It’s that time of the year when all sorts of awards and prizes get handed to players who have performed well in the Super Rugby tournament. Here at Sharksworld, we tend to do things a little differently, rewarding those players that performed well, performed poorly as well as rewarding them for those idiotic moments.
Let’s get our series of Sharksworld Awards underway by looking at the performances of the Looseheads in the tournament. We have a few categories that will be applied throughout this series of awards.
Player of the Tournament: The nominees for best loosehead of the season are as follow: 1. Dean Greyling, for his performances towards the end of the season, where he kept the Bulls scrum going forward. 2. Tendai Mtawarira, for his bullocking runs and getting the crowd on their feet, as well as his hard work in the front row for the Sharks. 3. Ben Franks. The stand-out performer from the Crusaders front row, getting under the noses off all the other front row in the competition. 4. Jamie Mackintosh. Lead the Highlanders from the front row with great grunt and was ever present in the loose.
South African Loosehead of the Tournament: The nominees for South African loosehead for the year are: 1. Dean Greyling from the Bulls. 2. Beast Mtawarira from the Sharks. 3. Coenie Oosthuizen from the Cheetahs.
Most promising loosehead of the tournament: There is only really one and that is JC Janse van Rensburg from the Lions. If you can think of any other young loosehead in the tournament that stood out for you, I will gladly put him in as a nominee.
The Epi Taione Worst Purchase award goes to none other than our friends at the Stormers, for bringing CJ van der Linde back from Ireland only to leave him on the bench and play him only when every other loosehead in the province is sick, lame or lazy.
Please make your selections in the comments below, and I will gather the necessary information to report back after all the positions have been discussed. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please mail me [email protected]

The Epi Taione Worst Purchase award π
Epi Taione π π Probably the worst purchase ever. Followed closely by Steve Meyer, Danny Cipriani and AndrΓ© Pretorius.
CJ may end up winning the super 15….and he manhandled the sharks at newlands in the 32…12 …4 trys to nil thrashing….
A bit of respect may be in order.
You would not want me saying the worst loosehead display was Plod against the Saders at Twickers, now would you?
Sadly, the Sharks still believe the Polynesian hype. Nonu was one of the worst performing centres this season and a disruptive influence on his team, yet we salivate over the prospects of getting him… π Another Epi(c) mistake if u ask me.
@Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 2) : Cheetahs actually brought CJ back, Stormers poached him from them.
Coenie Oosthuizen averaging more than 2 penalties a game π
Loosehead of the tournament –> Jamie Macintosh
SA Loosehead –> Dean Greyling
I’m happy with JC getting the best young player award as well CJ getting the Epi.
And a special mention must go to Coenie Oosthuizen (30) for being the most penalized player in the tournament. He gave away 8 more than the next highest penalised player Deon Stegmann (22). That alone should preclude Coenie from the best SA player award. Maybe a “pull your socks up award” will be in order for him.
and CJ prefers tighthead….just by the way.
@grant10 (Comment 3) : You could, but you would be wrong.
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 7) : and yet Dan Retief has him not only in the Boks RWC squad, but even in the best match 22!
I’ll go with Dean Greyling this season. Beast was a bit patchy…
Coenie is younger than JC vJ Rensburg, how does he miss out on the most promising award.
@beet (Comment 12) : Coenie = most promising prospect for any opposition
@grant10 (Comment 8) : oh look – it’s the oke who doesn’t rate John Smit.
@grant10 (Comment 8) : Ah, Grant I thought we had counselled you through this… π
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 7) : That said Coenie also performed the most steals/pilfers in the tournament at 15 with Pockock being in 2nd at 12.
Please don’t confuse Pilfers with Turnovers like the blog of the month did. Turnovers in stats (which Bismarck leads) are bad things as in giving the ball away not as in stealing it.
@robdylan (Comment 14) : seems plum doesent rate him either.
@beet (Comment 12) : I suspect he may be in a list of most promising, but I also think less work needs to be done on JC before he is a GREAT prop, whereas Coenie is a walking penalty.
best comment andrew hore
It’s so refreshing to know john smit will be bok captain and starting against wales
those who do not rate him well deal with it victor matfield aint no bok captain last week at loftus he failed to motivate the bulls and i was not impressed with his decision making all this john smit bashing is a waste of time bring it home smitty.
@grant10 (Comment 17) : Go have look at the team sheet, he is there.
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 18) : I am surprised coenie is from grey college i thought all the grey college props knew how to scrum
….he struggles to hold his bind and he folds every damn scrum π
Best SA-Dean Greyling
Promising-JC Janse van Rensburg
Epi Taione award- CJ vd Linde
@BR (Comment 19) : The Hookers will be done later , lets not skip ahead.
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 24) : As Big Fish would say, that sounds like Bekker quote
@Salmonoid (Comment 21) : yes
i found him
right down the bottom of the list
probably his last game for sharks as well
kinds sad
@grant10 (Comment 26) : thus indicating that Plum has not lost faith in him.
@grant10 (Comment 26) :
Haters gonna hate, I guess.
@Salmonoid (Comment 27) : seems he is good enough to captain a world champion team but cannot find a starting spot in a 6 th placed Superrugby franchise.
so either plum or pdv are incorrect….
I wonder who is?
anyway….enjoy writing off CJ….
and best of luck Sat morning.
@beet (Comment 25) : π
@grant10 (Comment 26) : There’s only really one kinds (sic)sad thing here.
@beet (Comment 12) :
I went with JC purely as Coenie has been around a while..
Its not so much young player but new prospect.. If that makes any sense?
@beet (Comment 25) :
LMAO! π
Your channelling of the spirit is spot on there!
@grant10 (Comment 30) :
Thanks. We both know where we stand on Smit, so let’s leave that be, but honestly, I think you are the only Stormers fan I know who rates CJ. He is your Kees Lensing.
@grant10 (Comment 26) : its not his last game, he’ll be playing next week again
@franshark (Comment 35) : comment of the day π
@franshark (Comment 35) : and then against the stormers π
Grant10 stick to Keo please. You make your name gat there enough, as it is. Thanks.
As unpopular as this may be, my vote is for Coenie, purely because I like him and made a big fuss about him in 2008 when he first played for Vrystaat. I’m holding thumbs that he still comes good for SA rugby’s sake.
I’ve just signed on for this site and hope that it doesnt degenerate into the c#$p on another popular rugby site…I’m here for the rugby
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) : we do our very best not to let it get to that, but ultimately we depend on each and every poster to control their own behaviour here. Has worked fine for 3 years.
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) : I have also recently joined from another “popular” rugby site… you will find it is all rugby talk here – real bliss – but I’ve noticed that every now and again Grant10 and transformation (calls himself Megatron on here) from that “popular” rugby blog come along and try shake up the friendly vibe… π
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) : Look no further! π
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) :
Welcome to the site! I hope you have a pleasant time here, as most of us do..
And ignore guys like Grant10, he will get bored playing with himself..
I haven’t read all the comments above so might be repeating what others have said.
Beast has had an average season by his high standards. No consistency whatsoever. He’s had a couple of good games but the rest have been below the level we are accustomed to.
Jamie MacIntosh has also had a poor season culminating in being left out of the AB’s squad. HH might be able to confirm this. I rate him as a player but this season hasn’t been his best.
@ZuluShark II:good evening and nice to have you on-board π
@beet: must say I agree with you.hope os can sort out his( coenie’s) scrumming.
Coenie Oosthuizen . . . best in SA by a country mile.
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) : ja we don’t even talk cricket, here π maybe a bid of fashion
@Original Pierre (Comment 48) : “Coenie Oosthuizen . . . best in SA by a country mile.” Of what?
Player of Tournie – Wyatt Crockett
SA Loosehead – Coenie Oosthuisen. To be fair most of his penalties were in the first 4 games. His loose play and ruck cleanouts/steals is outstanding.
Most promising loosehead – Dean Greyling
Epi – Rod-zilla for Rebels. Did he actually play?
@Sharks_UK (Comment 51) : Crockett.
very true, didn’t even think of him.
@Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 2) : Dean Hall. The prosecution rests, m’lord.
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) : @siorc (Comment 42) : Hey guys, have you heard, David Beckham wants to tattoo his penis!?….
@Culling Song (Comment 53) : BTW, I realise that this is dredging up the past, but I’m *still* traumatised!
@Culling Song (Comment 55) : He doesn’t exist in my history books. π
@ZuluShark II (Comment 40) : Welcome! You’ll see once in a while we tend to move away from rugby – thanks to the many WP supporters on this site, we do discuss a bit of couture etc. π
And with the many ladies on here, it tend to get a bit fun and not just serious talk – we try our best to keep things “balanced”. π
@all who said dewald duvenhage’s try shouldn’t have been a try(stormers vs cerusaders),read news 24-fleck says bring on the crusaders:in the article it says that refereeing bosses admitted that duvenhage’s try should have been allowed even though kieran read’s one foot was in play ,because the advantage law shouldve applied.
Also mentioned that pollock (kiwi ref-beware sharks!)Didn’t have best of games (sudden “loss of form” when refereeing a sa vs kiwi sr game??or..??)Especially upset at not blowing saders for continued infringements in last 3 rolling mauls(yellow card?)And I can recall bekker being upset at one stage with touch judge after stormers line-out was lost astray,complaining about what mustve been interference by saders.so the stormers shouldve beaten the saders .
Player of the Tournament: Ben Franks
South African Loosehead of the Tournament: Dean Greyling
Most promising loosehead of the tournament: Coenie Oosthuizen
@Ice (Comment 57) : but we appreciate all different opinions expressed in a polite manner – I am very fond of grant’s turbo reverse π³ – thought it very funny π
