News broke yesterday that 23 players that have been included in the Tri Nations away leg and in the preliminary Springbok World Cup squad, have been released to their respective unions and can expect to get some game time in the Currie Cup this weekend.

The Bulls got 8 players, The Sharks 7, The Cheetahs 4, The Lions 1 and foreign clubs rounded up other 3. You will notice that Western Province have been hardest hit by this with a double blow, firstly not receiving any players and secondly, they face the Cheetahs who has 4 extra Boks at their disposal. Heinrich Brüssow will only get 20 or so minutes, but Adriaan Strauss will bolster the front row along with Coenie Oosthuizen, and Ashley Johnson will add some dynamite to the loose trio.

Now I have seen a few comments flying around about how and why certain players have been ‘dropped’ when they have performed so well in Australia and New Zealand. I stress again that all these players are still in the running to play in the home leg of the Tri Nations, as well as being in line for the Final World Cup squad.

Nobody can explain the thinking behind the release of certain players and the non-release of other, except maybe our dear friend Mr. de Villiers, but we can only assume that these players will be given the opportunity to get some game time, especially those that have not had the chance in the Tri Nations so far. Those that have played will almost certainly be monitored as and when they take the field, to further assess their ability and hopefully they will either continue in their good form or gain some much needed form, depending on who you have in mind.

We can only assume that those players that have not been released still have niggling injuries or are to be kept in cotton wool so that no serious injuries rule them out of the World Cup. Things will become a lot clearer once the squad for the home leg of the Tri Nations is announced later this week.
