According to a teaser displayed on the official Sharks website, the Durban union are poised to announce a new signing imminently.
Our information is that the new player (we assume it’s a player) will be announced at a media conference on Friday, although the identity of this player is currently an incredibly closely-guarded secret.
The inevitable speculation will be that Ma’a Nonu is the player in question, based on the fact that he had a discussion about his future with John Plumtree in New Zealand just last week. The amount of fanfare that seems to be accompanying this announcement would suggest that if not Nonu, it would be a player of similar stature.
Plumtree, however, downplayed the chances of the Kiwi centre moving to Durban in the near term, stating the latter’s ongoing Kiwi ambitions and young family as major obstacles to a move at this stage. The Sharks will be short of a specialist loosehead in the upcoming Currie Cup campaign, raising the possibility that Nonu is a red herring an that it might be a number 1 who’s being announced on Friday, possibly a big-name one from the Northern Hemisphere.
I guess we’ll just have to wait until Friday to see who it’s going to be.
