Burger injury concern for Boks

Stormers flanker Schalk Burger has been ruled out of all rugby for two months after dislocating his thumb in the first half of Saturday’s Super Rugby semi-final loss to the Crusaders. The first-choice Springbok open-sider underwent an operation on Saunday morning to repair the damage.

According to Stormers coach Alister Coetzee, though, the fiery Burger is in no danger of missing the Rugby World Cup, although he now looks very unlikely to play any role in the upcoming Tri-Nations series. Nobody is yet sure exactly how coach Peter de Villiers intends to approach selection for the upcoming tour to Australia and New Zealand, but whispers continue to circulate regarding the “management”, or resting, of a number of the Bok World Cup certainties.

A large squad of 49 players assembles in Cape Town this week and with Heinrich Brussow and Deon Stegmann providing adequate cover in the number 6 jersey, it is unlikely that any further player will be called up to replace Burger. This injury and the subsequent lack of any game time over the next few months, though, does mean that the Boks will in all likeliness begin their World Cup defence with a pair of flanker (in Burger and Juan Smith) who will surely be low on match fitness.

Smith hasn’t played since injuring his heel in the second round of the Super Rugby competition, back in February.

  • There are IMHO better flankers who warrant a shot at bok colours. πŸ˜›

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 1) : @Caratacus (Comment 2) : Yeah, many, many, many better flankers. Like my little sister. My deceased grandmother. The shadowy figure that trails me everywhere I go in the spirit realm, and who may or may not be a figment of my imagination… If I was a Bok selector I would take out a restraining order prohibiting Deon Stegmann from coming within 5km’s of a Bok jersey.

  • @Culling song (comment 3) and Clayton (comment4) I see you are both sycophants of Mr. Burger. I understand the mentality, what I dont understand is the attitude towards others who disagree. On Saturday Mr. Burger did some excellent impressions of Wahl Bartmann, run 3 metres and fall on the deck or simply run straight into the opposition. One of the differences between the Stormers and the Crusaders on Saturday was the Crusaders ran around the Stormers. The Stormers ran into the Crusaders. (Amongst numerous other things) πŸ™„

  • I find it ironic that a not 2 years ago most people were disgusted at the exclusion of Stegman from the Bok squad (maybe not on Sharksworld but definately on KEO) and now most people don’t want to see him near a Bok jersey. Guess the coaches were right NOT to pick him in the first place…

I’m not above admitting that my personal dislike of him as a person may cloud my judgement if him as a player. Hence the qualifier “if *I* was a Bok selector…”

  • @Culling Song (Comment 20) : I have nothing wrong with anti-Stegmann arguements, I am quite anti-Stegmann myself. I was referring to all the fans and media who put in a huge punt for his Bok inclusion a while back and are now ‘vomiting’ on him. If that wasn’t you don’t worry. If it was… don’t worry either I was just pionting out the irony.

  • @robdylan (Comment 42) : In place of Deon ‘Penalty Machine’ Stegmann? I really do. Keegan plays with the same kind of drive and heart that Schalk does and steps up to the occasion as we all know. To me he is the most obvious replacement and he was on in the larger squad anyway.

  • In the spirit of only talking about a players performance on the field; πŸ˜‰ anyone who has not figured out that Stegmann, at the international level is invisible to everyone watching the match except the referee, should pay a professional visit to Mark Lawrence. He proved this quite dramatically on the end of year tour last year. I remember seeing him during the anthems, then I am positive the only time I saw him again for the entire match was when he was sheepishly retreating 10 metres after being admonished by the referee. 😈
