Pat set for fullback switch

The Sharks look set to make changes to their backline to face the Bulls this weekend in order to give it more attacking thrust. With Fred Michalak and Pat Lambie combining well on attack against the Lions in the second half last week, the latter looks set for a positional switch in order to accommodate the former in the starting lineup.

Criticism has been leveled at Louis Ludik in recent weeks for a perceived lack of variation in his attacking game; with wings of the caliber of Lwazi Mvovo and JP Pietersen, it does seem almost criminal that the fullback isn’t linking with them more often on the counter. Then again, that is far less serious a problem than the one that sees the centres unable to provide said wingers with any sort of decent ball in space off the Sharks’ own ball, but I suppose one has to start somewhere. Lambie made his Super Rugby debut at fullback last year and it is the position in which most of his junior rugby was played. He was duly shifted first to inside centre and later to flyhalf during the Currie Cup, though and went to on so excel in the pivot role that he’s held onto it ever since.

The question is, why move him back now to accommodate Michalak? Don’t the Sharks risk undoing all the good work they’ve done by allowing Lambie continuity in the flyhalf jersey, continuity which has allowed him to settle and dictate the course of matches. After all, he was clear man of the match against the Lions at flyhalf…

The answer may, of course be, that sometimes it’s best not to over-think these things, but rather to trust the evidence before your own eyes. Simply put, Lambie at fullback and Michalak at flyhalf worked against the Lions and John Plumtree looks prepared to gamble on it working just as well against the Bulls. I feel he’s missing a trick, though – Adi Jacobs was the other player introduced at the same time as Michalak against the Lions and the guy who provided the real spark in midfield that was needed to get the Sharks playing attractive, try-scoring rugby. Getting Michalak into the starting lineup is the right move, but leaving Jacobs on the bench is, again, the wrong one.

I understand the desire to keep Stefan Terblanche in the starting team for his leadership skills. I think it’s the wrong thing to do, but if it must be done, I would not have him there at the expense of Jacobs. If the decision has been made to rest Ludik, then Terblanche must either drop to the bench (if John Smit starts) or occupy the fullback slot himself, with Lambie operating at inside centre. That combination would allow the South African and the Frenchman to alternate positions on attack (and defence, where Lambie is stronger) to keep the Bulls guessing, while deploying Terblanche’s big boot from fullback, where it is far more useful than at outside centre. The attacking opportunities that could be created for Jacobs and the wings to exploit off own ball must surely be enough to compensate for a lack of attacking oomph from the fullback?

Don’t expect it to happen, though. Word is, the Sharks will employ a 5-2 split on the bench with Jacobs and Ludik the backline reserves. Let’s hope that Michalak manages to weave some of his magic against the Bulls, but if (and when) the Sharks 2011 Super Rugby campaign comes to an disappointingly early end, I feel the ridiculous and stubborn refusal to use Jacobs to his fullest potential will be one of the biggest reasons for that failure.

  • ARGH! I trust the evidence of my eyes, but this is not the right move. It’s desperation tactics.
I have no doubt Pat will excel wherever he is played, and is more than willing to do what it takes. But the problem with the Sharks does not rest with playing him at 10, which I firmly believe is where he belongs. So now he gets moved around to compensate for the shortcomings of others?
Dare I say: here we go again?

  • @Morné (Comment 1) : what’s more important, Morne? A counter-attacking fullback, or an attacking outside centre?

Also, let’s take into account that Pat is certainly not quicker than Ludik…

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Even though I saw this coming last week at the Coke Can, it’s not going to solve the problems long-term. It may give us a fighting chance to get through to the playoffs (which I am not against) but it is not the solution. It’s a sticking plaster on a steadily festering wound.

  • Michalak is not the type of flyhalf you can depend on to win you a game, he is just as likely to lose that game for you.

  • If we start with Smit we don’t need Terblanche’s leadership on the field. Anyway, neither of our captains were on the field last week and we did OK.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 2) : you are right. There’s actually no getting away from that.

The Sharks’ problem is most patently NOT at flyhalf. It is in the midfield. But I think in this case, using Michalak at flyhalf and Pat elsewhere may just be the way to best make use of the resources currently in the squad.

But to my mind, tinkering with flyhalf and fullback when you have a glaring issue in midfield that you stubbornly refuse to address is a “Titanic deckchair shuffling” exercise.

  • I was one of the old supporters of keeping Lambie at 15 and then when he showed how good a flyhalf he was I wanted (still do actually) to keep him there.

HOWEVER!! This IS a good move. I have made no secret that I think purchasing Ludik was a mistake. With Ludik either on the bench or out of the 22 completely we have brought one more great playmaker into the team.

Does this mean that only 2 of Mvovo, JPP and Odwa will be on display? is Odwa still out?

  • @war1 (Comment 6) : I’ll argue we did BETTER with neither captain on the field.

It’s like Smit and Terblanche are working together to enforce Plumtree’s ineffective game plan and once they’re gone, the players feel free to actually play some rugby.

    10 michalak
    11 mvovo
    12 lambie
    13 adi
    14 jp
    15 ludick

Go for broke sharks……throw the kitchen sink at the bulls……most nb …keep ball in hand , do not get into a tactical kicking duel with these okes….

Bulls were not that flash against a poor stormers team ….they can be beaten ….and I believe we will see a sharks victory this weekend.

    My packwould be
    8 kanko
    7 alberts
    6 keegan
    5 hargreaves
    4 mostert
    3 jannie
    2 bissy

  • If Plumtree goes by form he will not make many changes, if any, to the uninspiring team he has chosen all season. It seems he wants to save the game rather than win the game. Once again he relies on desperate last-minute on-field inspiration, invariably when it is too late.

  • This move is not about replacing Ludik at the back, it’s about accomodating Fred. I would accommodate him on the bench, bring him on when he can make more of an impact. Is Adi really the answer at 13? Would we be able to make an impact from the start of a game? We have only seen him start at 12 and it didn’t work that well.

  • Playing
    10 michalak
    12 Bosman
    13 Stefan
    15 Lambie

Is a MUCH better option than
    10 michalak
    12 Lambie
    13 Adi
    15 Stefan

Stefan doesn’t have the speed to counter from there anymore AND you will then be playing Lambie in a THIRD position. Switching between 10 and 15 is not toooooo bad but adding a 3rd position would be.

Playing Stefan at 15 would result in very little change from playing Ludik at 15. Run 10-30m and hoof an up and under.

I can’t agree with this. And not because of my bias. It just does not make sense to start fixing what isn’t broken and leaving what’s broken unfixed.
Yes. I agree, make the best uses of the resources at hand, but do the ends justify the means when we run the risk of going down that oh-so familiar road of stuffing real god-given talent around?
Pat is one of the finest examples of home-grown talent the Sharks have ever had. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool Shark to boot. And even though I know he’ll give everything he’s got to get the winning score on the board, at the end of the day, no matter which way you look at this, it’s just not right.
The problems in the midfield are not new, they have not mysteriously appeared overnight, they’ve been there from the get-go. Now we’re down to the wire and we’re taking the one, solid, stable and ridiculously talented player on the field, who has hauled our collective arses out of the fire more times than I can mention, and move him to make way for someone who’s been back for 5 minutes so that more antiseptic can be smeared on the broken game plan?

  • with Lambie at 12 he can switch with Michalak all the time….depending on field position…..etc..

As a 1 off this would be the best for sharks imo.

Bulls will be helleva emotional with all the last matches, 100 games, etc…..sharks can ambush them by being bold.We have all seen this happen before, seems like yesterday i had to endure a 19 nil washout at Newlands when percy played his 100 th match for boks.

The pressure and expectation that a full Loftus will bring to bear on the Bulls will be immense.

Spies is still not playing well….there backline is sterile….[ basson exempted ] the bulls game plan will not change.

The first 10 minutes will be crucial, Bulls will come out pumped and try a real blitzkrieg. This is where sharks are vulnerable, often giving away early points…..stay in contention in 1 st 20 minutes and watch the Bulls begin doubting.

what a great opportunity for sharks to redeem the entire season!

Stef is, in my opinion, no longer good enough to hold down either position in a Super Rugby team, but if he MUST be there, I feel his shortcomings will be less blatantly obvious at 15 than at 13.

KSA, do you honestly believe that Adi is not a better 13 than Stef? If so, may I ask what the basis is for that belief?

But (Yes I know you shouldn’t start sentences with But. 🙂 ) I’m afraid we just don’t have anyone.

What I am saying is that if he is taken aside and told. “look we need you to cover at 15 for the next match or 2 because you have that ability, but we don’t intend stuffing you around YOU are our flyhalf” then there is ZERO chance of even the tiniest bit od unhappyness from the guy.

  • Playing Fred is the right choice.why not play one of the best attacking flyhalves in the world and let Pat learn a thing or 2 from him at 12.

Fred can lose us the game just as quickly as he can win it,and I can remember the cc at loftus how he sparked the sharks that last 15min.

  • I’ve been thinking about moving Pat to fullback and Fred to flyhalf the entire week. I know Pat is a better flyhalf but we need a fullback that’s going to offer more variety. With Bosman starting to play well it would be criminal not to have an attacking 15. I would also be tempted to start Alberts at lock along with Mostert and play Deysel @ 7 with Keegan and Kanko. Would have Herbst, JS, Coetzee, Hargrieves, JLP, Adi and someone that can cover wing and fullback..ludik I guess.
    1.Beast
    2.Bissie
    3.Eugene
    4.Mostert
    5.Alberts
    6.Keegan
    7.Deysel
    8.Kanko
    9.Mcleod
    10.Freddie
    11.Mvovo
    12.Bosman
    13.Stef
    14.JPP
    15.Lambie

I would have gone for Viljoen or Killian if I was RS. Next best option, send Ludik to Paul Treu to train with the 7’s. Please note that I’m the one that was singing Ludik’s praises last year CC, he has been figured out and needs to add variety to his game, until then, he will at the very best be a 55 – 60 percenter. With these rules and teams looking to score tries your fullback needs to be at least a 70 percenter. Can anyone tell me how many tries has Ludik scored this season? I think it’s 1.

  • With Odwa out my backline would be

    15 Stefan ,
    14 JPP
    13 Adi
    12 LAmbie
    11 Mvovo
    10 Freddy
    09 Mcleod
    Bench Ludick,Bosman

I agree with a 5-2 split but I a not not PLum will have the same 5-2 split I have in mind.
Why Stefan at 15? well we wont win that many lineouts , thats been out weakness all year so far and i feel he is a more steady FB and with neither him or Ludick really hitting the backline , i opt for Stefan as when we need to kick he has a better boot, specially the huge up and unders he used to launch.

So to kick out all the time wont be an option.

This would mean the players have to chase better the recently, I think the nippier backline I selected would be far more attacking and make the Bulls backs tackle more.

We have to keep ball in hand , but at the same time we know you cant just run all the time and from everywhere, thus up and unders will be needed(good ones) and here and there a short kick behind their defensive lines, turn the big fellas around,we cant just have them running at us all day, YOU CAN ONLY DEFEND SO MUCH

To achieve this however i also believe we have to choose our strongest pack possible and try dominate upfront to suck in their big players , WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LET THE BULLS BE MORE AGRO AND BULLY US UP FRONT, ir will be game set and match then

    my forwards would be

    1 JAnnie
    2 Bismark
    3 Beast
    4 MOstert
    5 hargreaves
    6 Deysel
    7 Alberts
    8 Kanko

    Reserve forwards
    Smit,Herbest,Bresler,Coetzee,Daniel

I believe if we are the better team and are leading we are better served for the more defensive players in that last 15-20 min when the bulls will throw everything at us

But before we think of that final 20 we need to win that first 60min and a lightweight pack wont do it.
Daniel has proven against the Bulls when he comes on that final 20 he can creat magic, think back the last few years how he has scored

To start the match will be hard on him and also in the last match he went down 3 times with aches and pains 9 he has been taking a pounding)
Herbst I find is a stronger scrummager then Van staden,

Here is a fact with the bulls”BULLY THEM OR GET BULLIED”

Surely if Province takes Hougaard we can offer Duvenhage, Mcleod is struggling big time, he had his purple patch last year!

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 135) : we can’t get and keep every promising youngster that comes through the KZN school system… especially since Sharks fans seem to expect us to contract the entire SA Schools and Academy team each year as well (not to mention the entire Grey first team, which is usually covered by the first two cases anyway).

  • @robdylan (Comment 137) : add to that wanting to buy every single promising player that even thinks to pull on a rugby jersey anywhere else in South Africa or the world.

I swear, if Sharks fans had their way, we would contract 350 juniors every year, in addition to having a senior squad of over 60 players.

Luckily, using GreatSharkSays’s magical formula above, that will translate to gate takings of R400 million a week. Let’s build a new 250k-seater stadium 🙂

  • A small egg from the backside of the country. I am glad that there is some thinking about the attacking ability/eagerness of Ludik. In all fairness he is only part of the problem. I agree with the midfield as a problem area. However the problem runs deeper. Apparently there is even a captaincy problem (that is who is it going to be 2012 – Daniel or Du Plessis). BUT for me the biggest problem is the person dishing out the contracts and the person working with the arrived contract holders. The old story about the fish, from head to tail.

  • Think this is a mistake shifting Pat to FB. Leave our best player playing were he is excelling at fh. If he has to be moved move him to inside centre. Rather have him up there where the action is.

If Odwa is out for this weekend then rather play Stefan at FB.

  • @robdylan (Comment 138) : Tell me joking!?? You can’t be serious. Don’t even know where to start. R400 million a week. wow!! It’s a fact, the better your team is playing the more fans will come watch, the better your team is playing the greater the chance of hosting semi-finals and finals…money in the bank. Anyway, going back to the debate at hand, I’ll be happy with Lambie at 15 on Saturday and Fred at 10. Bulls seem to have their ducks in a row, they have 2 brilliant wings and in order for your wings to score tries they need a good 15 or 13, hence the move to try bring Sadie on board. Freddie and Lambie played well together last Saturday, Lambie joined the line from 15 and created for his wing..end result, try Mvovo.

  • OK. I’ve been shopping. Had some caffein and carrot cake. And have calmed myself. I’m a firecracker, but one who has learned the hard way that spewing forth before thinking is not always a good idea.
So these days I generally try to override the knee-jerk or gut reaction and count to 30 before aiming squarely for objectivity, and seeing a situation from all angles before making a comment.
I didn’t this morning. The knee and gut got there first. So. Woolworths and Pick n Pay have given me a chance to step back, think, examine, re-examine and postulate further. And before I get my cozzie on, brave the wind and move the lounger to that spot of sunshine with my name on it, I am now going to give an altogether more thoughtful, considered opinion on this subject… 😎
If this move works, and wins us the game on Saturday, no-one will be happier than me. Now. Let’s look a bit further than that. If this move works, it will likely be used again. And I say this in spite of the fact that all evidence points to the contrary because everything that hasn’t worked for the Sharks this season has been repeated ad nauseum, week on week. Square peg, round hole syndrome-style.
So, presuming we get to the play-offs, we can look forward to Michalak as our fh, and SuperPat our fb (again). (Heavens knows what we do with Ludick – the bench, I presume?)
And, I presume (again), Stefan will stay at 13, Bosman at 12, and McLeod at 9. And Adi will stay on the bench to be wheeled out if and when we get into kak.
Is the problem fixed by this?
Do our forwards miraculously discover their inner midfielders? Do our centres suddenly become enlightened afficionados of running, champagne rugby?
No matter which way I do the maths on this one, I keep coming to the same answer – which is a resounding NO.
If this game were a symphony, the Sharks would easily have all the right notes, but also a team of conductors who insist on playing them in the wrong order.
And so I stand by my knee-jerk, gut reaction. Nay. Nay. One thousand times nay.
This is nothing but a Panado approach to rugby, which may well temporarily ease the headache but which won’t cure what’s ultimately causing it.
I hope I end up eating my words (the way Clarkson once had to eat his hair). 😥

Ultimately, the result will be what fate and the Lord intend.
My advice? Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. It’s bound to be a good one.
I stand by my convictions as stated above, but ultimately the result will be what it’s supposed to be.

If the Tahs get 2 points out of their game and Sharks draw, then the Sharks will have had to have had scored 4 tries to get through.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 159) : LOL Well put.

Our problem is at center, changing the personnel around the problem won`t really help would it?

But I`d like to see Fred get a start so I won`t complain. I definately would`ve moved Lambie to 12 though, but that`s what 99% of shark supporters would`ve done . . . Unfortunately Plum falls in the headstrong 1% category.

Just can`t get my head around it. Everyone I talk to agrees with me, why can`t our management see this?

But hey, it`s too little too late now anyway.
Time to prepare for the Currie Cup!

  • @klempie (Comment 163) : In many respects, yes, I am a fatalist. I believe that much of what we do in life and what happens to us is pre-destined. The way we choose to live our lives determines the outcome to a large extent. We cannot fulfil our “destiny” if we are blinkered by the false perceptions that society and civilisation (for want of a better word) force upon us. But the moment we get rid of the blinkers, shed the false perceptions, recognise the divine spark within us and accept the truth – that we are all part of the magical and all-encompassing love that is God – then we can become what God intends us to be and walk the path He has laid before us, which we commonly refer to as “destiny”. 😎
