Michalak concern for Sharks

Sharks team doctor Ewoudt van der Linde told journalists on Saturday morning that star flyhalf Fred Michalak – one of the form players of the Currie Cup so far – may be in doubt for Saturday’s game against the Cheetahs.

The Frenchman pulled up lame with around five minutes still to play in Nelspruit on Friday evening and the hamstring strain he suffered has him rated at no better than 50-50 for this weekend, according to van der Linde. Other players carrying bumps include Marcell Coetzee (broken nose) and Marius Joubert (ankle strain).

The Sharks will be thanking their lucky stars that they have the experience of Jacques-Louis Potgieter to call on, should Michalak not be fit for the must-win home game against the Cheetahs and the former Bulls and Cheetahs pivot will relish the opportunity to come up against so many former team-mates. Should Joubert also be forced to sit out, the coaches would probably move Stefan Terblanche back into midfield, with Louis Ludik taking over at fullback and Sbura Sithole earning a first start on the wing.

According to van der Linde, though, both Coetzee and Joubert are expected to be fit for this weekend.

  • I saw that he was rubbing his leg after that kick and told Sam it looks like a hammy, let’s just hope it’s not too bad. But they must not take any chances another strain and this injurie can get worse and there’s still a long road ahead in the CC.
