Michalak starts at flyhalf for Sharks

In an anticipated change, French flyhalf Fred Michalak has been named to start for the Sharks at Loftus this weekend, with Pat Lambie replacing Louis Ludik in the number 15 jersey.

In a team that shows a number of changes to the starting unit that performed so poorly against the Lions, several players have paid the price. John Smit is demoted to the bench this week, with Eugene van Staden, Jacques Botes and Steven Sykes missing out entirely (although the latter is injured). Bismarck du Plessis starts at hooker, with fit-again brother Jannie starting alongside him in place of van Staden. Gerhard Mostert partners Alistair Hargreaves at lock, with Beast Mtawarira continuing at loosehead prop.

Amongst the loose forwards, Jean Deysel returns from suspension to come straight in at number 7, with Keegan Daniel moving to the other side of the scrum to replace Botes at 6. Ryan Kankowski retains the number 8 jersey, while it is encouraging to note that Wiehahn Herbst and Marcell Coetzee, both of whom had a huge impact in the second half last week, have been retained. Ross Skeate and Willem Alberts make up the balance of a 5-man forward bench.

Apart from Lambie moving to the back and Michalak coming in at ten, the backline is unchanged, with Stefan Terblanche again assuming the captaincy. Adi Jacobs and Ludik are the two back replacements.

Just MAYBE Plum does actually learn. Marcell and Willem together could cause some mayhem in the second half

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 19) : I just can’t see why Van Staden would drop out of the 22 altogether. He is a very good bench option as he is comfortable on either side of the scrum and enjoys a run or two as well. The other possibility is that Plum is backing a young homegrown tighthead in Herbst which is most certainly not a bad thing.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 28) : @Honey Badger (Comment 33) : Fred is a Shark. He therefore has my support. And I am happy to overlook his Frenchness because I have no love for the land of my birth and the dogma it perpetuates. However, when I nailed my colours to Mr Lambie’s mast I did so from a deep-seated conviction that he will prove to be the best flyhalf South Africa has yet produced and is a natural successor to Morne Steyn, ultimately possessing more talent and potential. I am not about to get drawn back into the argument about whether his move to 15 is reasonable, given the circumstances, because it is for Mr Plumtree to decide where best to position the talent he has, given the opposition facing us on Saturday.
However, I do not agree with it. And reserve my right not to agree with it.
Pat will always benefit from any situation he is placed in because of his positive attitude, natural humility and incredible work ethic. And I have no doubt he will shine no matter what number he wears.
He is a well-oiled cog in a machine, but it’s a machine that’s not running well because other cogs are not as well-oiled. And as any mechanic will tell you, there is only so much tinkering you can do before the whole thing packs up and has to be completely rebuilt. Time will tell how much mileage we get out of this bit of tinkering.

  • I think Lambie is stronger defensively than Ludik. I read a very interesting article during the EOYT, specifically about playing Frans Steyn at 15 and why 15 is the best position for an individual with superior all around talent (like both Steyn and Lambie possess). The theory being that a team can focus an a great and talented player at 10 and essentially take them out of the game, whereas at fullback, it is very difficult if not impossible to device a scheme that would limit the talented players effectiveness. Very interesting article, and it certainly could be applied to Lambie. Playing at 15 also allows the talented player more time to make something happen, a counter attacking fullback has more time to make things happen than an attacking 10.

I am not saying I think that Lambie should be moved to 15 permanently, simply trying to say that this is not necessarily a bad thing for this and perhaps a few more matches. Bottom line is that Lambie will be the Sharks and (hopefully) Bok 10 for a long time to come.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 48) : Yes, it can mess up the fullback, however, the fullback can also overcome weaknesses in the centres and himself set the wings off. I am not going to argue that we don’t have a problem in the centres, especially at 13, I have been saying for quite some time now that we have this problem. However, without replacing Oom Stef, the only other option to try to involve the wings is to get a fullback in who can actually distribute. I can’t remember the last time Ludik passed the ball going into contact. The only time he passes is if the defender is at least 10 metres away.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 48) : Incompetent centres can not mess up a fullback counter-attacking. And if the wings support him like they should, they will have opportunities to run off him, something they do not have with Ludik.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 40) : I don’t think people are saying that Pat is a fullback. He is a flyhalf,a very good one but our current situation needs intervention. Stef can’t be dropped and even if he is moved to fullback, he won’t offer us what we need from the back, a player that will involve our wings that are playing well at the moment. Lambie is our only option especially since we have Freddie. Let’s get behind the team, they have a huge mountain to climb on Saturday.

  • Comment 52, posted at 16.06.11 17:14:00 by GreatSharksays Reply

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 47) : Which is why I understand the need for the move in the short term, even though I don’t agree with it. The fact is that it is a band-aid borne from desperation and does not address the overall problem, which will remain with us as we go into our defence of the Currie Cup. Especially if Lambie joins the Bok squad.
My main concern is that by sticking the proverbial finger in the dyke, we are effectively treading water while we wait for the dam to burst (how about that for three aquatic phrases in a row?!)
But as I said, I appreciate that this weekend, the end justifies the means. I just hope and pray it pays off.

  • Here is my one concern with Michalak, when he was with the Sharks before, he seemed to confuse his Sharks team mates for quite some time before they became accustomed to his style of play. He hides the ball well, has very quick hands, and it is impossible to know exactly what he is going to do with the ball until he actually makes the pass. This is fantastic against defensive opposition, however, when your team mates don’t know what you are going to do, then all that great setup work goes to waste. Once the players around him were used to his style of play, he was a huge asset to the team. I am very concerned that we will see something similar this week since most of the players around Freddie were not around during his last stint with the Sharks.

However, what I can’t get to grips with is why this particular dyke was allowed to spring so many holes requiring the amount of dexterity we are now attempting to prevent a mass drowning.
Yes. Move Pat where he can benefit the team to get us a fighting chance of a win and a place in the play-offs, but for heavens sake FIX THE PROBLEM. Which isn’t at 10 and 15. DUH! 😆

  • I am happy with this team. McLeod has actually showed fast improvement last week (for most of the game) to get the ball out much quicker. I would have loved to have Pat on 12 – but I am sure he might eeven end up there in saome part of the game. However, I also love the fact of him on 15! He likes to attack, and perhaps that is what we need in this game.

I cannot recall, but which position did he play semi CC last years? 10 / 12 /15?

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 49) : Thank you!! I see we come from the same school of thought. I remember debating the role of a number 12 on SW. Some people said a 10’s role is to straighten the line and I argued that it’s the 12’s role. A 13’s role is to create opportunities for the wings to score tries, failing which and depending on how much you want to attack, your 15 will create opportunities for your wings. Nick Mallet always said that if you want to win you need to select the right team. You pick a player that can perform the required role so that his team mates can do what they need to do…team dynamics! Just like playing Botes, Keegan and Kanko. It won’t work because there’s a role or a responsibility that is not going to be done.

I was one of those “keep Pat at 15″…untill he showed what a great FH he is. Regardless this gives me POM JUST because he was very good at 15 and also at 12.

  • There are certainly similarities between playing 10 and 12, and it is a great opportunity for a youngster to play outside an experienced 10 and learn, but you are right, the roles are different. I would agree that the 12 should always be straightening the line, whereas a 10 can be very effective on an angled run. I do think that there is more of a similarity between 10 and 12 than between 12 and 13 though.

  • @Ice (Comment 72) : Pat would excel at almost any position he was asked to play. He is that good an athlete and also has a fantastic attitude for a youngster.

  • Dont you guys think this “reshoveling” of the backline might work in our favour? I mean – the Bulls have no material to study on patterns etc? Just a question, might be silly… 😳

  • @Ice (Comment 77) : At this point, I don’t think it would hurt, so long as the correct players are played in the correct position. I am sure a backline of 10 – Fred, 12 – Pat and 13 – Adi would also be very effective. Of course given that Plum has waited until the last match of the regular season to make changes that are not injury enforced, who knows.

  • @Ice (Comment 77) : Not silly sistah… Judging by the turnaround in our game last week I think the intention is to introduce a little unpredictability into the game plan, which requires a good head on good shoulders to mix it up a bit at the back. Add to that the fact that no-one will be able to anticipate what Fred will do at 10 and it certainly may give us an edge. It certainly confused the hell out of the Snoils. And when it comes to the ability to understand things quickly and adapt to them even more quickly, the Bulls aren’t exactly top of the class!

  • I think Bosman has been finding form the past couple of matches, I just don’t think now is the time to drop him, that should have happened weeks ago. I hate saying this, because I have so much respect for Oom Stef and all he has done for the Sharks, but he really is a worry to me at 13 in SupeRugby. I hope he still has it in the CC, but perhaps he has gone one year too far????? Tough one, but no matter what, I will always respect the man, he has led us to two Currie Cups, and since coming back to the Sharks has been a massive asset to the union.

  • @Ice (Comment 77) : I’m just worried a bid with lambie not closer in your defense might be a bid thin , Mich does not tackle like lambs

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 80) : The problem is even the Sharks don’t know what Fred is going to do next, he confuses everyone around him until they have played with him in several matches. This was very obvious during his last stint with the Sharks.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 83) : And Pat can only be effective if he has the ball. Which he will have much less of at 15.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 84) : This is where I disagree with you. At 10 even with lots of ball and superior talent, an effective defensive game plan can still shut down the flyhalf. There is not much the opposition can do to take a 15 out of the match. My argument is that with less ball he can be more effective at 15 if the opposition effectively shuts down the flyhalf channel.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 85) : And with the poor play the Sharks centres have been exhibiting for most of the season, I can not imagine why any team would not throw everything at the flyhalf channel defensively, being confident that our centres are not going to set the world alight. I am sure the Bulls will be sending all three loosies, the scrumhalf and flyhalf at the Sharks 10 channel, rendering whomever we have there much less effective.

  • We also need to remember that coaches have different views on the game and how it must be played and that’s what differentiates a good coach with trophies in his cabinet and an average coach. What I’m saying is that we won’t always see things the same way and we should just accept each others’ views. Maybe if we had a more attacking 13 we wouldn’t have to move Lambie to 15. Stef is our captain and a good one which means the focus falls on Ludik! Agree, Mcleod is also starting to improve.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 86) : at the same time you have to understand DB that no coach at this stage of the game and with this much importance on the match would just change everything

its actually a huge surprise for the changes he has made

i also called for even more changes, but i also understand the ones he has not made

NOW WE MUST SUPPORT WITH ALL WE HAVE AND GET BEHIND THE TEAM 😉

  • It is great that Rob has given us this forum to express our views and discuss. No matter how warped my views might be. 😉 We can discuss our points of view with evidence to back it up which is great. We can all express our views without being insulting to anyone else. I have been more critical of Plum this season than ever in the past, but I still support him and the boys 100%.

  • It’s sad to say but I’m going to watch this game with ZERO expectations of a Sharks victory. I’ll be supporting them as always and will be shouting FOR them and AT them.

I’ve seen this script before and have been hugely disappointed more times than I care to remember.

I’m not going to do that to myself again but I’ll be over the moon if I’m proved wrong!
