Fresh du Plessis exit rumours surface

The Twitterverse is again abuzz this morning, with the oft-reliable Tank Lanning getting silly season under way by announcing that Bok front row duo, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, will be leaving the Sharks at the end of the Currie Cup. The tweet in question is, infuriatingly, devoid of any further details, such as the alleged destination of the pair, or the source of this information.

We’d urge our readers to take this one with a pinch of salt – if not dismiss it outright, at least until some sort of concrete information surfaces. Does concrete ever really surface, come to think of it? That’s starting to look like one seriously mixed metaphor, but I digress. The reality is, though, that Bismarck and Jannie as a package deal represents a hugely attractive proposition and it really isn’t any surprise that the pair have options other than staying put at the Sharks. It’s hardly a secret that their contracts come up for renewal at the end of the year, so speculation is inevitable.

There have been rumours doing the rounds for ages, with virtually every side in Australia and France linked with one or both of the brothers at some stage over the last year or two. The reality, though, is that their love of the farm they own together in Bethlehem is such that they are very unlikely to move anywhere that isn’t within easy commuting distance of it. If big-money offers are coming in from Europe, then it’s kind of inevitable that the brothers, together with Gerrie Swart, would be weighing them up – probably with a view to getting the Sharks to up the ante themselves. My view, though, is that after much huffing and puffing, the pair will stay in Durban for at least two more years, allowing them to still earn some nice dosh while being within spitting distance of their farm.

With both sure to be regular starters for the Sprinboks from 2012 onwards – and a new national coach to take the helm, with an as-yet unknown stance on foreign-based players – that must surely be another factor that would seriously dissuade the brothers from looking at an overseas move right now.

  • just wouldn’t make sense for them to leave now with john out of the picture. From what i’ve heard they seem to be loving life in durbs as well. Logic says its just a rumour, let’s hope so…

  • I don’t know Rob: this is a rumour that I can actually credit. Agree that we shouldn’t get all excited yet, but I will not be stunned if this comes to pass.

  • so it seems THIS is the story…

Devoid of anything even remotely factual… what’s more, there’s nothing on the Beeld website about it either.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 2) : well, there’s always a silver lining.

Herbst is a young man who is going to go far and could even become a Bok next year. Him and van Staden can cover 3 and in Burden and Cooper we have able deputies for Bismarck. Not saying that the DuP brothers aren’t wonderful assets in our team, but if they do decide to chase greener pastures, we’ll be ok.

    With you on that.

The Bros are approaching 30, and after a 2nd WC, may decide to experience a bit of forrin life for a bit.

I hope they stay, of course. Bismark is reaching his true potential now.

  • It would be a pity if we lose them, but as mentioned it won’t be a train smash. We have players that are hungry to cement their spot in the team. And with Plum’s outlook on rather sticking with the younger players I feel we are building towards a very rosy future.

But in saying that, I still hope the brothers stay in Durban.

  • If they do leave doubt they will go to another franchise in SA. Probably head off to Europe where they will earn more. Would be a pity.

Also thinking of the Boks next year. Who says that Bissie will start at hooker? My feeling it will be Chili cause I think Chili will be our next Bok captain. Well think so cause we have been hearing that for a long time too. So maybe the Bissie and Jannie have thought about that too. Does Bissie want to still sit on the bench for the Boks? Probably not. So if they do leave for overseas I won’t be too surprise. But hope they stay at the Sharks.

This is the only paragraph i could find remotely suggesting it – So – because their contracts are up, they just take it that they will pack up and go??

  • @klempie (Comment 28) : Div’s big mistake is that he placed too much faith in the Rustenburg 21 (aka the 2007 boks) over the years and has not blooded enough youngsters in the last 4 years. What was exposed on tour is that our youngsters and fringe players are not mentally ready for the step up to international rugby. I believe that their were good players on that tour – but it’s a mental thing and our players fell short.

  • Jannie is not a loss, I rate Herbst anyway. Problem with Jannie is that he has the odd brain explosion and do silly things at critical times.
    No loss there.

Bissie is a different story totally, we can not lose him as we keep on losing our physical players like Mostert and Sykes. We need these guys in our engine room!!!!
I know the problem is that they come as a package!

Funny how a lot of these rumors start getting substance very quick, i.e. Sadie. Nobody thought he would go and then…..
Hope Bissie stays, in fact I will pray 2nite!!

Now then did the Bulls buy Vermaak because Hougaard is on his way to Province?
Don’t think Vermaak would have moved if he knew he is second choice! Now then the plot thickens.

Who do we have lined up now?
