One of two really close games this weekend, with an understrength Western Province taking on a nearly full strength Griquas outfit, and should Sarel Pretorius have been fit for this match, I would go as far as saying that Griquas would have been clear favourites.
The Province coaches are putting a lot of faith in their youth structures, much the same as the other two Springbok-less unions, and have a very young team lead by Deon Fourie. Interesting players in the lineup include Hilton Lobberts at lock after some good club play, and the selction of Johann Sadie and JJ Engelbrecht, even thpugh both have already signed with the Bulls.
Griquas opted to keep Earl Rose on the bench, with Monty Dumond getting the nod in the flyhalf jersey, with Shannon Rick needing to fill the very big boots left empty by Pretorius who is injured. The team is led by Jonathan Mokuena from eighthman.
The game kicks off at 15h00.
Western Province: WP: Conrad Jantjies; JJ Engelbrecht, Johann Sadie, Tim Whitehead, Danie Poolman; Gary van Aswegen, Louis Schreuder; Nick Koster, Siya Kolisi, Wimpie van der Walt, De Kock Steenkamp, Hilton Lobberts, Brock Harris, Deon Fourie (capt), Baba Blaauw.
Reserves: Tiaan Liebenberg, Frans Malherbe, Adriaan Fondse, Rohan Kitshoff, Nick Groom, Demetri Catrakilis, Marcel Brache.
Griquas: 15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Richard Lawson, 13 Wilmaure Louw, 12 Barry Geel, 11 Rocco Jansen, 10 Monty Dumond, 9 Shannon Rick, 8 Jonathan Mokuena (capt), 7 Davon Raubenheimer, 6 Justin Downey, 5 Martin Muller, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Steph Roberts.
Replacements: 16 Matthew Dobson, 17 Jean Botha, 18 Frikkie Spies, 19 Jaco Nepgen, 20 Matthew Rosslee, 21 Earl Rose, 22 Fabien Juries.

PROOOOOOOOOOOOVIIIIIIIIIIIINCE!!!!!!!!!
I’m sorry but without Super Sarel I really don’t see the Griquas finishing victors, I am expecting big things from Johann Sadie though – he has class!
@McLovin (Comment 1) : That’s what everyone shouted last year in the final and we all know how that ended
😀
Province will no doubt look the dominant team in the initial stages and then flop come finals time!
😈
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 3) : Have to get to the final first.
My expectations are pretty low for the Currie Cup. 😐
Hope someone will be giving us updates for both the WP and Cheetahs games 😕
@McLovin (Comment 4) : Looking at the WP team it ain’t that bad, just young. You guys have good players in some key positions.
You have a good, young flyhalf in Gary Van Aswegen who has been proven at Super Rugby level and you also have a future Springbok in Johann Sadie who has the “X Factor”. You might struggle a bit in the lineouts but I think we will see an improvement in the scrums with an experienced prop in Brok Harris and hooker in Deon Fourie. You guys just need to remain consistent.
I don’t however see you guys reaching the semi’s this year, and if you do it won’t be a top-of-the-log performance either.
@JarsonX (Comment 5) : I might be able to. Will have to see though.
@McLovin (Comment 4) : I’m with you on that one 🙁
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 6) : Can’t really disagree with anything there. 🙂
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 7) : Especially the unbroadcasted Cheetahs game, Stormers game will be covered by a few people as usual
Lets try and Not post to many comments here, don’t wanna slow it down when the game is on. 🙂
@JarsonX (Comment 10) : If I do cover the Stormers game imma show you all how to do it!
It will be as if you’re watching it live. 🙂
@JarsonX (Comment 5) :
I’ll be on for both the WP and the Sharks games.
Maybe RSG will do the Cheetahs game. Also the Cheetahs’ FB guys give very good updates.

I’m sure it must be half-time now for the Cheetahs vs Leopards game. Here is a summary of the first half:
Cheetahs 35 – 5 Leopards
WP Nel (3rd min), Andries Strauss (16th min), Rayno Benjamin (24th min), Corne Uys (32nd min) and Philip Burger (35th min) all touched down for the Cheetahs. Sias Ebersohn converted 2 tries and Riaan Smit converted the remaining 3 tries.
Wainon Willis (29th min) scored the only Leopard’s points. Clayton Durand seems to be having an off day with a missed penalty in the 14th minute as well as a missed conversation.
Stay tuned for the second half, exclusively live to Sharksworld. 😉
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 83) : I also have Cheetahs by 26, I can’t spell as good as u but pick the same 🙂
