Bulls sign WP pair

The Blue Bulls have announced via Facebook the signing of JJ Engelbrecht and Johan Sadie from Western Province.

The news originally broke on twitter viaΒ  Brenden Nel and was later confirmed by the Blue Bulls twitter and facebook account.

Johan Sadie became hot property this year after a dazzling performance for the Stormers on their overseas tour, as it turns out the Bulls have been after his signature since his schoolboy days but the player being a huge WP/Stormers fan chose to stick around and first earn his stripes so to speak.

JJ Engelbrecht, an immensely talented player and prolific try scorer has also spent many a season at WP and has probably signed for the Bulls feeling very frustrated at the lack of opportunity he has been afforded at the union, he will no doubt be a very popular name if given more game time up North.

These signings are only effective from the 1st November and both players will therefore be available to WP for the Currie Cup

And at the moment he’s 4th choice centre at Province.

Good luck to the both of them.

  • @Muzi (Comment 13) : Not really. Can’t keep ’em all.

The money and potential game time at the Bulls is simple too good to refuse imo.

Even if WP matched the money, what are his chances of a regular starting spot in Super rugby at WP?

Barring seriously injury, JdV, Fourie & de Jongh will be the first choice for the foreseeable future.

So he might as well go to the Bulls for 2 seasons, make some money & get plenty of exposure at super rugby level.

Then return in 2014 with some valuable experience. 😈

JJ is actually an 13,he played there untill he went to wp and made him a wing!!!! Great move buddy!!!!!! Now his rugby will get back on track!!!

  • These moves are the price you pay for success.

WP have had an outstanding run at junior level. This has resulted in overstocks most noticeably in the wider positions. Something had to give.

Personally I think no matter where JJ goes to in SA, he’s going to have a tough time holding down a starting position as a left wing. This opinion has little to do with his ability. He is a good prospect. Maybe he needs to focus on being a centre again.

We have a fantastic KZN Craven Week centre who has done some killer work at 13 this season and earlier this week a very experienced coach told me this boy needs to move to wing to further his career.

I don’t think JJ has the same work ethic as Danie Poolman either (on the field of play)

But he was definitely forced wide by better quality players being available to cover midfield in the juniors and he missed out on early season caps during SR because Poolman was the better player.

When JJ did earn those CC caps last year, Poolman a right wing who is a pretty good centre and happened to be the leading try scorer in u21 was overlooked.

  • Anyone else have the sense that the Sharks’ “buying power” these days is not what it used to be in the late 90s/early 2000s? There was a time when the Sharks could pick and choose who they wanted with ease, and get them to sign without much effort.

Not so sure that’s the case these days… or is it just me?

  • @siorc (Comment 88) : Well, it’s simple, Meyer vs Rudolph..no contest. Peter Roussow vs Bash or whoever that’s at the Sharks..no contest, Rassie vs Rudolph..no contest, Fleck vs whoever our backline coach is..no contest. Which union would you sign for if you were a promising backline player? I’m not expecting any trophies from us for a while. Lean years ahead unless we sort our leadership which is directionaless imo. No vision at all.
