Sharkie!
The Sharks today announced that the new “signing” that has been getting tongues wagging every since it was hinted at on the official website earlier this week is none other than a rebranded version of their mascot.
The announcement left the assembled journalists a little bemused and the fans somewhat disappointed – they had, I fear, been expecting something more.

I have to admit I’m more than disappointed I’m fuming.
Let’s be honest, if it had been the Bulls or one of the other teams pulling this nonsense, we would all be killing ourselves laughing. Now we have to hang our heads in shame over this shame.
It’s well made, and I’m sure the kids will love it and all – but didn’t they realise this sort of marketing gimmick would upset the people who are actually there for the rugby?
It seems like the Sharks have signed Lenny from Shark Tale.

Look, after a season of disappointment for the Sharks already I don’t think this was the right thing to do. The Sharks’ display in the S15 confirmed that they are heavily deficient in certain “playing” positions. The squad really needs to be bolstered if we are serious of challenging for a trophy in the future.
Fans want to see some REAL signings, not this silly clown stuff.

Look I am no marketing guru, but I would think that when you launch something new, or make an announcement, part of that will be to create awareness and excitment, but more importantly, that the announcement itself lives up to the hype.
Now they got part one right perfectly, the problem here is that the hype at the actual unveiling of what would have been super excited people in attendance, would have dropped quicker than a lead filled balloon…
I am sure (again I am no guru) that the actual event, and how that is presented to the public should exceed the build up, which failing to do, puts the joke on the PR people of the union rather than the public and press (because this was surely meant as a joke).

But those stadiums aren’t big at all. I expected Madison Square Gardens to hold about as much if not more than our rugby stadiums but it only holds about 18,000 and it’s one of the bigger stadiums.

Way back in 2003, I went to watch Bulls vs Stormers with a mate. I wore a blue shirt but didn’t scream for the Bulls being a Sharks fan (but that meant I didn’t scream for the Stormers either), the oom behind me wanted to hit me with his steel cup because he blamed the 75-14 loss on my not screaming for the Bulls 😆

Fans of The Sharks, will be in for a pleasant surprise when the much-loved mascot Sharkie goes 3-D at the Mr Price KINGS PARK on 16 July 2011.
Sharkie, the animated version of the “running man icon” that forms part of The Sharks’ logo device, is The Sharks official mascot and has undergone a three dimensional transformation.
“It was time to modernise our mascot,” explains Mike Ablett, Marketing Manager of The Sharks, “so in partnership with Sunrise Productions, the producers of the award winning Jungle Beat TV series, we have brought him to life with a 21st century superhero look and feel.”
The modern superhero Sharkie goes “live” today (July 1), as a character that interacts with fans, and in a filmed animation, which will be shown on the big screen at all Sharks’ games at the Mr Price KINGS PARK. He will also be appearing before all 3D movies shown at Nu Metro cinemas in Durban.
“One of the most important benefits of Sharkie to The Sharks is that he is the ideal tool to promote The Sharks and the game to young people and to grow the amazing talent that we have in this country,” says Ablett. “Sharkie appeals to all our fans and is the team’s biggest supporter livening up the crowds on matchday. Children simply love him.”
“Sharkie is always positive about life and rugby and he is a true brand ambassador, promoting a healthy way of life and playing rugby in a safe and fair manner. He has a big heart and brings with him all the power and passion of The Sharks’ brand. So from a marketing point of view, it made sense to utilize his personality in further enhancing our brand.”
As the iconic Sharkie bursts into 3-D life, he brings with him a host of branded apparel and merchandise, the largest portion of which is a children’s clothing range aimed at one to thirteen year olds.
The clothing range will be available immediately through The Shark Cage, The Sharks’ merchandise store in Durban, and will be rolled out into various national retailers over the next year.
“We have not stopped at the apparel range, Sharkie merchandise is in production, and over the next six months, fans will see a host of other really fun Sharkie-inspired goods go on sale from plush toys, bed linen-, kids party-, Christmas- and back-to-school ranges to watches, rugby balls and clocks amongst many other items.” says Ablett.

If it is, why don’t they just say so? Right now many people could still be thinking (and hoping) that there is actually going to be an announcement regarding a player joining the Sharks.

The union never said it was a player everyone just jumped to their own conclusions.

im disappointed. was a fan of the previous mascot and its ‘streamline’ (not bulky) nature. going to have to see it in person to make a fair assessment. the former was agile, sliding around, and able to maneuver himself pretty well.
