Former Sharks age-group flyhalf Wes “Horse” Dunlop takes another step closer to the Bulls Currie Cup side as he is named on the bench in Pine Pienaar’s team to play the Griffons in a pre-season friendly this weekend.

Dunlop, a product of Grey High in PE who played for the Sharks at under 21 and Vodacom Cup level was instrumental in College Rovers’ first ever National Club Championships title last year and was quickly recruited by Heyneke Meyer to join Tukkies for the Varsity Cup this year and was pulled into the Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup squad as backup to Francois Brummer towards the end of the season. Brummer looks set to play a starting role at flyhalf for the Bulls in Currie Cup this year, but don’t be too surprised to see Horse given a few runs in that iconic light blue number 10 jersey as well.

Pienaar has installed Derick Kuün as his captain for this one and has also brought former Lions and Clermont hooker Willie Wepener straight into the starting lineup, ahead of local boy Henry Bantjes. The side is still missing a fair few big names, but is probably a lot closer to the likely starting lineup for next weekend’s Currie Cup opener than the experimental outfit that went down to the Leopards a week ago.

Blue Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Stephan Dippenaar, 12 Stefan Watermeyer, 11 Sampie Mastriet, 10 Francois Brummer, 9 Dustin Jinka, 8 Gerrit-Jan van Velze, 7 CJ Stander, 6 Derick Kuun (capt), 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Fudge Mabeta, 3 Rossouw de Klerk, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 Corné Fourie. Replacements: 16 Henry Bantjes, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Warwick Tecklenberg, 19 Okkie Kruger, 20 Lohan Jacobs, 21 Wesley Dunlop, 22 Francois Venter.

  • I hope Pine Pienaar drops Jaco Oupa Pretorius for good we need the watermeyer and dippies partnership to grow and step up.

Francois Brummer will be given time to settle down sitting on the bench for the past two seasons behind JLP and Steyn has killed his confidence like they all say he has regressed he needs to play his own game…’s a very crucial currie cup season for brummer i hope he can find his form dunlop and boshoff are breething down his neck.

This is a good backline that ex paarl boytjie Jurgen Visser turned his back on WP rugby…he wants to play for the bulls now he is very talented i rate him very highly i atched the lad in the 2007 craven week when he was jolling with sadie and koster.

Sampie Mastriet is a good talent at wing he is not lazy like van den heever he looks for work!
Francois venter and Lohan Jacobs are getting abit of exposure they will go back to the Under 21 side next week.

Glad that strong prop Juan Schoeman is making the step up he was a machine for dawie theron in the scrums a very good prop.
Rossouw de klerk will be a huge asset for bulls rugby he can scrum and he is all over the park.

Fudge and Jinka still have to convince me that they are good enough so far i am not impressed with those two.

  • @Muzi (Comment 7) : Thanks Muzi. It looks like 2 walkover wins for our Sharks juniors next weekend. Absolutely no quality in either of those Bulls junior sides.

Jokes. But Willa at 12 will be interesting. Also keen to see how Malherbe van Wyk goes.
