The Baby-Boks played Ireland in one of two fifth-place semi-finals at the 2011 IRB Junior World Championships in Italy and came away with a 57 – 15 win, and will now face Fiji in the final 5th place playoff on Sunday.
The Bokkies ran in nine tries to the two by Ireland, with Sevens star Tshotsho Mbovane dotting down three times and Lions winger Wandile Mjekevu getting two. Johan Goosen converted five of the tries with replacement flyhalf Johnny Welthagen adding two points as well.
The Baby Boks dominated the set-pieces thanks to their efficient line-out and scrum. The South Africans leaked two tries, but were superb on defence after outmuscling Ireland. The SA U20s, who conceded a 26-20 defeat against England during the final Pool C match on Saturday, put in a complete all round performance.
Scorers:
South Africa – Tries: Tshotsho Mbovane (3), Wandile Mjekevu (2), Cornell du Preez, Jaco Taute, Francois Venter, Arno Botha; Conversions: Johan Goosen (5), Johnny Welthagen.
Ireland – Tries: Paddy Jackson, Eoin McKeon; Conversion: James McKinney; Penalty: McKinney.

Abit too late this is the backline dawie theron should have picked mbovane should have played ahead of the disappointing and shocking
blue bull courtnall skosan….taute is a damn good outside centre him and francois venter should have been the centre pairing against england…very happy venter had a good world cup he is a try scoring machine at 12 he will probably make it 6 tries against fiji
alot is expected of him but i would like to see him run at 13 in future he is big..illusive..strong but he needs to improve his decision making and he must PASS! the ball
Arno Botha looks like a good talent i can not wait to see him alongside cj stander in the under 21 side they will form a powerfull loose trio..abit worried that stander has regressed abit…he might play currie cup again i do not really rate gerrit jan van vezle….The baby boks missed a real genetal at 9 rademann and lohan jacobs did not inspire confidence…i’m very disappointed by lohan jacobs i thought he would step up but like stander he has regressed after a good under 19 season last year.
Well done baby bokke!!!!!
Wonder if Paul Jordaan managed to get a face full of Bush again!? 🙂
Genetal, bush, where are you guys’ minds toda?. 😆 😀 😈
@Salmonoid (Comment 3) : Far from Rugby it seems. 🙂 😆
@Ben (Comment 2) : 😆
that was embarrasing his whole head went inside the bush after that pathetic attempted tackle
@Ben (Comment 2) : paul “bush master” jordaan 😆
@Ben (Comment 4) : i am very surprised he came out unharmed that could have been a thorn bush
@Megatron (Comment 6) heheheheheheh
@Megatron (Comment 6) : @Muzi (Comment 7) : Do you guys think he will take that bush back to SA with him. He can lay in it every time he wants to then.
@Ben (Comment 9) : gee, when they announcing the sharks team that we can have something productive to chat about 🙂
@Ben (Comment 9) : nah, plenty more bush in Debben 😀
@ Rich… “Johna Goosen” ? 😆
A little to late…Ja Ou Dawie, selection favourite’s costing another year… 👿
@franshark (Comment 10) : what could be more reproductive than “bush”? 🙂
@Megatron (Comment 14) : 😆
I just checked the bulls under 19 side against the leopards it seems the talented paarl gimnasium outside centre christopher bosch is playing full back
@Muzi (Comment 16) : Post the Bulls u19 team.
@Muzi (Comment 16) : Did you see that Henco Greyling did not make Greystaat for C/W. I couldn’t believe it. 😕
@beet: who is henco greyling and do you think the sharks academy should try and contract him?
@beet (Comment 18) : When does CW start. Wish CW was in cw.
@Salmonoid (Comment 20) : Good news! Craven Week is in Craven Week this year. 😛
10-18 July
@<a href="#commentBlue Bulls: Christopher Bosch, Dean Gorrah, William Small-Smith, Andile Jho, Travis Ismael, Tony Jantjies, Jacques Olivier, Cloete Wessels, CJ van der Schyff, Wiaan Liebenberg, Schalk van Heerden, Stefan Willemse, Chris Gouws, Jason Thomas, Du Toit Genis. Replacements: Jaco Visagie, Eckert Thomas, JP Roux, Marzug Maarman, Malherbe van Wyk, Abrie Griessel, Christian Rust, Danie Ludick, Juan Nel, Morné van der Berg
@bergshark (Comment 19) : Hey Bergshark. It wouldn’t be a bad idea. Based on most of our best KZN l/fwds being in gr.11 or less this year, I’d say that the demand for quality l/fwds will be huge for u19s in 2012.
@beet: mbovane hat-trick?that guy has some stepping skills-another talented weepee centre (stepped poor paul jordaan a few times last year in wp vs fs cw final game).
Beet i am not that surprised he has regressed i wonder where will he be heading next year i thought henco greyling wouldmake the step up 🙁
@Muzi (Comment 22) : Interesting. No Nardus 😕 But forgot you guys had Wiaan Liebenberg. Where is Cloete Wessels from?
Apart from Travis Ismael in and Poenie missing, this is pretty much the backline you predicted last year already.
@beet (Comment 23) : I can give you the full list of the contracted players and the schools they come from…
@beet; isn’t cloete wessels from kroonstad?the tbrother of cheetah johan wessels?
@bergshark (Comment 24) : I think he stepped Small-Smith a few times in more than one match. No so sure he did it more than once to Paul tho.
@bergshark (Comment 28) : Interesting but he didn’t go to Grey Bloem that’s for sure.
@beet (Comment 26) :Cloete wessels is that blonde number 8 from griffons he went to the same school as the marais brothers i think..poenie is playing for the under 21 side beet….travis ismael is a tygerberg boytjie he was supposed to be at wp i wonder if he turned down a wp contract ismael is big and strong beeter than craig phieffer.
@beet: could very well be- he had me so confused with the stepping haha
@bergshark (Comment 28) : Yea he is you right
@beet (Comment 29) : Christopher bosch is a better outside centre than willa in my honest opinion.
@Muzi (Comment 31) : Okay Okay I think I rememeber Cloete now. So he’s Johan’s brother. Welkom Gim aren’t doing so badly for talent. They also has Eric Herbert’s son last year and the Sharks’ have profitted from the Marais’ and a utility back Wynand Pienaar
@beet (Comment 35) : Indeed where is pienaar??? i really rate him as the best young under 21 full back
He’s still in the Sharks system as a contracted player. He broke his leg against WP in the last regular season u21 game last season. That slowed his progress in terms of Vodacup chances this year.
@beet (Comment 37) : The talented flyhalf innocent radebe is playing at inside centre for the lions grant khome week…he is still in grade 10
@beet (Comment 37) : Lets hope he can recover..what about that ex hilton wing and sa under 20 representative who badly injured his knee word is he will struggle to run again
@Muzi (Comment 38) :thanks. Good news is that Saints visit Kearsney next year so I’ll more than likely get to see him play. He’s highly rated. Sounds like he’s better than Engelbrecht of KES
@beet (Comment 21) : The other cw – registration plate for Worcester, home of HTS Drosdy and Worcester Gymnasium.
@beet (Comment 40) : The sharks will sign him in my opinion i played flyhalf at school but when you see radebe play one can see a special gifted talent he can kick very well..
@beet (Comment 40) : Do you attend the CW or catch it on TV.
@beet (Comment 40) : Let’s hope the lions with all their millions gloating around do not spoil the party for hans scriba and heyneke meyer in the scouting department kwagga got offered a huge sum of money i mean seriously the lions junior sides are a waste of talent..those structures are a mess…
@Salmonoid (Comment 43) : I do abit of both but this year i can’t i have studies to attended to
@Salmonoid (Comment 41) : I knew it was something like that. Just joking. It’s bad enough that you guys are getting the JWC next year. Is there no end to the greed.lol. Drostdy are having an excellent SBR season btw.
@beet (Comment 37) : bad news, bud… Pienaar’s contract has been terminated.
@Muzi (Comment 39) : Emil Schwartz,
Horrible knee dislocation including major ligament and arterial damage.
Thank God he’s able to walk, but I’m not sure about playing big rugby again.
@Muzi (Comment 44) : but they have Nico S there now to sort it out, don’t they?
@Salmonoid (Comment 43) : Take the week off work and watch on TV. I was seriously considering going to Kimberley for Wildeklawer in April this year tho.CW at the groot gat this year.
@robdylan (Comment 49) : It took meyer like 5 years to fix junior structures at loftus good luck to serfontein
sorry to say except from the daisy there is nothing good about it
The more I look at the bafana top it is actually quite alright but as a kit it is really ugly
http://www.footballkitnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Bafana-Home-and-Away-Kit-Puma-2011-12.jpg
@beet (Comment 46) : Is the JWC in the Cape next year? 😎
@beet (Comment 50) : Will defintaly catch it on TV.
@Salmonoid (Comment 53) : yes in the Boland or the Northern Suburbs depending which school you attended.
@Muzi (Comment 51) : Muzi, any chance you have the Leopards u19 squad. It seems like they like the Bulls will look much stronger on paper than the Sharks u19s.
@beet (Comment 56) : Beet the leopards squad is damn good they are doing a fantastic job at potch i see cape boytjies..the james marx…even james meecham 😯 in that side..they are starting to recruit very well…
Leopards: Wynand Olivier, JC du Plessis, Tiaan Loots, Eugene Petit, Reply Nyati, Lance Ruthford, Jaco Grobler, James Meecham, Marnus Gerber, James Marx, Lood de Jager, Erno Nagy, Bees Strydom, Armand Stoman, Shane Minnie. Replacements: Jandré Conradie, Quinten Nicholson, Waldo Franken, Casper Badenhorst, Leon Meyer, Werner Joubert, Liam Jardine, Kotso Leepile.
@Muzi (Comment 57) : I think we beat this team on paper. Well at least with home ground advantage we do.
@beet (Comment 58) : The bulls always have strong impressive under 19 sides but when its finals time they choke like last year against wp they played kak
@beet (Comment 55) : This is good. do you have any dates, heres hoping for Sept/October.
@robdylan:bummer for wynand pienaar 🙁 what’s his plans now? Any news on cobus de kock?has he been given any sort of contract?
@[email protected]:@robdylan:really sad to hear about emil schwartz 🙁 🙁 he wass an awesome prospect _ can recall breyton paulse mentioning his name a few times last year when they were discussing players at cw.
Anyone know how many grey college players in sa schools squad?
Really disappointed with sa u20 performance-not saying more grey boys in the team couldve changed anything..!
@muzi: does the meisiekind in leopards under19 squad also play at12?
@bergshark (Comment 63) : Bergshark, Craven Week is coming up so the SA Schools hasn’t been picked yet.
Last year there were 6 Greystaters in the SA u18 team: WSS, Paul Jordaan, Johan Goosen, Kevin Luiters, Neethling Fouche and Bitzi + Isbell made the HP u18 squad.
This year Grey Bloem have 13 players in Vrystaat, so the political correctness of calling them Greystaat will continue.
wing Isbell and prop Fouche are back. Also in are Paul Jordaan’s gr.11 brother Pieter and the 2 VIP centres Serfontein and Swanepoel.
KZN has a baptism of death, our first game is vs WP who of late have been the finalists against Greystaat. However this year Muzi’s Bulls, Border and possibly Boland should have quality teams.
@Muzi (Comment 59) : Academy Weeks starts in Jozi on Monday. How wrong is that. These tournaments never come our way.
@beet: thanks. Greystaat 😀
@bergshark (Comment 67) : Sorry I said possibly Boland, meant to say Griqualand West (with Noord-Kaap being so strong)
@beet:remember watching the cw in pmburg back in 2002.was really awesome to see all that rugby in sleepy hollow!and then pmb was also lucky to co-host with dbn the irb under 19 wc in 2005.sadly it has been a loooong time since I can recall tkzn being asked to host any of these junior tournaments.
@bergshark (Comment 69) : Yes those u19 JWCs were great. I remember going and seeing so many future stars like Kieran Read, Pierre Spies and Steven Ferris
@bergshark (Comment 69) : @Muzi (Comment 59) : I read that Cloete and Johan Wessels are the sons of Japie Wessels, the old Vrystaat flank. A few years before Muzi’s time but Bergshark you might just just remember Japie.
I remember in those days the Vrystaat had Wessel Lightfoot and the Wessels cousins Casper and Fransie as well as Japie. Ruan Pienaar’s bald headed father was fullback and the flyhalf de Wet Ras would have made Andy Goode or Piri Weepu look like stick figures. 😛
@bergshark (Comment 69) : @Muzi (Comment 59) :
Minister of misinformation:
Sorry I got my info about Greystaat from this link: http://bit.ly/lGMP4j
but when you do the maths 13+5+1=19 players not 22.
So it turns out that website is wrong and amongst the missing 3 players names is Henco Greyling, one of the best players from CW2010. The other 2 are Francois Pretorius and Gerhard Olivier who was at Craven Week last year as well.
