Ricky Januarie has retired from international rugby with immediate effect.
According to an SA Rugby press release, the Stormers scrumhalf has decided to step down after a discussion with Bok coach Peter de Villiers. The pair apparently discussed the likelihood of Januarie’s inclusion in the South African World Cup squad and based on the outcome of that talk, Januarie has opted to call it a day and rather concentrate on his new career with Lyon in France.
Unable to nail down a regular starting spot for the Stormers this year ahead of Dewald Duvanage, Januarie has also been released from his Western Province contract and will join up with Lyon ahead of the new European season.
Good luck, Ricky and au revoir. Thanks for the happy Bok memories, most notably that try in Dunedin a few years back.

Well done Ricki
π
This Friday has just taken a turn for the better! π
Jokes aside – I’ll never forget that chip/chase try he scored against New Zealand. He was a real pit-bull in his day. Good luck to you Mr. Januarie!
@Charlie (Comment 2) : Its the right move man
@vanmartin (Comment 3) : Yeah, people tend to just remember that chip chase but he was a damned good scrummy back in the day, just got lazy.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 4) : πΏ
@vanmartin (Comment 3) : Ask Dan carter about the day that every ball he got had Ricki attached to it, was fun to watch Dan crumble like that.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 5) : Seems like he is 36 years old… π
i was at newlands in 2005 when ricky terrorised Dan Carter….
Go well Ricky….its the right call.
Good luck Ricky
Good luck Ricky and thanks for all the good memories.
The miracles have started!!!! Believe!!! The Crusaders are going down!!!
Thanks for all the good memories Rickster!! π
Besides ‘that try’ he had quite a few good games for the Boks!!
I think most WP/Stormers supporters will be happy about this! π
Yeah he may have been a bit tubby and slow lately but that try will make a legend forever.
π @ Clayton #7
absolute terrier, man… I loved an on-form Ricky. He just seemed to throw his entire heart and soul into everything he did.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 5) : I always enjoyed his never-say-die attitude (when he was still in form) but that there are worse ways to be remembered! I suppose a lot of people will remember Stransky for that one drop-goal too π
@vanmartin (Comment 3) : A pittbull to the very end I tell you.
He may have gained a bit of weight or lost a bit of form but nobody can ever accuse him of not playing with the heart his position requires.
Cheers dude!!!
@Charlie (Comment 8) : π There’s that drum again, even on a WP thread. π
@KSA Shark Β© (Comment 20) : π
π
Nothing about this on the Supersport or Shady Pines websites yet. Rugby365 has the article up but after Sharksworld. Not bad Rob!
@vanmartin (Comment 22) : π
Go Well Ricky!!! π
@robdylan (Comment 16) : Spot on Rob, exactly my thoughts. As much as so many of us used to tease about his penchant for pies, he always gave his all when playing for the Boks. All the best Ricki and thank you for all you did for your country.
Go well Ricky.
@vanmartin (Comment 22) : right place, right time, just for once π
@Dancing Bear (Comment 25) : my sole issue with Fourie du Preez has always been a perceived lack of personality. I’ve never been one for the robots.
Not criticising his play, of course – he is the best scrumhalf in the world by a country mile – but I prefer my heroes a little more flawed!
@robdylan (Comment 28) : I understand what you say, but not sure I would want anyone else at 9 than FdP. Ricki has the flaws for sure, but he brings a whole lot of personality to the match as well. Robots win RWCs though don’t you think?
When he was at the top of his game he was a great player. He had some memorable games in the Lions jersey. Who can ever forget his solo effort winning try for the Boks in NZ.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 29) : they do π
Thanks Ricky & good luck at Lyon. π
In Ricky’s case the ‘maerjare’ were the best.
@McLovin (Comment 33) :
hehehehehe…….comment of the week! π π
@McLovin (Comment 32) : Seems Ricky prefers Lyon’s more then a Breeze…. π π π
Go well Dawg. Just don’t eat all the pies and burgers, leave some for the Lyonians as well π
How WP wished they had a guy called Conrad Hoffman in their ranks… π
Well done ricky, as frik will be remembered for his famous test, you will be remebered for yout try against the AB`s at the house of pain. Good call my man.
Now will Bolla Conradie return to WP? π π
@McLovin (Comment 33) : @Pokkel (Comment 34) : GIVE THAT MAN A BELL’S π π π
@McLovin (Comment 33) : Bwhahahahahahahahahaha ROTFLMAO.
I hope Ricky does well in France!!
@VanWilder (Comment 37) :
Bolla Conradie’s Boland team beat WP in a friendly yesterday afternoon!! π β
Ricky – thanks for the memories and enjoy France! It’s a great place if you dont speak English!
Thanks for the mammories.
Speed mammories? π³
I just got a reminder why I don’t visit Voldy anymore.
Their post on January has brought out the scum of the earth again. π
@Sharksmad β The Blogβs Dudette (Comment 44) : Moobs, darling.. moobs π
Rob π
@Sharksmad β The Blogβs Dudette (Comment 47) :

Today 16 years ago the Boks won the 1995 RWC!!!
I remember that day so well!
Fond memories!
@Pokkel (Comment 45) :
I can so identify with what you’re saying.
Thats why I dont visit that often!! π
@Pokkel (Comment 49) : I remember the day, the evening is a bit fuzzy……..
I think we ended up at father’s moustache watching GLAM. π π³
So they gave Ricky two straws and he picked the longest one. Good for him and lots off luck to him for the future.
Not good news for me I`m afraid.
What am I gonna chirp my so called stormer friends now? πΏ
Hmmmm. SA Rugby lost their King Pie sponsorship? π
@Butchie34(comment12): not quite π
@Original Pierre:comment 53 π
