A clear-cut path to Saturday’s unofficial final has already been mapped out for the winners of the Free State vs Blue Bulls clash.
The two highly rated teams were actually the odds on favourites to meet on Wednesday, long before Craven Week even started. Now resounding Day 1 wins has sparked debate over who the favourites are going into this game. This has even led to discussions turning to the current form and even the result of match involving the two rugby unions’ main feeder schools, in an effort to pick a winner.
In this respect Grey College of Bloemfontein are unbeaten in 2011 and are the number 1 ranked team in the country. Waterkloof by comparison are recognised as a very talented team who have underachieved this season and are now ranked closer to 10 than 1. Crucially one of the two big games that Waterkloof has lost in 2011 was back in May in the self-same town of Kimberley to the mighty Grey College. It was a tight game that Waterkloof appeared to have in the bag, only to see victory snatched away from them at the death. Whether much can be drawn from that result remains to be seen but it does lead to interesting comments about each provincial team’s BMT.
Kwa-Zulu Natal has been presented with a golden opportunity to advance to Saturday’s main game following a hard fought and well-deserved win against Western Province. KZN will meet the Golden Lions, impressive winners against Eastern Province, in the last game on Thursday afternoon. Despite being given this top billing status, much will however depend on the outcome of the Border -Western Province game. Although WP’s hopes of making the televised final were dashed by KZN, Border go into the clash undefeated and a convincing win may persuade selectors that they, Border are the team most worthy of a place in the final game.
For KZN the challenge will once again be in the set-pieces. Holding their own against a Lions team that looked to have few difficulties at scrum-time or in the lineouts is vital. If they do not expend too much energy and can secure decent possession from set-pieces, KZN should be more than a match for their Krugersdorp, sorry Jozi based rivals in the loose and amongst the backs.
Crucial to this Game 2 round of fixtures are the teams’ Game 1 reserves. In terms of the rules these reserves are now guaranteed a start. This means that, in the absence of valid reasons such as an injury to a Game 1 reserve player, each team is required to make 7 changes to their starting line-ups.
For KZN the likely changes are:
1. Equally adept Pina for his Glenwood teammate Worrall-Clare at tighthead,
2. Versatile Collopy who will no doubt be asked to double as a fetcher for Taylor at hooker,
3. Big, physical Horn for Klingenberg at lock,
4. Buthelezi, the best tackler in KZN for Game 1 standout player Nanto at openside flanker,
5. Cope, the creative and quick DHS captain for R.du Preez at flyhalf,
6. Marwana, the quick and skilful utility back for Sithole on the right wing,
7. And the most difficult decision of them all will probably have to be made at centre where talented young Kearsney playmaker Khubeka either has to replace the defensive stalwart Moolman or the powerful attacker Fisher.
The idea of move Fisher out to wing must certainly be on the mind of Coach Steyn, however this would involve relegating hotstepping fullback Mbembe Payi, who has just registered himself as an SA Schools candidate with his performance against WP.

Nice story there Beet, I’m actually regretting turning down your offer to stay at your house for the recent Kearsney Festival. Definitely next year. You can write well, easy on the brain. Hope you can drink well.
Tomorrow is gonna be huge, where’s Carel Swart? He was so impressive at Puk festival. Beet, you see now, size not everything.
@speartackle (Comment 3) : Spear, I get a feeling Jackson Buthelezi will be assigned the difficult role of keeping Stoney quiet tomorrow.

EP 3 – 3 Leopards
@speartackle (Comment 3) : Carel played yesterday. I think the 2 big Province boys Dercksen and Carlsson overshadowed him a bit.
Carel is good at running between defenders and yesterdays confrontations were centred around running into walls where the du Preez twins with their good upperbody strength are better.
@Ben (Comment 5) : Have you recovered from the massacre?
Leopards lucky not to have 2 red cards after that “tackle”
@speartackle (Comment 7) : Yeah I’m fine. WP got slaughtered, remember?

@Ben (Comment 21) : Jy sê jy bly in Rustenburg?
Like dit 🙂
Enige ‘long distance’ voorkeur/voorliefde/bewondering vir n span word blykbaar slegs geklassifiseer as n ‘bewonderaar’
Nogal interessant, ne?

@Ben (Comment 34) : lekke timing I’ll say, om sick te wees 🙂
@franshark (Comment 36) : Very lekker! 🙂
Mag mens hier afrikaans praat?

26-19 to Pumas

36-19 to the Pumas. Too many penalties given away by Boland
Half Time
Pumas 36 – 19 Boland
THe Pumas are almost improving on the Bulls’ score against Boland. I’m changing my prediction for this afternoon – OFS by 21 – and also SWD by 31.
@speartackle (Comment 53) : The Greystaat winning streak goes back to 2009. My prediction is it will end today. If these Klofies don’t come right today they risk being labelled as chokers. The battle up front + at 10,12 & 13 will be good.
Pumas lead 43-19
@speartackle (Comment 39) : Did you not follow the link I gave you yesterday?
@beet (Comment 54) : This will be huge, hope I make it to Krugies in time for game. I still believe Waterkloof have the most talented team of all schools in SA whether they’re soldiers of fortune or not. BMT will be the factor, does Tredoux have it? Those Grey boys just seem so relaxed under pressure as if they know the ball is going to bounce right or the ref will give a penalty within kicking distance. I also like Irne Herbst, the lock, and I think Christoff du Bruin, the other lock converted from wing will start. Have you seen him, a 2m boy that can run like Bolt and jump like Hestrie, Roelof Smit also so talented. I’m so excited I feel like talking sense for the rest of the day.
@speartackle (Comment 60) : As jy stil bly sal jy altyd een wees. 😆
Is bruin jou regte haarkluer of is jy eintlik blond? 😛
Boland have been very disappointing. To think they gave us a good hiding last year. 51-26 the Pumas. Jason Kriel looks like he has a future in rugby tho

Scary. Mabuza is the lightest Bull fwd at 103kg. That would make him the heaviest KZN player by 3kg
@KSA Shark © (Comment 119) : All they’re doing is tackling at the moment.
@McLovin (Comment 114) : I almost thouhgt that was the score ooooo
Use Half time to check the last 7ls of the TDF. It is PISSING with rain.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 119) : OVS are getting killed in the scrums and suffocated in the midfield.
Some Greystaat supporters must be hoping for uncontested scrums, only problem is they have 2 reserve props.

No! Impossible! They should never have won that game. Just like Grey College vs Waterkloof.

Missed. 😯
FINAL SCORE
Bulls 11 – 14 Grey
😥 😥 this us heartbreaking defence wins you games that is why free state won
How long will Lady Luck still be with these boys?
@beet (Comment 151) : 😥 Sadly the bulls francois tradoux buckled under pressure we had free state
@beet (Comment 151) : and Grey Bloem vs Affies.
Well done Vrystaat! To withstand that kind of pressure and come out on top.
Bulls gave away too many penalties at ruck time, shooting themselves in the foot when on attack.
@speartackle (Comment 154) : So true!
@McLovin (Comment 149) : the ones form Pretoria Boys High
@speartackle (Comment 154) : @Muzi (Comment 155) : It’s like watching a rerun of Grey Bloem vs Waterkloof or Affies
@McLovin (Comment 157) : It was pressure BMT is what won free state the match.
@McLovin (Comment 152) : thanks for the score updates 🙂
@beet (Comment 160) : Spot on the samething happened in the wildeklawer week beet we had grey 😥
Jan Serfontein is indeed the real deal
@McLovin (Comment 149) : That Bulls no.12 played really well and is still up for contractual grabs.
Janco Gunther is his name.
@Muzi (Comment 164) : His hands are amazing
@beet (Comment 158) : How many now?
vs Monnas at Kearsney
vs Waterkloof at Wildeklawer
vs Selborne
vs Paarl Boishaai
vs Affies
vs WaterBulls
These boys have special abilities, they show absolute calmness even when completely overpowered. Like a Steven Seagal movie.
@beet (Comment 166) : Beet he is amazing it’s his size that makes it difficult to stop him.
@beet (Comment 166) : Jaco Gunther is weighing up his options
@Muzi (Comment 169) : I didn’t think Engelbrecht exercised the best options for most of the game. I thought he could have done more for the cause.
For the first time ever, I believe the David and Goliath story.
@beet (Comment 170) : In my honest opinion carlo engelbrecht has beem the best srcumhalf in the craven week he ran the show like a general but like tradoux he is talented yet still lacks decision making at times but iwas satisfied with our bulls under 19 scrumhlaf next year.
@beet (Comment 170) : Really 😥 for water bulle this team was the one they could stop grey free state tjoe 😥
So let’s get ready for tomorrow. Lions by 16.
@speartackle (Comment 174) : I like it when you predict against us, we end up winning. 😆

A very frustrating first half for KZN. Too many basic errors and not acknowledging the ref’s technical strictness at the breakdown.

man, that’s harsh…
Well done Lions. Nice come back by our boys, thought they could have won it but that how it goes.
What a shocking decision! The Lions player was holding on. Tackler had released him and the Natal player contesting the ball was on his feet. Lions player did not release the ball, how was it a penalty to the Lions then?
@war1 (Comment 281) : Plenty of ‘questionable’ decision throughout the tournament.

@war1 (Comment 281) : I don’t think he was on his feet. He’s legs didn’t support his body weight.
@McLovin (Comment 282) : Yeah the ref did not have such a good game, missed lots, both ways. I suppose the refs need to develop just like the players do.
@war1 (Comment 281) : Have no idea either why that penalty was given.
Anyhow well done to our boys. They came back well.
@Ben (Comment 283) : I don’t agree, but anyway what is done is done.
Well done the KrugerLions
Enormous Monnas guts shown by the Lions. Their back 3 kept the Sharks in the game. Have never seen a worse display by 2 wings and a fullback in my life. They have contracts which make it worse. All credit to the Lions pack with Stoney and Chris Massyn and the 2 locks devastating.
I cannot believe those du Preez twins are only 15. They were immense along with Fisher. Sad that there had to be loser but the Lions 10 showed BMT with that last kick.
You win some you lose some 🙁
