a legacy behind for the venters..arno botha’s ect…the bad form will haunt them in my honest opinion.

The sharks love playing at loftus and the sharks know how to beat the bulls at loftus i get the feeling that they have left everything too late….this bulls side is actually not even playing like last years side we are just hanging on by a thread i believe we are still vulnerable….Morne Steyn looks abit static wth hougaard…our backline can not even do one simple move
People in this website will be abit shocked or let’s say surprised by what i am saying we won the 3 super 14 titles at HOME not away…home ground is a huge advantage.
What makes me nervous is that when our game plan or our forwards do not dominate we DO not have a plan B like the crusaders or the reds who always come up with somethig new after half time.

    Go bulls

Forget this crap about praying and stuff, just believe we gonna win have no doubt in ur mind regardless who we play or past results and I’m sure we will win!!!! And it took a kid to make me see that

  • Yes, the Sharks can win.

But based on the way the team has played in the last 11 games I doubt they will as I doubt they want it enough.

I’ve seen this all before from the Sharks to get too carried away with false hope this time.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they beat the Bulls, surprised yes, but making the expanded 6 team play off has been the Sharks’ major goal since losing to the Stormers 2nd time round (rather than topping the conference and seriously contending for the title… reckon the doubts started creeping in smack bang in the middle of that first half against the Crusaders…). So if they achieve their mediocre goal, what then? I can’t see them winning 3 away games on the trot.

Sorry to spoil the party (bring a sense of realism).

  • If Bulls win vs The Sharks its over for any other team ,theyl land in super play of mode and be to strong . Sharks on the other hand dont have the back bone . Even if they beat the bulls they will be physicaly exhausted and will strugle to get back up to that mental peak needed to lift your game .I have lost faith in the Sharks ,the selfish Sharks. I would be happy to win this weekend but not overly concerned if we dont ,jeez im so negative/apathetic .If the Bulls win I will cheer for them to win the title.

  • @Talent (Comment 15) : dude, I doubt the Bulls would be able to win 2 or possibly 3 away knockout games to lift the cup.

In Super history – where there have only previously been 2 knockout games, a semi and final – only one team has ever won an away semi and away final… the Crusaders in 1999.

And the Bulls this year have their weaknesses…

  • Oh and from the first three games I complained about the sharks lack of heart. Who wants to bet we will win the cc this year? Once the s15 title is wraped up we can redeem some pride ,pat ourselves on the back for winning the cc

Sharks shine up ,play for the team this weekend ,play like any other game should be played …like its the last. Unfortunately it wont be the last ,even if we get messed up this weekend plumtree will select the same players.

I am a bitter person thanks to you sharks ,I now watch super rugby alone on my couch picking my belly button ,thing is i would go and watch them but they never turn up to play (they just get the job done)

  • @siorc (Comment 16) : I dont know ,ill put my neck out there and call the Bulls to win it if they beat us this weekend. They are a heavy boulder on a steep slope at the moment. Unless they have a brain fart moment in a crucial part of the game that ends up costing them (like a yellow card to bakkies in a tight tight game). One thing I love about the Bulls(becuase i am secretly a bulls fan after being a sharks fan)is they would rather be stretcherd of than walk of with their heads hanging in their chests, im sure if given a choice between the g.a.g and the baby blue jerseys they would choose to be a bull.

Ugh. I can’t bring myself to support the Bulls or the Stormers. Our main rivals. No way.

If the Sharks can’t win it I’d rather the Crusaders win it again. Been there, done that, and got used to it, just like when the sun comes up.

Can’t stomach any other SA side winning Super rugby when the Sharks don’t.

Everything points to a bulls victory, but knowing the sharks they like to lose to the worst and pull out all the stops against the best, plus the fact that plums thrown a bit of caution to the wind means we definately have a sniff. I, like others feel an upset is on the cards and if not lets at least go out guns a blazin’!

Bottom line we can debate, moan and discuss all day here it wouldn`t make any difference.
No I don`t agree with the team selection.
Yes I`m very disappointed with our season.
But there`s still some bragging rights up for grabs and although I critisize and complain I`ll be hoping for the best and cheering the boys on tomorrow.

I`m sure I`m not the only one here who loves nothing more than getting a result against the Bulls ?

  • I’ve come to the point where I prefer expecting us to get hammered and then enjoying the surprise when we win, rather than going into the game all positive and then having to swallow the bile of another disappointing performance. It’s simply much better for my blood pressure, my wife’s mood, our dogs’ nerves and our relationship with the neighbours.

So I will approach the game tomorrow as a supporter of the Sharks as underdogs, who are a decent enough Currie Cup side, but not good enough to beat a resurgent Bulls side at Loftus – a team that knows how to make it to a Super Rugby final and go on to win it.

From a different perspective, just about all my brother-in-law’s family and friends are staunch Bulls supporters and they are all worried… 😯

  • If we could play for 80min instead of 40min, like we done in the 2nd half against Lions last week and the Saders, we could beat any team in this tourney. We have the players. Sure our midfield is not great, but we can still do it.

We have not played to our true potential this whole tourney. Tomrrow could just be the day we do.

Go blow em away Sharks.. 😎

  • Whoever wins tomorrow a monster travel awaits that team.

Will have to travel to NZ probably to play the Blues, then head back to SA to play Stormers, then head straight back to OZ/NZ to play the Reds or Saders. That is if the team who wins tomorrow beats the Blues and Stormers. Can any team travel that much win this tourney? I doubt it. So the travel factor will be in it again and even worse than what the Sharks had to do earlier this season. Hectic.

If Sharks or Bulls have to do that travel and win this tourney, that will be the greatest win in SuperRugby ever. Cause of the hectic travel involved.

Wonder if our boys are thinking about just that? It sure can’t be a motivating factor.

Just have to see after tomorrow how it all ends. One way or other the saffa team that ends 2nd in our conference will have to travel. If Tahs lose it means Sharks and Bulls will have to travel.
