Young Sharks overcome game Eagles

The Sharks XV overcame a spirited display from their hosts to emerge 35-22 victors against the SWD Eagles in George last night. The visitors scored five tries to the Eagle’s three.

On a cool and moist night, the young Sharks backline struggled to find their rhythm early on and failed to capitalise on the solid platform provided by their pack. The wet weather made handling difficult and a few lapses in concentration let the Eagles in for two scores in the half – despite scoring two tries of their own in this period, the Sharks XV trailed by 14 points to 15 at half time.

The second half went much better, though, with the Sharks scoring three further tries to a late consolation score from the hosts. Jacques-Louis Potgieter converted all five of the tries, two of which were scored by fullback Gouws Prinlsoo, arguably the pick of the backs on the night. Loosehead prop Dale Chadwick looks set to have secured a Currie Cup berth with a strong display that saw him score twice as well, with the fifth touchdown going the way of Baby Bok flanker Franna Kleinhans.

The Sharks management and coaches who went along will have been pleased about the way this young team dug deep and managed to turn things around in the second half and will now have a far better idea as to which of these players are ready to take the step up to the Currie Cup team. Coach John Plumtree will include a number of the players from last night’s team in his outfit to face the Blue Bulls at Kings Park next weekend.

  • Well done Sharks. The history of rugby suggests that if ur pack sets a good platform, you’re in a good place.

Our biggest challenge ahead of next year’s SR is putting in place a winning backline formula and improving our depth chart.

  • I’m not reading anything on Adonga and that worries me. Would hate a situation where another union that is massive when it comes to skills development (Stormers, Cheetahs) would see his potential and develop him into a weapon of mass destruction. Any info on this guy? If I was RS I would send this boy to Paul True for a few months on the Sharks’ account, so that he can be in an environment where there’s a lot of attention paid to skills.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 5) : If I were Rudolf Streauli, I’d resign or ask the union to fire me. The guy can’t spot a roll of staaldraat wrapped around his head, let alone a talented player IN Natal.

Seems he is far sighted, can spot talent from miles away but can’t see f…all under his nose.
