Stormers prop CJ van der Linde looks set to sign a deal with the Lions that could see him link up with the Joburg side for the remainder of the Currie Cup.

According to reports, the second-most-capped Bok prop ever, who is on bench duty against the Australians this weekend, has been released from his contractual commitments in Cape Town and may join the Lions with effect from 1 August. Van der Linde has been something of a nomad of late, playing for the Cheetahs and then the Stormers after returning from Leinster.

Should the Lions move come off, it would be the third local side van der Linde has been contracted to in just over a year.

The prop’s impact on this season’s Super Rugby campaign for the Stormers was limited, with a troublesome groin injury keeping him off the field for the bulk of the season. Despite his experience, he was also seldom able to secure a starting spot ahead of the likes of Brok Harris and Wicus Blaauw.

With the Lions reportedly facing bankruptcy, it’s also interesting to speculate as to how they can afford to pay the wages of a 70-cap veteran like van der Linde.

  • I dont like this part of the article: ‘Stormers prop CJ van der Linde’ 🙄

  • i think if he stays fit this might be a good thing for the lions …

but if i had to believe everything i read on the net Beast and John Smith would be playing for the Lions right now and the world would already come to an end ….

Will ultimately believe it when i see it …

  • @Zibbie (Comment 2) : he might not be a terrible signing for you guys… at least he has experience.

My problem with CJ, though, is that he’s never struck me as a leader, which is what you guys need right now. He has all the caps, but none of the gravitas

  • While at the Stormers we never really got to see if he got rid of the discipline issues he had before leaving to go overseas.

It will be interesting to see if he has or not.

  • The Lions badly need a prop, could be a really good signing. Why would WP release him from his contract though?

  • “…the second-most-capped Bok prop ever…” Proof positive that being of sound mind and judgement is NOT a requirement for Bok selectors…
