Sharks player ratings v Blue Bulls

The Sharks got their 2011 Currie Cup defence off to a great start on Saturday in downing the Blue Bulls by 35 points to 16. A number of players, both young and old, really stood up and made their mark. Let’s see how the individuals performed.

1) Dale Chadwick. A late addition to the starting lineup after Eugene van Staden was injured at captain’s practice. Chadders enjoyed a superb first start and gave the more experienced Rossouw de Klerk a torrid time in the scrums. Part of a majestic tight five effort that never took a step back all day. 8/10
2) Craig Burden. The all-action number 2 was prominent in virtually everything the Sharks did and responsible for a fair few of his trademark bursts upfield. One of the real standout performers on the day, who would have had a higher rating had he not fluffed a lineout throw or two. 8/10
3) Wiehahn Herbst. The impressive thing about Wors is actually not his scrummaging (although that is superb in itself). It’s the way he throws himself around the field, hitting rucks and making huge tackles that really sets him apart from other 3s… not since BJ Botha have the Sharks had a tight head prop with a similar work rate .9/10
4) Anton Bresler. Did his basics superbly and completely overshadowed his Bulls counterpart in all facets of play. A real pity he had to go off, because he was only getting better as the game went on. 7/10
5) Ross Skeate. A very noticeable presence on the field and never shied away from the tough stuff. Again, made the highly rated Juandre Kruger seem ordinary and would have had a higher score had it not been for a few messy lineouts. 7/10
6) Jacques Botes. Bootise seemed a little quiet out there, but generally that’s an indication that he is throwing body and soul into the tighter exchanges. Always a great link man and continuity player, but in this young side, I was expecting him to stand out a little more. 6/10
7) Marcell Coetzee. A superb Currie Cup debut appearance for a man with a huge rugby future. Scored a lovely try (with a wonderful dive to boot) and was prominent on the drive. Needs to watch his discipline, though, as he gave away a few costly penalties. 8/10
8) Keegan Daniel. Captain courageous was utterly superb on the day and I can’t think of a single thing he did wrong. I’ve been warned not to give perfect ratings, since there is always room for improvement, so I’m going to dock one from the 10 out of 10 I feel he deserves, just to keep him hungry! 9/10

9) Ross Cronje. Here was a player who really had everything riding on this game, one feels and he certainly took his opportunity and made it count. Huge on defence and showed great reading of the game and pin-point tactical kicking. The only criticism is that his service was occasionally a little slow and not as accurate as one would have liked. Still a top performance, though. 8/10
10) Fred Michalak. The most experienced flyhalf in the competition and the best by quite some margin. Fred simply could not be touched on Saturday as he dazzled, flummoxed and bamboozled the opposition with virtually every tough of the ball. Solid on defence and majestic on attack – what a match winner he is! 9/10
11) Mark Richards. A hugely promising display on debut from a man who’s been waiting in the wings (hur hur) for quite some time. Mark didn’t get a huge amount of ball but did enterprising things with what he did get and put in some phenomenal work on defence, belying his size. 7/10
12) Meyer Bosman. Quite simply failed to assert himself, I felt, which was a pity. Meyer should have stood out as one of the few genuinely experienced players on the field, yet while those around him blossomed, he seemed to go into his shell. Didn’t miss a lot of tackles, but missed the one that mattered, leading to the Bulls’ only try. 5/10
13) Marius Joubert. A somewhat inauspicious start for a player who looked as though he was too eager to impress. Worked himself into some good positions and showed that he is still a good centre, but his reluctance to pass meant that far too many moves ended with him going to ground, when the rest of the team was focusing on continuity. Can only improve from here. 6/10
14) Louis Ludik. Huge work rate at wing and showed great anticipation in scoring the second try. Big on defence and made a good fist of what little ball came his way from Joubert and co in midfield. A great performance. 8/10
15) Stefan Terblanche. Looked far better, both on attack and defence, back in his old position, but fluffed his lines three times with clearance kicks that were charged down. Needs to improve on that aspect, but a good game nonetheless. 7/10

16) Kyle Cooper. Not long enough to be rated, but looked keen after spending a few months out injured.
17) Julian Redelinghuys. Not long enough to be rated, but the few scrums that took place with him on were just as solid as the ones before.
18) Jandre Marais. A solid debut from a young player who has been waiting for a shot and was not shy to get stuck in. 7/10
19) Francois Kleihans. An all-action player who looked the part in his few minutes on the field.
20) Cobus Reinach. Great to see him given a few minutes.
21) Jacques-Louis Potgieter. Not long enough to be rated.
22) Sbu Sithole. Not long enough to be rated, but great to see him make a long-awaited debut for the Sharks in 15-man rugby.

  • I would have given Mark Richards 8 out of 10. Although he did not get a lot of ball he played very well and made the backline look good despite our poor centre showing. Bosman and Joubert failed miserably on Saturday and I feel that their ratings here is very generous. What to do????

  • JLP not long enough to be rated but made enough mistakes in the short time on the field to be rated poorly. 1 chargedown and then a knock on 20 seconds later. 0/2 rating from me ❗

  • I wish we can give some youngsters time in the centers…with Joubert and Bosman rotating, Williams, Jordaan, Lineque…loved the game-had a braai with about 9Bulls supporters and lived to tell the tale…never drank as much in my life after a winning supporters performance.

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 3) : The way Bosman and Joubert played you may as well just play the youngsters. I mean they can’t be much worse than those two. I will give Joubert the benefit of the doubt for now being his first game for the sharks, but Bosman had an entire S15 and 1 CC game and he has not yet stepped up to the plate…

  • I was super impressed with Cronje, read the play really well and was huge on defence. These small guys from Michaelhouse (Lambie, Richards, Cronje) sure dont mind taking on the juggernauts.

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 3) : I would back the call for Heimar and Piet to be given a shot in one of the lesser games, but Jordaan has a lot of work to do… needs to get his game going for the under 19s before we start looking at senior caps.

  • Generally speaking, I am in agreement with the ratings, although my judgement may have suffered from margharita/scotch impairment…

Personally I would swop Skeate and Botes’ ratings; I thought Jacques did everything required of his position, and on at least two occassions, namely the surge upfield that ultimately resulted in Ludik’s try, and secondly in Marcell Coetzee’s try, he showed up in the right position, and succesfully executing vital linking passes.

With Skeate it’s not so much a case of him doing much wrong as it is of him just (for me) not having the composure one would expect of a player of his experience and seniority. Somehow, I’m always nervous when he’s involved…

Still too many Joosts from Ross Cronje to warrant a 8, but if he can eliminate it from his game the future looks bright for the young man.

Bosman, I’m afraid, has reached the shape up or ship out stage. We need to start looking at developing our options at 12, as I would not be confident at all of going into next year’s Super 15 with him as our premier inside centre. Given the quality and inexperience of his opposition, I would have thought that 5 might be a tad generous in an assessment of his performance. Given that he allowed Derick Kuun of all people to score a try against us, -345,872 is possible more in line with how I feel…

  • I think Richards did ok but is a bit light and gets bundled into touch easily- he would be very exposed in Super rugby but is fine for Currie Cup. Cronje’s pass is too slow and I hav a feeling we are going to get charged down a lot! Botes did seem the odd one out as Coetzee and Daniel combined well. I think Botes is just off the pace. Bosman had a shocker- i think JLP should start at 12 to put some pressure on Bosman to perform. Was impressed with the tight 5!

  • @Megatron (Comment 24) : I was actually also not sure that he missed many tackles; goes to show that he was largely invisible. Regardless of missed tackle stats though, the one thing you can bank your hard-earned money on is that if it’s a try-saving tackle, Bosman will miss it. I don’t like being so negative towards players, but Bosman has been afforded ample opportunities to prove me wrong.

  • @Megatron (Comment 26) : I agree with you. A great schoolboy player does not automatically translate into a ready-made star at senior level, particularly not in his first year out of school.

ALL of the youngsters need to spend a bit of time in the junior teams learning the ropes. Even Lambie had to spend a year with the juniors honing his skills and everyone concedes he’s a unique talent.

Let’s give Jordaan time to develop with Zeilinga (who also needs work) at under 19 level. Once they start excelling there, they can possibly be fast-tracked to under 21.

he can improve on his positioning, awareness – he sometimes loses concetration and watches, up his ball carrying stats…

otherwise he was born to do this, he was belligerent and hard even at EP u12, tougher than kids older than him.

  • actually i am gonna differ with some in general here

althoug i think Kolisi is a good player , i have found his play inconsistent

!st game in the Boks under 20 he was superb , 2nd match aweful , knock on after knock on etc

3rd match i watched him play the weekend past good again , , then again he is very young and can only improve ( hopefully )

Very few mention MArcel Coetzee, now man this kids got talent and is brilliant ,the amount of tackles he made against the BUlls was huge , yet he is hardly mentioned , AND HOW HE DID NOT MAKE THE WORLD CUP JNR BOK TEAM ?? leaves me in totally bewildered

  • @robdylan (Comment 57) : Yeah, I was just about to comment on that. Wierd. He started strong, but towards the end was being monstered in the scrums, and didnt exactly stick out in the loose. They have changed Eugene van Staden as being a member of the bubbling under team. To add to the calls on this site, I was disappointed with the centers. a) they got go forward ball from the forwards b) they got good service from Michalak c) they were the biggest offenders in missed tackles d) they were amongst the most “experienced” players on the field. Joubert can catch a break, as it was his first game in a new team, but he needs to remember there is no I in T.E.A.M. Meyer Bosman, well, what can I say… nothing much except as bad as he is please do not replace him with JLP. We need a real inside center. Rob might not like it, but Frans Steyn could fill a serious hole here should he shed a ton or two.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 55) : we’re looking at the under 21 pair of Heimar Williams (12) and Piet Lindeque (13), I would think… although we could probably say that JLP must be in line as an option at 12 too. Jerome Pretorius (13) was a regular for the Vodacom Cup team, but he wasn’t offered a contract extension and I doubt they’ll use him. Dwayne Jenner (12) might have come into the picture had he not opted to move to Border. I see he started for them in their big loss against Boland this past weekend.

  • @robdylan (Comment 65) : I would say give Heimar a run sooner rather than later. We need a 12. Bosman despite a slightly improved showing towards the end of the super 15 doesnt appear to be it, and it will build depth anyway. Unless Bosman does an Ndungane (I seem to remember Odwa having a very forgettable first season at the Sharks) we need to build capacity at 12.

  • @robdylan (Comment 67) : Agreed, he did show some improvement and so deserves a few more chances to cement his place, but regardless of that, its still worrying when the first choice player isn’t playing that well and there are no obvious choices behind him. Still need to find quality backup or better yet, someone to pressure Bosman for the 12 jersey.

  • I just HAVE to share – my two daughters are TOTALLY IN LOVE with Sharkie! My new SR mag was dissected and all pictures of Sharkie was cut out and put on posters with “Go Sharks”. The video was watched over and over and over this weekend!

And I am an extremely proud mother – I asked my oldest randomly who players was – I had to print out the players for her and she went to her room – so I found her stydying to remember the players names with the pictures! Mom’s girl!! πŸ˜€

  • @robdylan (Comment 67) : @Pablo Dinero (Comment 68) : I agree that Meyer Bosman improved towards the end of Super Rugby, but it concerns me that a) it took him that long to find his feet in Super Rugby, b) that he could regress so quickly and revert to his bad defensive habits, and c) that we have not yet established who his understudy is, both with the eye on keeping a healthy amount of pressure on him to perform, and also to allow for rotation in the Super 15, where depth and player management is going to be crucial to success.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : I agree – there is a huge step up from schoolboy/Craven Week level to the U19 CC and then another big step to the U21’s. At each stage of this devopment process there is natural attrition and I would be surprised if more than 20% make it through to Vodacom Cup and then Currie Cup and Super rugby. Many of those who fall off were outstanding schoolboy players.
I assume from the hype that he has talent and potential but I have no idea whether Jordaan will develop or not and will reserve judgement until I have seen him stand out at U19 level and do the same at U21.

Look at the ratings, Joubert it one point behind Skeate so either Joubert got gifted a couple of points or Skeate was docked a point. They are definitely not 1 point apart!

  • Skeate is one of those players who the Sharks bought from overseas and I had hopes for. He didn’t live up to those hopes so I became dissappointed but I have always hoped that he would snap out of it and perform well. Now that he is showing signs of some good form I am getting excited again. Guess that is why I think he deserves an 8.

Meyer Bosman is another aquired player whom I had high hopes for but he has failed to perform, especially on the defence front.

  • I thought Freddy was so sharp on Saturday and deserved his 9/10 rating. I was also really pleased about Marcell’s performance and the good decisions that Cronje made. Richards looked totally comfortable in the setup. I hope JLP now gets a shot at 12, just to see if he can offer something better.

There was also a move down the right hand flank. Marius had Richards coming up on his outside but he was coming from deep and a bit far behind the gainline and was covered. Marius held instead of passing. I felt this was the right decision under the circumstances. I was happy with what we got out of Joubert and if he stays fit, I think he’ll really do wonders to promote a more flowing attacking brand of rugby.
