Sharks to announce surprise signing

According to a teaser displayed on the official Sharks website, the Durban union are poised to announce a new signing imminently.

Our information is that the new player (we assume it’s a player) will be announced at a media conference on Friday, although the identity of this player is currently an incredibly closely-guarded secret.

The inevitable speculation will be that Ma’a Nonu is the player in question, based on the fact that he had a discussion about his future with John Plumtree in New Zealand just last week. The amount of fanfare that seems to be accompanying this announcement would suggest that if not Nonu, it would be a player of similar stature.

Plumtree, however, downplayed the chances of the Kiwi centre moving to Durban in the near term, stating the latter’s ongoing Kiwi ambitions and young family as major obstacles to a move at this stage. The Sharks will be short of a specialist loosehead in the upcoming Currie Cup campaign, raising the possibility that Nonu is a red herring an that it might be a number 1 who’s being announced on Friday, possibly a big-name one from the Northern Hemisphere.

I guess we’ll just have to wait until Friday to see who it’s going to be.

  • For me i feel it has to be a world class 12. But, it could also be a lock and as Rob said a 1; but my money is on a Centre…i Hope it is.

Maybe Brendan Venter as backline Coach?

Will they give the player a jersey with his name on it to hold up? Even though our jerseys don’t have names?

  • I pray that it’s a proper attacking centre that can defend as well.
    Hope it is Frans Steyn.

My gut is telling me that it’s a lock or a tighthead.

Jeez, imagine the anti-climax if it turns out to be Marius Joubert that they’re unveiling πŸ™‚

  • @robdylan (Comment 29) : Maybe ur right; but i still think we need a World Class 12 in our setup. We Don’t need another Lock right now; unless Mossie leaves; but as you have stated previously it is looking quite unlikely…Good For The Sharks and also good for Mossie to Stay in The Black and White. If he keeps playing the way he is, he could Def. become the frontrunner for the number 4 Bok Shirt after The World Cup…as u said, Rob.

Chances of a Big Joe or Shaun Sowerby move are slim. If its Danny Cipriani or Gavin Henson im gonna start supporting the Kings!

Let’s hope Barrit returns and we can sign Frans Steyn as a fullback, now isn’t that wishful thinking?

I know it’s going to be Joubert, everything points to him. Watch how devastated we will be Friday.

It should be a backline player ,I hope it is either frans or ruan but this is unlikely, as some one said early it will probably be a retired over looked player, sigh.

  • The true true danger in the crusaders backline ;Maitland and Zack Guilford . Maitland; what a winger! Doesnt seem to fast or strong but he gets away from and around players ,nimble as they come and plays a thinking game!

Carter and SBW lives are made easier buy these guys -wonder what a better distributing center like jean de villier or a barnes/gitteau would do with them?! SBW is a great player but I think his distributing game needs work -otherwise he would be perfect!

  • @sharonvanwyk: at 12 _ defence is strong.strong ball carrier.work on his off load in the tackle-reckon he can be even better than sbw here.not to shabby step of his right foot.and then there is the boot(okay he could use this even more at 15 and he is solid and courageous under the high ball-but he is courageous point.).would give us a dk option -michalak showed in crucial bulls game how important a dg is .lambie doesn’t try the dg option_which is a moajor reason I still rate morne steyn at 10 .butchie also understands the value of the dg.)

Well I can remember fransie steyn do one like that in nz in a superrugby game (thinks it was vs chiefs in 2009),for jpp to score .and that was quick, under more pressure .perfectly weighted kick.frans steyn is the real deal.

Anoooooooother signing that showcases all that is wrong with the Sharks’ recruitment of late.

Buy young, talented, hungry, upcoming stars rather than old has beens. Better yet, develop them yourself. But if you have to buy, buy shrewd but don’t be thrifty and dumb about it.

  • @bergshark (Comment 180) : I’m sure we could have found the money to keep Pienaar if we really wanted to.

  • No, just talking #*#. Don’t have a clue, lots of speculation. Steyn wants to come back to RSA…but can’t see racing cutting him short…SBW is looking for a new home, brussow is not happy with Naka…Nanu most likely signing…my money on nanu joining sharks…but Sadie is my number one pick…with robert and sias playing well the sharks may sign them both now!
