Glenwood v Westville: preview

Glenwood High School and Westville Boys High School will battle it out in the last big match of the Kwazulu-Natal school’s second term*. The match should provide a fitting ending to what has been a very good and at times unpredictable local schoolboy rugby season.

Should Glenwood win, they will emerge as the undisputed champion team of KZN for yet another season. However if Westville spoil the home team’s party, determining the number one team in the province will probably spark a great debate and in all likelihood come down a matter of opinion with Westville supporters possibly having a slightly strong claim for top honours than those of College, Kearsney and Glenwood.

It has been an unusual season for the Glenwood team in terms of home games. The decision not to play Michaelhouse this year, in addition to no longer having a set fixture against Hilton, meant that the Glenwood team not only had 2 weekends off slap bang in the middle of the season but they have also played in just one low key home game against a very determined George Campbell back in April. Saturday’s match will be viewed as the first major home game of the season by many local residents, so it is bound to be a well attended affair and expecting a crowd of 6000-8000 people won’t be out of the question. This kind of home support is bound to play a major role in the outcome. Westville haven’t been the best travelers. They have lost games on the road again St Andrews and Pionier that they should really have won quite easily.

Glenwood have risen to occasion in big games this year. Last weekend’s away win against College on Reunion Day was further evidence of how well they are able to perform under pressure against a good team. Westville comfortable fits this definition of “good team.” Although Glenwood has always been known for their physicality at and around the tackled ball, it’s been their enterprising back line play that’s caught the eye this season. Good utilisation of the ball, particularly in the second half when opponents’ legs start to tire and the gaps begin to appear, has seen them produce beautiful flowing try scoring rugby at times. This suggests that Westville’s fitness will be put to the test. Covering the lines of Glenwood support runners is of great importance. Fortunately having the need-for-speed loose forward trio of Buthelezi, Ngconco and o’Neill, means there is no local school better equipped than WBHS to counter the threat of dangerous backs and turnover balls in the process.

For Westville, their two best avenues to the tryline remain big centre Tyler Fisher and speedster Keegan Boulle. In Fisher’s case, simple giving him front foot ball has been all it takes to make something happen. However with Glenwood welcoming back big hard hitting centre Dean Moolman this week, the stage is set for possibly the most sought after matchup of the season. This despite Moolman being an inside centre and Fisher playing at no.13.

It hasn’t been a memorable season for most KZN goalkickers. Glenwood kicker Tom has had his fair share of off days but these pale in comparison to the WBHS kicking woes. Since David Watkeys limped off against Michaelhouse back in March, several kickers have been tried and failed, some more miserably than others. The best kicking option appears to be scrumhalf Cameron Wright, however more often than not he plays back up to the in-form Dylan Marcus.

A great day of schoolboy rugby lies ahead. For both schools this is in a sense the quiet before the storm. Based on the number of 2012 returning players involved in tomorrow’s first team game, expect big things from Glenwood and Westville next year.

*Glenwood and College have matches scheduled for the 3rd term.

  • @siorc (Comment 44) : I was looking at KZN in isolation.
In KZN it’s fair to say that there is very little to separate the top 4 teams. Glenwood have lost to Northwood, Westville to Pionier and College, College to Kearsney and Glenwood, Kearsney lost to Glenwood and Westville.
If Glenwood win on Saturday, no one can argue that they aren’t the best team of the interschools games with the borders of the Province.

However from a national point of view, apart from losing to these highly rated KZN teams, Kearsney’s only other defeat has been at the hands of the mighty Grey Bloem.

Glenwood have lost to Monnas, one of the top schools this year but they also lost their first game of the season to mediocre Outeniqua. That is why some ranking systems have Kearsney ahead of Glenwood.

So to date both teams have lost 3 games.

Glenwood’s best win outside KZN is against Paul Roos, Kearsney’s against Dale College.

It’s all relative. You really have to rely a formula based ranking system that measures the strength of the teams beaten and the weakness of the teams lost to.

Unfortunately the ranking system that Richard uses, which happens to be the most popular one in the country, isn’t based on any kind of maths formula at all, so it is perhaps the most subjective ranking system of the lot.

Being a Kearsney Old Boy, I love it that Kearsney have performed so well this season but realistically I know they are not the no.9 team in the country this year.

    Finally:
Glenwood could win on Saturday, go on to have a terrible 3rd term of rugby and end below Kearsney on the national rankings but having beaten Westville, College and Kearsney in 2011, who could then argue that they aren’t the best local team.
Sorry Siorc this is pretty complicated. Hope you understand what I’m getting at.

  • Just a question, doesnt the Hilton vs Michaelhouse game still attract the biggest crowd attendance of any schoolboy derby in KZN? They might not be the the best teams this year, but surely warrant more comment than just “other fixtures”…

  • @Pablo Dinero (Comment 53) : There is no disrespect intended. The aim behind listing these other fixtures wasn’t to diminish their importance but rather to make people aware that there are other fixtures today.
Agreed the Michaelhouse vs Hilton game will draw a big crowd. Adding to the excitement is that these 2 teams are very equally matched in 2011, so predicting a winner is difficult. Personally I’d like to go for Michaelhouse at home but having just seen Hilton in action against DHS, I know that if they secure enough quality ball, which is a likelihood against a smaller than avg MHS pack, their line can carve up a defence. It’s true that both teams have been off the pace this season. Nevertheless there are some good players in both teams. For me, the Hilton fullback Calvin Smith is a star in the making and I know that young MHS’s flyhalf (sometimes fullback) Austin Lockington will be expected to step and take up the KZN no.10 jersey responsibility next season. I also liked what I saw of Hilton’s Jonathan Hugo last Saturday. He’s got some toe. The Hilton back row has a bit of size with de Beer and Train looked fairly big but the MHS l/fwds incl. tough Josh Moon and probably the likes of Fenn and Hartmann are no slouches.
So long story short, no disrespect intended and my predic.: Hilton to upset MHS in Balgowan and reduce the head to head win:loss ratio a bit. It will be a good game and the atmosphere as always will be amazing. I suggest anyone who has the opportunity to attend the game should get there and get there early.
BTW: the guys you do have a right to have a beef with are FNB who for some unexplainable reason have deemed this well-known derby with it’s rich history to no longer be a “Classis Clash”
