Sharks selection becoming clearer

Sharks coach John Plumtree will have learned a fair bit from the Sharks XV’s win over SWD on Friday night and should have a clearer picture regarding selection for Saturday’s Currie Cup opener against the Bulls.

The forwards, to all intents and purposes, stood up well and with only three players from the Super Rugby squad (Keegan Daniel, Jacques Botes and Eugene van Staden) still to come into the selection frame, the pack probably won’t change all that much. We know that Craig Burden will start at hooker, with Anton Bresler and Ross Skeate forming the lock combination. Marcell Coetzee also looks a certainty to be the third member of the loose trio and will probably be at blindside flank, the position he played against SWD.

The props remain an area of some speculation. Dale Chadwick played very well against SWD, scoring two tries and showing great ball skills in the process. Plumtree may well opt to go the more conservative route, though and hand Eugene van Staden the number 1 jersey with Wiehahn Herbst at 3 and Chadwick on the bench. Herbst, according to reports, had yet another dominant outing on Friday night.

Things are less cut and dried at the back, though and I maintain that the most likely scenario this weekend will see Fred Michalak operating at scrumhalf alongside Jacques-Louis Potgieter in the flyhalf jersey. I would expect Stefan Terblanche to captain the team from outside center, with Marius Joubert introduced off the bench this week. That leaves Louis Ludik at fullback with Sbura Sithole and Mark Richards both likely to make Currie Cup debuts on the wing.

Regarding the bench, I would imagine that Plumtree would give preference to players who are no longer eligible for Under 21 selection, thus allowing the likes of Daniel Adongo (if fit), Ross Cronje and Rosco Speckman to feature, with Gouws Prinsloo, Cobus Reinach and Siseko Jafta further strengthening the Sharks Under 21 side that faces their Bulls counterparts on the same day.

Possible Sharks team:

15 Louis Ludik, 14 Mark Richards**, 13 Stefan Terblanche (capt), 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Sbura Sithole**, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Fred Michalak, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Marcell Coetzee*, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Ross Skeate, 4 Anton Bresler*,3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Eugene van Staden
16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Dale Chadwick, 18 Jandre Marais**, 19 Daniel Adongo**, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 Marius Joubert, 22 Rosco Speckman

* denotes first Currie Cup start
** denotes Currie Cup debut

  • Not a bad team with all the Super Rugby players that we are currently missing! I think the old man Joubert should replace the older man Terblanche and let either Daniel or Skeate captain the side.

  • @The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 1) : My Shark’s team would then look like this:

    Starting XV:
    1 Van Staden
    2 Burden
    3 Herbst
    4 Bresler
    5 Skeate (vice-captain)
    6 Botes
    7 Coetzee
    8 Daniel (captain)
    9 Michalak
    10 Potgieter / Bosman
    11 Sithole
    12 Bosman / Potgieter
    13 Joubert
    14 Richards
    15 Ludik

    Bench: 16 Cooper 17 Chadwick 18 Marias 19 Adongo 20 Cronje 21 Terblanche 22 Speckman

It would also be interesting to see how Bosman would do at flyhalf and Potgieter at inside center. Just something I think the coaches should consider looking into. Potgieter to kick at goal in the first half and if his kicking boots are at home then Bosman to take over in the second half.

  • Not a bad team if you consider all the players missing due to Bok call ups. I do however feel that the Cheetahs will be the team to beat in this year’s campain and Griquas will also be play-off contenders.

  • I also think bosman at 10 could be a good move come preparation for Super Rugby 2012, lambie and Freddie can cover 10 and bosman can cover 10, 12 and kicking!!!if he trains…then again I feel for JLP he has the goods just needs to arrive…Terblance is my concern…I love the man, he is the greatest leader in recent years but time must be up now? Let’s back Goosen, sithole and rotate Joubert and Terblance with youngsters…and let’s take a chance for a shock loss or 2 and build something for the next few years….

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : Who knows but I can garuntee that he is faster than Terblanche. Remember the final Super Rugby group fixture against the Bulls, when Terblanche scored the try he was very nearly caught by Basson. If it had been Robbie Fruen or Jaque Fourie that had recieved that ball they would have put it down in between the poles. Lack of pace is one of the main things that has counted against Terblanche wearing the number 13 jersey.

I’m all in for the youngsters been given a shot at Currie Cup this season, however for those who are conservative and want experience (Terblanche) on the field then the best option is to stick him at fullback and not in the pacey positions of wing and outside center.

I am happy though that the Sharks are finally stocking up in positions where they need new players unlike a couple of years ago when they only bought players in positions we had more than enough depth in!!

Lesson 1 – buy players for positions you are shallow in – check.
Lesson 2 – buy younger players that aren’t past their prime – still to be learned… 👿

The Ebersohns were bubbling under and when they were given they chance they showed what they had. Cronje’s don’t have that. The Cronje’s are in amongst that VERY big group of great age group players that just don’t have what it takes to play open age group rugby.

    Sad but true.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 29) : hang on… let’s be fair here. My recollection of events was that it took the Ebersohns about 2-3 seasons of senior rugby to start showing results. They certainly weren’t superstars from the moment they were introduced.

Compare that to the Cronje’s, who have about 5 senior caps between them. I’m not convinced yet thatRoss and Guy should be thrown away without at least giving them an extended run in Currie Cup to see what they can do.

  • May 13, 2011 Clermont Auvergne 27 – 17 Biarritz Marius played 13
Seemed to be injured for a few weeks before that

    Apr 2, 2011 Clermont Auvergne 41 – 13 Biarritz Played 12
    Mar 26, 2011 Agen 26 – 17 Clermont Auvergne Played 12
    Mar 12, 2011 Castres 23 – 19 Clermont Auvergne Played 12

It seems he played 12 predominately for them, but he can play both.

    Tri Nations – Johannesburg, 14 August 2004, Boks won 40-26 with Marius scoring a hat-trick from 13.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : I don’t agree.

How much CC Rugby did Sias Ebersohn play before becoming the S15 star that he is? Not a lot I guess. He stepped from VC to S15 I believe.

Robert played one season of S14 and did damn well but decided to skip one maybe 2 seasons to play 7s and let his body mature before playing S14 again (as told to me by the Blits Bokke physio)

Both Ebersohns shone when they stepped up to the big stage and I believe neither of the Cronje’s did.

If you are top class you don’t need an extended run to show what you have. You do it in the 1st game. Ask Pat Lambie. 😉

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 36) : Why make them compete? Bosman hasn’t been great at 12, he doesn’t attack the gameline. But he has been good at offloading the ball. So move him out one where he gets the ball on the gainline and can offload the wings into space. Put Joubert inside him as he does have a go at the opposition.

  • @Gaff (Comment 38) : “…and I would rather have someone running lines off him.” And *that* has been the exact problem with the Sharks centres of late; centre pairs are all about one creating the opportunities, and the other running the right lines to capitalise on those opportunities. I believe Bosman can create the opportunities, but then you need someone outside of him who doesn’t look a practical demonstration of the principles of inertia…

The Sharks have shown they can win this tournament, it is the Super Rugby trophy that is missing. I’ll get passionate about rugby again in September and then again in February next year. Now I’ll just watch, because it is on, not because I want to.
