If the Crusaders win – I’m writing a book!

I have decided to write a book – but not just yet!

This Crusaders outfit just keep defying the odds. They have blown the home ground advantage myth out of the water. They have continually dispelled the travel factor and they still manage to rotate their playing stocks and obviously they keep winning. Personally I think they will come unstuck tonight at Newlands or will they – surely they can’t win again, not after that flight, not at a sold out Newlands – surely. One thing is for sure if they win tonight, they will have no trouble flying back to Australia or New Zealand and pulverising the Reds or Blues in the Final. The Stormers for me are by far the tougher opponent of the three.

The Stormers may just be caught thinking about past encounters tonight as they reflect about what happen last time the two teams met at Newlands. That match was a classic tussle, with a depleted Crusaders side prevailing 14-20. This time round the Stormers are sure to recognise that there will be some additional faces in the visitor’s ranks in the forms of Richard McCaw, Daniel Carter, Bradley Thorn, Samuel Whitelock and Sean Maitland, influential strike players to say the least.

A Crusaders win tonight against the odds will lead to a convincing win in the final next week, which has got me thinking – ‘There’s a book in this!’. It could be a book that details more than just the earthquake or the success of the city’s rugby team but of the people of Christchurch set against a city in ruins.

All good sports books/films are made only if the team wins and at this stage the Crusaders are some way off that, but there are some good stories lines there.

I’m thinking of writing it through the eyes of the 7 year old boy that lives over the back fence of Daniel Carters property, he has to bike across the city to his granddads to watch the games because his place has no power (he is a fictitious character, but it is an idea in progress at this stage). I bet though there are a few 7 year olds up tonight to watch the match from South Africa, it reminds me of when I was a 7 year old getting up to experience my first memories of watching the All Blacks in South Africa in 1976 – special memories that don’t come around often in ones rugby watching life.

I will have to run it past my editor – what do you think?

  • brilliant idea! It is 5 50 am here in CT….Restless night, got grandstand tickets and nerves really kicking in ….been a tough week worrying about injuries to key stormer players, still no finality on Duvenhage as yet either. Saders are a very special team and although I will be screaming and praying their journey ends tonight, the respect i have fot the efforts in face of the adversity will never diminish.

  • Dude I hopw you don’t get to write a book, but the Stormers don’t exactly have the best record when it comes to making a success of a play-off when there is controversial issues during the build up.

Way back the Highlanders THUMPED them after they were threatening to strike lead by Andy Marinos before the semi-final. And this week hasn’t been to quiet for them either.

    Go Stormers
    Go home Brits

  • @HH: just remember to make special mention of the refs … 😉 🙁
Refereeing bosses were in agreement that duvenhage’s disallowed intercept try shouldve stood (something about advantage ).and not to revisit last week-end’s play-off game.
think the saders are happy not to be travelling to loftus as in years of past.
    Go stormers!!!!go south africa !!!
Hope schalk britz scores that injury-time winning intercept try 😉

  • @Ben: it is a shame for corrie sanders that after the retirement of lennox lewis, lewis’ coach, emanuel steward, decided to join the klitschko camp.wouldve been great if he couldve had someone like steward coach him.was talk that stewart might coach sanders ,but he opted to join the ukrainian brothers.guess steward was thinking long term-two boxers instead of one,and they are still boxing(longevity).
