It’s all happening over on JustRugby.net, where round 2 of the Currie Cup Fantasy League saw last week’s leader, Zibbie, drop all the way down to fourth on the overall standings.
A strong round from the hideously-named “Maak die Bulle Almal Bokke” (coupled, no doubt, with a win by his beloved team) saw the 50-point MVP bonus head the way of Pretortia this week, along with top spot on the log.
Top of the pops in terms of players in round 2 was Lions scrummie Jano Vermaak, with the hat trick of tries he picked up in the first half against Griquas netting him a healthy score of 42 points for the round. The ever dependable Fred Michalak came in second, with 30 points including the extras for the match-altering kick that saw him grab four log points with a good conversion. Flyhalves, especially those who did lots of kicking, were good value this week, with Francois Brummer and Demetri Catrakilis also making the top 5. Lionel Mapoe, who scored twice for the Lions, completed the top five this week.
Michalak narrowly holds top spot in terms of overall score over two rounds, with Vermaak now hot on his heels. One feels, though, that unless the Lions man keeps scoring the tries, he’ll struggle to stay the course amongst the top scorers as the competition progresses. Burton Francis, Keegan Daniel, Mapoe and (surprisingly) Jacobie Adriaanse are the other players featuring strongly after two rounds.
In addition to the players we reported injured last week (Renaldo Bothma, Rocco Jansen, Gary van Aswegen, Jaco Pretorius and Skipper Badenhorst, who has retired) there are a few more concerns to take into account this week.
– Michalak is rated as 50-50 for this weekend following a grade 1 hamstring strain. He’s unlikely to be out for long, even if he does miss this weekend.
– Cheetahs hooker PW van Vuuren is also doubtful for this weekend.
– Lions skipper Doppies le Grange may be out for a week or two
– Jaco Taute is still battling for fitness as well
Let us know if there are any other players you know of that are in doubt – or ruled out – for this round and beyond.

What is the status of Sarel’s injury?
Ryno Benjamin? Francois Brummer?
Ryno bejamine also didnt play last weekend . not sure if he is back though ?
Rob your above heading reads Fantast.
Sharks’ lack of bonus point saw me dropping like 23 positions 😐
@Salmonoid (Comment 4) : He couldn’t decide between Fantasy and Fantastic, so he went somewhere in between 😆
@rekinek (Comment 5) : Me too, well not 23 but more like about 10 🙁
@Salmonoid (Comment 4) : thanks… blame it on the flu
Is Marcel Van Der Merwe not injured? He was helped off the field and it looked like he was limping.
Ryno Benjamin was a late withdrawal on the weekend but he should be fit for this weekend’s game.
@war1 (Comment 10) :
thanx that sounds good !! now we hope that fred and Taute gets a start !!! heheh
I backed the griekwas to win so removed all lions players, had a team filled with cheetahs and sharks…. Droped a full 25 places to an all time low… 😯 😳
@Franshark (Comment 12) : can’t even say how low 🙁
Yeah my FL is not looking so good.
Burden cost me.
@Original Pierre (Comment 14) : yup… the uncharacteristic Burden gaffe cost me plenty as well.
The boy hasn’t scored yet in two outings… counts as a dreadful Currie Cup by his standards!
@Franshark (Comment 12) : all time low? It’s only the second round 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 15) : Same here 🙁
Its to my understanding that Doppies and Taute will miss the game wit the Leopards
What is the story with Fudge Mabeta why has he been listed to play in the last two round and yet has not scored a point ❓ 😕
Fudge definitely did play, but I think their might be 2 Mabetas in the players list.
You can put Sarel up as injured, three more weeks according to keo
