The game we are waiting for and most certainly the game of the round, the defending champions get their defence of the Cup underway at home against the mighty Bulls.
Whether they will still be known as the mighty Bulls with the team that was announced, I am not quite sure, but for two teams that have lost in total 32 players to the Springbok setup, they will both do well to put up competitive teams.
The Sharks are to be led by Keegan Daniel and have only three players who played in the Currie Cup Final last year. This match will also see the beginning of another chapter in the Marius Joubert book of life, as he gets his Sharks career going.
The Bulls are captained by Gary Botha from the front row, and have a few more survivors from last year’s semifinals, but still lack the big names. They do have some Springbok experience in Dewald Potgieter and Akona Ndungane lurking in the team.
The game kicks off at 17h05.
Sharks: 15. Stefan Terblanche, 14. Louis Ludik, 13. Marius Joubert, 12. Meyer Bosman, 11. Mark Richards, 10. Frederic Michalak, 9. Ross Cronje, 8. Keegan Daniel (Capt), 7. Marcell Coetzee, 6. Jacques Botes, 5. Ross Skeate, 4. Anton Bresler, 3. Wiehahn Herbst, 2. Craig Burden, 1. Eugene van Staden
Replacements: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Dale Chadwick, 18. Jan Andre Marais, 19. Francois Kleinhans, 20. Jacobus Reinach, 21. Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22. Sibusiso Sithole
Bulls: Jurgen Visser, Gerhard van den Heever, Stephan Dippenaar, Stefan Watermeyer, Akona Ndungane, Francois Brummer, Dustin Jinka, Gerrit-Jan van Velze, Dewald Potgieter, Derick Kuün, Juandré Kruger, Fudge Mabeta, Rossouw de Klerk, Gary Botha (capt), Corné Fourie.
Replacements: Willie Wepener, Juan Schoeman, Okkie Kruger, CJ Stander, Lohan Jacobs, Marnitz Boshoff, Francois Venter

come on sharks. we may have lost the other games but if we win this one then the day belongs to us!
Im entering this game with no expectations. I have no clue about half of the Sharks players, nor the combinations. I can only be surprised by how they play. Still Sharks to win by 5. Go Sharks!!
Go Sharks! Do your best and a little extra
I know it’s a non related topic but chiefs just won against tottenham

Who wants to buy me a Drifta? Maybe it can be a prize 💡
Keegan Daneil really looking lively! Lineout Bulls on their 22m line
@JarsonX (Comment 36) : Mine too, and I thought of making him my captain darn 🙁
Not in straight from the Bulls again! 3rd scrum, hopefully the Sharks can make this one count! Just outside the Bulls 22.

Sharks very nearly regain from kickoff. Bulls have the ball inside their 22.
Lineout to the Sharks on the halfway line. C’mon boys lets see some tries!
Where are the commentators sitting? I can hear women chatting in the background and earlier what sounded like a baby crying? ❓
Wall of blue awaits the Sharks. Botes knocks-on.
@McLovin (Comment 64) : Whats with the double question marks ❓
Scrappie play from the sharks, as if the game lost a bid of its momentum from the first 15 min
Wow, that went nowhere. Sharks are lacking spark. Should have got some after the early try, but havent
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 66) : Confusion.
Ross cronje is so slow to get the ball out..
So we have a water break in the 21st minute of the match. A scrum to the Bulls on their 10m line. Sharks need to get some points soon.
@franshark (Comment 61) : Phone. 😛 http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9100_galaxy_s_ii-3621.php
Turnover at scrum time. The Sharks have the ball in the Bulls half. Knock-on! Scrum to the Bulls. Sharks need to pick up their game!
??? Was promising until it broke down again
@JarsonX (Comment 72) : How do u make links clickable? 😕
Bulls “hanging” around the loose scrums on the off side slowing the ball… Fustrating me
Penalty at the scrum. Kickable penalty. Michalak will have a shot at goal. about 45m at a slight angle.
Sharks 10 – 9 Bulls

@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 80) : Small lead but a lead nonetheless 😈
The Bulls have a lineout on the Sharks 10m line. Turnover! Sharks are building now in the Bulls half. Penalty to the Sharks. Good play here from the men in black.
nice play boys
Sharks catch the Bulls ‘met ‘n slapriem’. 😆
Lol Brilliant Freddy!!!!! 🙂
Loose trio combined very well there.
what a try!
try ludik…french poodle made it
Brilliant
Brilliant clever play from Michalak! He kicks for touch but makes sure it doesn’t go out so Ludik is in for the try in the corner! Bulls caught napping.
Sharks 15 Bulls 9
Happier that they getting penalized for slowing the ball down…. Awesome Fredie
6 point lead. Something to build on.
Stef keeps popping up in the centres. Does he know he has a 15 on his back today?
burden should’ve played in super rugby before smit, the guy is a livewire
Sharks knockon. Bulls have the scrum just past the Sharks 10m line. 29 minutes have elapsed.
@McLovin (Comment 83) : 😎 @franshark (Comment 82) : better? 🙂
Sharks have had 74% of the possession in the first half.
Loose pass by the Bulls sees them going backwards but they are awarded a kickable penalty.
@Ben (Comment 96) : He loves it at 13 🙂
Sharks 15 – 9 Bulls
31min
Sharks 15 – 9 Bulls. 31 minutes played. Bulls just missed a penalty.
Sharks defending well now, Phase 12 by the Bulls.
Brummer misses is second drop goal attempt.
Bulls go through a million phases and go nowhere. 🙄
Mark Richards chases the 22m drop out well. Daneil takes well in the air.
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 105) : Is he trying to be the next Loftus ‘Liefling’ 😈
Michalak clearance charged diown but there is a penalty awarded to the Sharks (luckily).
That was a very fortunate penalty..
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 107) : Spelling brother ‘Daneil’ 😉
Keegan having a great game! Leading by example.
@Ben (Comment 96) : Ben are u gonna watch the Aus game tommorow morning?
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 109) : @JarsonX (Comment 111) : ‘diown’
Michalak launches a bomb. The Bulls gather well in the air but knock the ball on. Scrum to the Sharks in the 37th minute, just inside the Bulls half.
Sharks run the Bulls ragged.
yes plz!
Sharks 22 – 9 Bulls
39min
@franshark (Comment 113) : Don’t know. Depends on what time I get into bed tonight.
Great break Cronje, but what a loose trio!!
Marcell Coetzee with a try! Excellent break by Ross Cronje with a dummy and then a step.
Sharks 22 Bulls 9
38th minute
Don’t u just love rugby 🙂
One more try needed for the bonus point.
@JarsonX (Comment 111) : @JarsonX (Comment 114) : I’m watching while typing. Give me a break! 😀
Now for an even better 2nd half from the Sharks, GO SHARKS!!!
The halftime whistle blows as 2 of the players (one from either team) are down right next to each other. Huge collasion!!!
Sharks lead at halftime by 22 points to the 9 of the Bulls.
good first half sharkies
@franshark (Comment 125) : Looking at our performance in general we really should make it to the top of the log this season! Our loose trio is just great. Cronje is making the step-up as well.
lets do this for a full 80!
The summary of the first half scores.
For the Sharks we had tries from Marcell Coetzee, Louis Ludik and Frederic Michalak. Michalak converted two of those tries and also added a penalty.
Brummer kicked 3 penaltes, missing only one. He also missed 2 drop goal attempts
The Sharks didn’t start the first half well but made up for that with a try. They then slacked off a litte bit again and the Bulls regained the lead with 2 penalties. The Sharks responded with a try from Ludik, setup by Michalak who caught the Bulls napping. The Bulls then starting attacking again but the Sharks held off with some excellent, immenatrable defence which fustrated the Bulls to the extent that they started going for drop goals. The Sharks rounded off the half with a suberb try.
Lets hope for more of the magic in the second half!
keegan been leading from the front
@RuckingFun (Comment 132) : Keegan is the man of the match for the first half!
Keegan has been showing his skill with some good runs and set up Coetzee’s try! Good choice by Plum to make him captain. Oupa looks at home in the number 15 jersey right now.
Did anyone see that bounce by Watermeyer?? Only positive for the Bulls!
😆
2nd half under way
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 124) : good commentary, but no break for the Teacher, get it right 🙂
Nervous start by the Sharks! Bulls win a penalty and take it quickly!
@franshark (Comment 136) : 😎 I’ll try 😀
Bulls loose the Ball as they go over the line!! Bulls taking it quickly agin. They want a try.
TMO time for Bulls.
Gees the sharks under presure here, TMO?
TMO Bulls over
Try to the TMO. Probably is a try. Good start from the Bulls. Sharks held off well though. Not clear from video evidencee.
No try.
Try?? My feed has crashed
I am guessing it will be a 5m scrum.
Lost Forward. Great defence
GREAT Richard and kie!!!!
Try saving tackle from the youngster Mark Richards!! 5m scrum to the Sharks.
Sharks need to watch the charging down of their kicks. It has happened twice already. Bulls get a free kick at scrum time.
Presure again
Derick Kuun through for the try. 45th minute. Good work by the Sharks to hold them off for so long!
Damn!! Too much pressure too long. Should have made more of the defensive scrum
This touch..pause…….engage rulling is killing teams..
Kuun runs over Bosman for a try. 🙄 😆
Meyer Bosman missing tackles again! 👿
Sharks 22 Bulls 14
45th minutes try by Kuun, converted by Brummer.
Bad missed tackle from Meyer 🙁
Bosman returning to his old ways. Missed many a tackle today. Poor!
Come on Sharks! You can do this! 😀
Come on return the favour. Turn pressure into points
Ross Cronje with an excellent turnover at scrum time. Sharks build, then a loose pass is picked up by the Bulls but they are driven into touch! Sharks lineout deep inside the Bulls half!
50/50 possession for the second half so far.
TMO
BP try?
Cronje has been great! Another dummy and step and he brings the Sharks within 2m. Keegan Daniel goes over. TMO has the decision.
TMO!
TMO. Ref – “give me a reason why I can’t award this try.”
Should be a try.
That’s a try!!!!
@McLovin (Comment 164) : I think so.
The Question is “Give me a reason I can’t award the try?”
Starting XV try!!!!
AWARDED
Oh yes! Bonus point, now kick on and win
lekker!
Finally at home and able to watch the game! And I have a baby sitter 😀
Sharks get the bonus point! Try to captain Daniel, he deserves it.
Sharks 29 Bulls 14
50th minute try to Keegan Daniel, converted by Michalak.
My margin is 17 so this score can stay
@KSA Shark © (Comment 169) : Daniel FL Player Bonus Point Try! 😎
Silly offside penalty given away by the Bulls. Sharks will look to clear.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 169) : ja mine too, looks like we all have the same payers 🙂
@KSA Shark © (Comment 169) : I thought you only had Lions, WP and Cheatahs in your Starting xv?
Throw not straight from the Sharks. Michalak didn’t gain that much ground with his clearance kick either. Bulls have a scrum just the other side of their 10m line. Another steal by Cronje coming up?
Bulls building now deep insid e the Sharks half after a dropped bomb by Ludik. Sharks defence ie holding… just.
Sharks have mae 60 tackles, 2 more than the Bulls.
Bulls win a penalty and go for the 5m lineout.
Stefan! 🙄
Marais makes his debut as Bresler goes off injured. Well done to the youngster! 🙂
meyer bosman, what more can i say? 😕
Sharks concede another penalty. Take it quickly.
Some big hits from the Sharks! Bulls just outside the Sharks 22. 74 tackles made by the Sharkies right now!
Kuun Looks like a flippen PROP!!!!!!!
Loose pass but unfortunately the Sharks boot into touch or else it would have been away for a try!
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 186) : Missed??
Holy Cow, the sharks are holding on, but need to get out of pressure.
GOOD DEFENCE!!!!
Bulls look very tired.
So we are into the final quarter of the game. Kleinhans is making his debut as Botes leaves the field. Bulls have had 68% of the possession in the second half. Lineout to the Bulls just outside the Sharks 22.
20min to go
Good breakout. Pity about the finish
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 193) : And 85% territory to the Bulls as well.
64% in our 22. 😯
Turnover at the lineout and the Sharks break all the way into the Bulls 22 but then a poor pass sees the Sharks knock it on.
Some great offload and passes as well as linking play by the Sharks! Really looking lively are the backline!
Bulls scrum in the 62nd minute.
Penalty time. Would be nice to extend the lead beyond 2 scores.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 196) : Yet the Bulls have nothing to show for it. 😯 Brilliant defence effort from our boys! 🙂
Bulls being given a hiding today.
Who is the Bulls player who will retire at the end of the season to go back farming?
if it’s Kuun he has already started by the looks of it.
The Sharks gain a 16 point lead.
Sharks 32 Bulls 16
63rd minute penalty by Michalak.
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 193) : of witch 64% within the sharks 22
hammer it home!
How could Andy Capastagnio call for a Red card after two guys in the air collide. 😕
@KSA Shark © (Comment 201) :
Marius Joubert hasnt looked to pass the ball too much.
A penalty to the Sharks for taking Terblanche out of the air! We win the lineout and then grubber the ball into touch after a loose pass. Meyer Bosman has been the only negative of the backline today.
15 min to go
Raining now.
Bulls have only one 1 of their own lineout! 😯
We have won 7 and turned over 3.
Bulls have 2 front row replacements on the field so they are looking for an improvement in the scrums. Sharks win the sscrum though.
Mark Richards looks about 12
How much time left?
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 208) : I think you should add Marius Joubert to a list of underperformers.
That was close to the clincher!!
Sharks have been building in the Bulls 22 for some time now but a forward pass breaks the move down.
Now when Joubert does pass he stuffs it up. Maybe if he passed more often he would get it right.
@JarsonX (Comment 213) : 12min
Burden coming of after a good game 🙂
@lostfish (Comment 217) : Stransky is pretty clear in his dislike of Joubert’s performance 😆
@KSA Shark © (Comment 214) : He hasn’t been as bad, and he is new so I think he has a reason to struggle.
Kyle Cooper is on for Craig Burden. 69 minutes have passed and the Bulls win a penalty deep inside their half.
At least 1 more kick or try or both for my FL please
@KSA Shark © (Comment 201) : Yup its the very one Derrick Groin Kuun.
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 221) : So new players have an excuse to not pass? 😛
@KSA Shark © (Comment 220) : I was expecting more, especially after seeing him play so well for Clermont
Mark Richard hoists and chases excellently. He really is a good find and will give Ndungane and Mvovo a good run for this money if they return to the Sharks.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 224) : @lostfish (Comment 225) : No that is not what I meant. But give him some time and you will see. Don’t judge him by one performance. Bosman has been crap the whole season!
@JarsonX (Comment 222) : we need 12 more points to top the log. 🙂
Defense has been awesome except for the Bosman misses.
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 221) : I agree with KSA. Marius has been selfish and kak!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 228) : That would be even better 😛
Perfect start to the season for the Sharks.
Did Odwa move to the Bulls or are the commentators confused
@lostfish (Comment 225) : So MANY players play well in the slower NH and then struggle on our harder faster fields.
Sharks with a lineout just inside the Bulls half. Redlinghuiys (spelling?) has just come on to make his debut. Hopefully the Sharks can get one more try as they deserve it. 7 and a half minutes remaining in the first half.
How much time is left now?
@Ben (Comment 230) : Don’t judge him on one performance.
@lostfish (Comment 233) : Odwa Ndungane is our twin, Akona is the Bulls’ twin.
Sharks 35 Bulls 16
74th minute penalty goal by Michalak. I would have gone for the corner though.
@JarsonX (Comment 236) : @The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 235) : Got it 😎
@KSA Shark © (Comment 238) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 234) : true
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 237) : Am I not judging him on this performance? That is what I’m doing. I’m saying he was kak in this game. I’m not saying he is kak!
3rd time a Shark’s clearance kick was charged down! 😯 We made the break though but then knocked the ball on with a poor pass…
All our subs are on the field right now.
A nightmare 1min for JLP
@Ben (Comment 230) : kak is a bit to strong a word for his performance.
He has been mediocre.
@Ben (Comment 242) : 😎
@lostfish (Comment 241) : yes they are confused 🙂
@lostfish (Comment 241) : I meant that the commentators keep referring to Odwa
Very well done Sharks 😀
@KSA Shark © (Comment 247) : me too, lack of sleep is getting to me
Bulls with a scrum inside their half. Lets hope that the Sharks can score one more try to make it look like a proper lashing!
Bulls can only hope to sulvage some pride.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 245) : Yup that’s fair. He’s making silly mistakes though. Meyer has been awful!
MoM ross cronje
The Bulls throw a shocker of a pass!! Less than half a minute left now as the Sharks have the put-in to the scrum.
@Ben (Comment 230) : no ben, he did not set the seen alight but was not THAT bad..
@Megatron (Comment 253) : Nah I think Keegan Daniel deserves it. Final score 35-16.
Professional performance all round.
GREAT GREAT GAME SHARKS !!!!
SB: 3 from 4 with 2 margin points.
LMS: Still Alive.
FL:
5 Starting xv tries
2 other tries
14 Starting xv kicks
6 other kicks
😎
Life is beautiful!
And we go 2nd on the log with the Cheetahs at the top with a better PD
i don’t know how anyone can justify meyer bosman’s selection…i really don’t
Michalak has surprised me with his goal kicking.
Well done boys. Great stuff. Let’s now go and build on this and don’t piss it away like we did in SupeRugby.
Please. Thank You
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 256) : AGREE keegan was Awesome
what a superb performance… good work team!
What performance by the Sharks. Good attitude on attack and defense, that was probably the difference between what looked like pretty evenly matched teams on paper.
GREAT GAME BY THE SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the Sharks walk out with a dominant performance over the bulls. 3 tries in the first half were followed by a sole effort in the second half where the Sharks were made to defend for large periods of time only conceding 7 points!
Michalak, Ludik, Coetzee and Daniel all touched down for the Sharks. Michalak kicked 3/4 conversions and also added 3 penalties for a personal tally of 15 points.
Kuun, who will give up rugby for farming next year, scored his team’s only try and Brummber weighted in with a conversion and 3 penalties.
The Sharks gathered a full house today and will lead the log.
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 256) : have to say that was good commentary, my phone will not keep up if I had to do that kind off commentary… Thanks dude, ang I don’t mind the spelling mistakes if I understand what u say 🙂
A great way to start the season 😎
@KSA Shark © (Comment 260) : Ah damn!
LMS after this game.
143 teams entered the game:
137 still alive.
8 still alive with no lifeline.
6 out of the game.
@franshark (Comment 268) : Thanks man 😀
well done boys!
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 270) : No worries, they played the blind school and only scored 40 points.
Keegan very well deserved MOtM
complete opposite of last year, hopefully we have the same end result
@KSA Shark © (Comment 271) : 😎
Keegan Daniel is duely awarded man of the match. He really deserves to be with the Boks but I’m not complaining.
50/50 possesion, Bulls conceded twice as many turnovers as the Sharks. Bulls had 100 rucks and mauls to the Sharks’ 74 so the Sharks made much better use of their ball and kept it alive much better than the Bulls did.
I am pleasantly surprised by our team! Keegs was outstanding, Fred a Maestro (loved the Ludik-trick!) And Marcelle certainly impressed! Well done PLUM!
@franshark (Comment 268) : I 2nd that. great stuff, well done.
@Ben(Comment 262) : ja beslis
@KSA Shark © (Comment 274) : Thats true, but this is why I think the Sharks should have gone for the lineout and not the penalty. While it still would not have made up for PD, it would have been a lot closer and with another try we would be top of the log. Every point can end up counting in the end, just hope it doesn’t cost us.
@Ice (Comment 279) : Are you really that surprised. Imo the Sharks had a much better team on paper.
@Ice (Comment 279) : Coetzee conceded one too many penalties so he needs to clean his act up a bit. And why are you so surprised Ice, we have the skill and talent and while I didn’t expect the win to be so big I did expect it do be dominant.
I think the Pumas in Nelspruit is gonna be a good test for us…
@Ben (Comment 283) : Yes exactly.
@Ben (Comment 283) : I don’t know the youngsters, Benna – so they really impressed me – specially for a 1st game together – a nice combo of youth and experience in the forwards and backs.
Anybody hear what Andy just said to Owen?
@franshark (Comment 285) : Don’t let their performance against the Lions fool you too much. They will be competitive but the Sharks will pick up the victory.
@Ice (Comment 287) : How can you not know the youngsters 😉 😆
are the Sharks playing the Pumas in Nelspruit or Witbank?
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 286) : so many times we were better on paper and it came back and bit us in the ass – so stop being a wise ass! 😉
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 282) : Be a Warrior not a Worrier! 😛
We will triumph. 😎
@Ice (Comment 287) : Yup things are looking up for the future. I want to see a young centre thrown in there. Just to see what they’ve got.
@robdylan (Comment 291) : Wherever the Mbombela stadium is?
Frederic Michalak could give Sony Bill Williams a run for his money with all his slick passing and handling skills! He really was great. Ross Cronje made the step up that all of us have been waiting for. Coetzee played relatively well. In the one run I saw Redlinghuys make he did well drawing in 3 defendars, he also stood up at scrum time. Mark Richards was great and was full of energy. Centers are still a problem for us and hopefully Joubert and Bosman can pick up their game. Bresler was good as well before he was subbed.
@JarsonX (Comment 290) : shhhhhhhh! 😆
@robdylan (Comment 291) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 295) : Nelspruit I believe 😕
Coetzee is a great prospect ,wrap the kid up in contracts so deep hell leave durban when he is 30.
Not convinced with richards ,bosman was poor on defence again.Daniels was fantastic and front row where superb.
@Ice (Comment 292) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 293) : Gang attack stop it! 😉
I know what you mean Ice, that was one of my concerns too before the match which I mentioned to my Bull supporting brother, and KSA Shark… I was just making a point but I take your point!
GO SHARKS!!! 🙂
Jammer Pine Pienaar lots of work to do bulle we need to sort out that tight five ASAP we got bullied sterke!!!!!! under 18.s…undee 21’s…and under 19’s proud of you boys!
@Talent (Comment 299) : Bru, Richards made a try saving tackle and waited in with some good runs including a great kick-and-chase in the second half! What more convincing do you need?
@Muzi (Comment 301) : Well overall the Bulls held the ascendancy today with the score standing at 3/4 but I think coz the Currie Cup is much harder it gets awarded with 5 points and the rest with 1 point… we win then!
😈
Everywhere I look. SS, SARU, SW 😉 , 365 says we are playing in Witbank.
@JarsonX (Comment 259) : the best I’ve ever lied on SW’ SB… 2nd 😛
Well… I am suitably impressed! We played like champs!
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 306) : 😯 I thought you’d been abducted by Aliens. 😯 😯 😯 😯
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 306) : Have you seen the T-shirt thread? You attending either match?
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 306) : Hopefully we can keep the performance at the same standard for the rest of the Currie Cup. 🙂
Alright I’m out for today, great win for our boys and the youngsters did well. The Sharks gelled well as a team with a good mix of youth and experience. They have certainly left me with a reason to smile. 🙂 😎 😛
@KSA Shark © (Comment 308) : Have just come back from a stint in the bush! No comms most of the time! So… Not aliens, or the Bulls! Was abducted, or at least seriously distracted by the Boks on Monday though! Then back in the bush till this evening… Hectic!
Haven’t seen the thread… Am hoping to get to the Durbs test… PE is a mission coz there’s no flights or accommodation!
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 302) : Nah not convinced just my thoughts ,he needs more game time and the cc will serve him well.None of the youngsters are finished products but tome it seems he needs a lot more time to develop.
Well done boys. As I said during SupeRugby, I’m sold on Coetzee and Herbst. Keep it guys, with Keegan in charge we should do well. Nothing lifts a team more than a captain that leads from the front.
