Jafta injury causes back-row reshuffle for Sharks under 21s

Sharks under 21 coach Sean Everitt has been forced to name lock forward Peet Marais out of position on the blindside flank for this weekend’s opening clash against the Blue Bulls at Kings Park. An injury to regular number 7 Siseko Jafta will at least give the coaches a chance to see more of their second-row stars in action.

Westville’s Monde Hadebe leads the side from hooker and is one of a number of returnees from last year’s team. Hadebe has also played for South Africa at under 20 level, as well as picking up a few Vodacom Cup caps along the way. He’ll be joined by the impressive Jubz Mkhize and Nic Schonert in the front row – the latter fresh from his exploits with the Baby Boks in Italy. The lock combo is an exciting one, with Pieter-Steph du Toit fresh out of school – he’s only 18 years old and played for the SA High Performance team last year – joining the huge Karolis Navickas in the second row. The latter is a 2.02m beast from the Ukraine who has already played senior representative rugby for Russia.

Look out for the introduction of yet more seriously tall timber off the bench, with the 2.06m Johan Schoonbie named as reserve lock.

The elevation of Francois Kleinhans to the senior side has opened the door for Chris Cloete to start at open side flank – the young man saw his under 19 season cruelly curtailed when he broke his leg in the opening fixture last year. He’ll be joined by Marais and Sevens Bok Tera Mtembu in a well-balanced loose trio.

Scrumhalf Charlie Purdon gets a shot to impress now that Cobus Reinach has moved up, with Willie du Plessis returning from last year’s team at flyhalf. The centre pair of Heimar Williams and Piet Lindeque are well established by now, while the back three of Jaco van Tonder, Nico van der Westhuizen and Gouws Prinsloo have all been in the system for some time and know what’s expected of them.

Another player who’s made good progress back after a bad knee injury last year is reserve flyhalf Drew Norton, named on the bench alongside another flyhalf, Fred Zeilinga, who will also start for the under 19s in what’s sure to be a busy afternoon for him. Kayde Fisher, whose brother Tyler has been so influential for the KZN team at Craven Week, is named in the number 22 jersey.

  • @robdylan (Comment 30) : The Bulls team is like a who’s who of players predicted to go far in rugby ever since they were u16.

We look like we’re building a Cup winning team for 2012.

For now being the humble underdog works, next year I’ll go and post our team on BullsWorld and then mouth off like a certain somebody I know.

Also would love to know which Bulls prop is going to get the better of “straight-back Nic”…

And as for Piet against that overrated Moolman… one-way traffic. Lindeque hat trick!

  • @robdylan (Comment 35) : I’m really looking forward to watching the Heimar-Piet midfield partnership. It caused the JWC pair of Venter-Moolman much grief last year. Hopefully the trend continues.
