Sharksworld can confirm that star loose forward Marcell Coetzee today committed his future to the Sharks for the next two years.

Coetzee’s father confirmed earlier today that the 20-year-old former Port Natal boy, who has impressed in both Super Rugby and the Currie Cup this year, despite his youth, has put pen to paper on a new Sharks deal.

We’d been led to believe that a number of other unions, most notably the Bulls, were hot on the heels of Coetzee. We’re obviously thrilled that he’s decided to stay true to his roots and we’re sure that we can look forward to many more great performances in black and white. Good to have you with us, Marcell!

  • it would have SUCKED to lose this kid. I heard a horrible rumour about two weeks ago that he’d already signed with the Bulls.

  • So we didn’t net a big fish as much as not throwing one back that was already in the net? Good catch all the same! 😎

  • Another quality flanker for the Sharks! We should seriously start considering turning some of them into centres.

  • @Ice (Comment 9) : I know it was just a bit of useless information again in a way but coincidently Marcel made his 1st debut against Affies on Saturday. I think he’s in line to be one of those rare cases where a kid plays 4 years of 1st team.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 13) : Craven Week just proved it again. Some of the unluckiest guys to miss out on SA schools selection were looseforwards coz of the quality depth in the possie.

  • Fantastic news, Hanneke Meyer is building for the next era of Blue Bull domination wich he hopes will kick in by 2013 and but for the loyalty Marcell showed towards his Sharks coaches,he was on his way to the team he supported as a boy.

  • @basson (Comment 17) : I think the fact that the Sharks coaches (esp Plum) so openly support Marcell and are backing that talk up with actual gametime, speaks volumes.

I thought of Robbie Kempson but that was ages ago.

  • The kid is a talent, I am sure the contract stipulates first rights for extension / renewal… I like him; has strength, speed and can play ball, more than a one dimensional crasher… Deysel and Alberts have serious serious competition in this kid…

  • Deysel, Alberts, Coetzee… what next? The Sharks are rolling out the monsters of rugby.

I reckon they should clone a mixture of Daniel, Kanko, Alberts, Coetzee and Deysel – the best looseforward ever! It will be over 2m tall and weigh over 120kg with the ability to do the 100m sprint in 10 seconds…. 😯 wishful thinking! 🙂

  • The Bulls already have 2 really good up and coming players in Marnus Schoeman and Arno Botha, so I guess it’s the desire to recruit the very best that’s now motivated them to approach Marcell.

To me between Kolisi, Hartzenberg, Carr and Pieter Louw, Province are overstocked. So Cape Town looks more like a buyers market than Durban right now.

  • @beet (Comment 28) : With Flo leaving, Province have a looseforward spot up for grabs and one of those guys should make it his own. There also needs to be depth especially for a long tournament like Super rugby. I reckon Province/The Stormers will need all of those guys.

  • @war1 (Comment 29) : Ja but if Schalk stays and Duane with talented Nick Koster, a certainty to be in the mix, that’s 3 slots taken. Then there’s Wimpie, Kitshoff, Fenton-Wells and the oppo to use Elstadt there if necessary.

Carr has time on his side and Kolisi is my pick of the lot but they are both smallish guys as is Louw while Hartzenberg is a big unit. I don’t know. I just think there’s business to be done there if the right offer in on the table.

  • @beet (Comment 30) : Yeah, but do the Bulls really need any of those guys? My take is that Kolisi will take the 7 jersey next season. Another option could be moving Vermeulen to blindside and putting Koster at 8. The other guys are still young and will be good players for their wider squad while playing VC. It’s no use the Bulls buy a loosie who is just going to play VC for them. They also have Okkie Kruger and CJ Stander pushing for a place in their Super rugby team. Danie Rossouw definitely will definitely leave a gap upfront but I believe it’s one the Bulls can fill internally.

  • @war1 (Comment 31) : That’s true too – do the Bulls really need to recruit a loosefwd. Probably not if you look at what they already have. I was just following on from the failed attempt to sign Marcell and considering a replacement signing of a similar age that would add value to their setup. For reasons over and above rugby talent, I IDed the 4 mentioned WP youngsters.

I watched Wimpie closely during the WP vs Griquas job and wasn’t impressed.
It seems he was dropped for the very next game against the Leopards.
Wrt Hartzenberg, I believe he. Hasn’t played well this season and that is why he wasn’t considered for the SR semi final vs the Crusaders. I still rate him though.
