Western Province’s already meagre flyhalf stocks look to have been further depleted, with Gary van Aswegen likely to miss out this weekend. The young pivot, already a stand-in himself after injury has cut a swathe through the ranks, has picked up his second knee injury of the year, although reports differ as to the prognosis.
Stephen Nell, writing for Sports24 reports that the injury doesn’t look too serious, while the boys from Keo claim that he’s torn medial ligaments and will be sidelined for two months. Either way, it appears as though Demetri Catrakilis of Ikeys fame will make his first Currie Cup start against the Leopards on Saturday.
Province have already lost Peter Grant to Japan and both Lionel Cronje and Curt Coleman to injury.

If you are a number 10 in the Cape… GET OUT NOW!!! š
I am honestly actually starting to feel sorry for Province though, they really have the worst of luck (though that doesn’t change the fact that they are chokers
).
Or report at Newlands for your Nr 10 slot…limited time only T’s and C’s apply…
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 1) : š š
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 1) : It’s getting hectic. My club’s 1st team FH got injured 2weeks ago, and the 3rd team FH almost passed out on the field : he just had like a blank stare on his face, must have been bloodsugar or something.
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 2) : or jokers š
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 2) :
feel sorry for my dream team man š
i saw on facebook they say 8 weeks …
ja – Sport24 seems to now have confirmed the Keo progno… he’s out for 6-8 weeks.
eish, gary played well on saturday
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) : he wasn’t shit, hey?
If you have aspirations to be a Bok front rower, play for the SHARKS.
If you have aspirations to be a Bok loose forward, play for the CHEETAHS.
If you have aspirations to be a Bok lock or flyhalf, play for the BULLS.
If you have aspirations to be a Bok center, play for the STORMERS.
If you have aspirations to be a Bok fullback, play OVERSEAS.
If you have aspirations to be a Bok…… supporter then play for the LIONS.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) : who’s up next for you okes? After the waste-of-time trip to Potch, I mean
geezlaaikit… Here’s hoping Catrikilis is ready. Otherwise its Dollie šæ
Anyone know when Lionel Cronje, Sam Lane or Kurt Coleman are due back?
@robdylan (Comment 10) : Not at all, was nice seeing a ten step and do a few creative things for once.He was walking on Saturday after the game so Coetzee thought it wasnt going to be serious.The specialist also thought it was a scar tissue issue.
@molly (Comment 13) : Coleman 2 weeks, Cronje September
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 11) : I’ve edited that, lest it fall foul of our rules
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 15) : 2 weeks? That’s not so bad. Coleman is also handy
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 15) : so… Catrikilis with Dollie as backup? Or maybe Dewaldt?
@robdylan (Comment 16) : I figured I overstepped the boundaries… had to try my luck though. š
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 19) : umm, no you didn’t… take this as the only warning, please.
(sorry – I have no sense of humour about that)
@molly (Comment 18) : I think you okes should give Dollie a go… I mean, how bad can the guy actually be?
@robdylan (Comment 21) : yeah, I’m sure he’s not that bad, but also confident that the comment backlash will be up there with Earl Rose’s return to the stripes. And that was not fun.
Oh darn. He is in my fantasy league team.
man this causes a dream team predicament … dont want to transfer in a guy thats only going to play for two weeks and then get dropped
Oh Goody he was never in my FL plans. š
@KSA Shark Ā© (Comment 25) : It was a toss up between him and Francis – stupid me for going for the most injury prone position in WP.
I wish I had Francis… although Super Sarel is gonna score me BIG points when he gets back
in the name of coastal solidarity let’s lend them Meyer Bosman or JLP or both š
Let’s hope that Duvenhage is cleared – he’s their best flyhalf anyway. I’m sure they can find a decent 9 – Schreuder does not look too bad.
@molly (Comment 22) : yip – nobody seem to be mentioning Earl – is he no longer with you guys.
@RobDylan we have that small matter of the Bulls to take care of after the Potch trip
@rekinek (Comment 28) : Great idee š
@rekinek (Comment 30) : no he plays for Griquas
@Franshark (Comment 33) : lucky Province
@Franshark (Comment 32) : š i only have those – now you should vote for me to become Sharks selector
@rekinek (Comment 35) : sorry anybody asking about Earl should rather not apply for selector job š
@Franshark (Comment 36) : i was just making sure that he is disposed of š
@rekinek (Comment 37) : he was on the bench for Dumond, that’s how highly rated he is š
@molly:
Dumond played quite well. He kicked his goals and defended well.
@wpw (Comment 39) : yes he did indeed.
@rekinek (Comment 28) : not JLP… he’s the sort of bastard that will pull out a blinder performance in a semi against us, just to be spiteful
@wpw (Comment 39) : @molly (Comment 40) : Monty has never been a bad player. All flyhalves just need a bit of continuity and a coach who backs them – Monty never had either of those at the Sharks.
Watch him turn out to be one of the top points scorers this season.
my idea is to send Guy Cronje to Province on loan
@robdylan (Comment 42) : I’ve been a fan off Dumond for as long as I’ve seen him play, and agree, he was buggered around and used as a spare wheel with no descend run to show his worth.. Hope the best for him at Grieks
What a season this has turned out to be for Demetri. I wonder what he would have said if someone had told him he’d be starting a Currie Cup match back in March. He probably would have laughed or thought the person was insane. š
@robdylan (Comment 43) : If I was to head hunt someone I’d inquire about the form of George Whitehead and/or Franna du Toit. Not much experience but a lot of potential.
@robdylan (Comment 43) : that’s an idea, just stipulate that he’s not aloud to play against the sharks…
Oh my gosh. What is happening here? People starting to rate Monty Dumond? Seriously?
@Ben (Comment 48) : not people ME?
I don’t rate Monty at all. Just in case anyone was wondering.
@Franshark (Comment 49) : Are you not a person???
@Ben (Comment 50) : its obvious, and @Ben (Comment 51) : still checking š
@robdylan (Comment 8) : Is that the final answer or do you wanna phone a friend?
@lostfish (Comment 26) :
lol yea im with you mate no worries ….
round 1 is over and im thinking of making me first transfer …
why does this keep on happening to them ?
I really dont see the flyhalf problem? Ok yes they have a few injuries which isnt ideal. But how many premier league clubs are there in the Western Cape? Are the Hammies and Maties flyhalves that bad? and the u21s? Its not an ideal situation but a great chance for a club player to put his hand up!
@robdylan (Comment 42) : Monty had a bladdy good game on Saturday, he controlled play for the kwasse and turned the WP backs all afternoon.
@beet (Comment 45) : I wish he was still a Bay Boykie.Up the Bay
seems Jaco Taute will also be out for 3 weeks …
@Zibbie (Comment 58) : DAMN he IS in my FL squad. š
@KSA Shark Ā© (Comment 59) : @Zibbie (Comment 58) : I have both Taute and van Aswegen! š
@KSA Shark Ā© (Comment 59) : @Pokkel (Comment 60) :
same here … BUT !! it gets WORSE
“Meanwhile, the Cheetahs Bulletin states that a decision about the availability of flyhalf Sias Ebersohn will be taken on Wednesday. Ebersohn injured his ankle early in the match against the Leopards and left the field as a precautionary measure.”
http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/CurrieCup/Skipper-calls-it-a-day-at-FS-20110718
@Zibbie (Comment 61) : @Pokkel (Comment 60) : @KSA Shark Ā© (Comment 59) :
Same here I’m not 100% sure how this FL game works but i have all the above 3 players as well …. advice ā š
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 62) :
its tricky … van aswegen is out for 8 weeks .. but coleman or cronje will be back in 2 ..
taute should be back in 3 weeks ..
Ebersohn might or might not be back soon …
SO ….
do we take the risk of replacing the players that might be back soon and waste a transfer …
OR take a hit in points and wait for them to come back and save your transfer ….
@Zibbie (Comment 63) :
….decisions, decisions,
…. depends who is the WP Number 1 when all are fit ā Who’s that ā
Well done on the first round win!
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 64) : geez dude, 3 cups, nice one. Sorry its the first time I’ve noticed, I feel inferior š
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 64) :
would propably be van aswegen when all fit . but his missing half the cup … lol
thanx man š but fantasy league is also not won in the first round hehe š
the person that handles the injuries best should come out on top me thinks …
i am 10 in FL. Maybe after 3 years I finally learnt how to play.
Beware the 3 cup holder the charge is on š
@molly (Comment 65) : @rekinek (Comment 67) :
Sorry i am no longer a member of the two cup club …..it was a blast while it lasted! š š š
@Zibbie (Comment 66) :
Why did Coleman play ahead of him in the Super 15 then or was he injured ā
Beware giving me this information could cost you the competition. š
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 69) :
i think he was injured …
nah im telling you what the options are š
not mentioning what option im taking š
and i might be misleading you as well .. MWHAHAHAHAHAH i mean …. i would never do a thing liek that š
@Zibbie (Comment 70) :
hhehehehehe…… Just watch me looming from 63rd this week.
I know exactly what I’m going to do š
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 69) :
Hey HH,
The pecking order is as follows: š
1 – Grant (off to Japan)
2 – Van Aswegan (injured this past week)
3 – Lionel Cronje (injured)
4 – Sam Lane (injured)
5 – Kurt Coleman (injured – back in 2 weeks)
6 – Dmitri Catrikilis (available)
or do i ! šÆ
@wpw (Comment 72) :
You know who your friends are?
What about the option of playing that halfback of your as the flyhalf?
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 62) : It’s simple really, the object of the game is to have a squad of 30 players. From that squad you have to select 15 starters each week and the other 15 need to be injured for them to score any points in your squad.
@molly (Comment 65) : š
@KSA Shark Ā© (Comment 75) :
šÆ
@wpw (Comment 72) : and Dollie at 7… or maybe above, we’ll apparently find out today.
@Hertford Highlander (Comment 74) :
Duvenage?? He has been injured since the SR semi final. š
I think he’ll be back this weekend.
Injuries this early really is a biatch š
@molly (Comment 78) :
I thought it best I DON’T add Elgar Watts to that list.
I wonder if we’ll ever select him going forward. I mean surely he’s better than both Dollie and Earl!! šÆ
@wpw (Comment 81) : I was about to remind you how you left Rose off your list too š
I think its safe to say our management isn’t going to give Elgar a chance.
@molly (Comment 82) :
issint Earl with the griques ?
@Zibbie (Comment 83) : he is indeed
@Zibbie (Comment 83) : yup, but he could still be on the list, like Grant is.
