Plum sticks to his guns

Sharks coach John Plumtree has decided to stick to his young guns and named a virtually unchanged team to face Griquas in Kimberley this Friday night. After a lot of media hype and quotes that he will keep faith in his youngsters, this has come through with none of the returning 7 players in the starting line-up, and only 3 of them on the bench.

Ross Skeate has been ruled out of contention with a groin injury, with the impressive Jan Andre Marais starting his first game for the Sharks. The backline is unchanged and the halfbacks of Cronje and Michalak will continue to grow as a combination.

The changes come in on the bench, where Cobus Reinach, Francois Kleinhans and JL Potgieter fall away to make space for returnees Charl McLeod, Ryan Kankowski and Pat Lambie. Peet Marais, Jan Andre’[s younger brother, is moved from the U21 team to the bench to cover the second row.

Adi Jacobs, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane and Alistair Hargreaves are given the weekend off, and barring selection from the Springbok group, will come back into selection contention for the game against Western Province at Newlands.

The Sharks: 1. Dale Chadwick, 2. Craig Burden, 3. Wiehahn Herbst, 4. Anton Bresler, 5. Jan Andre Marais, 6. Jacques Botes, 7. Marcell Coetzee, 8. Keegan Daniel (Capt), 9. Ross Cronje, 10. Fred Michalak, 11. Sibusiso Sithole, 12. Meyer Bosman, 13. Stefan Terblanche, 14. Mark Richards, 15. Louis Ludik.

Reserves: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Eugene van Staden, 18. Peet Marais, 19. Ryan Kankowski, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Patrick Lambie, 22. Marius Joubert.

  • Well done to both Marais brothers. They are turning out to be the real deal.

Peet has been in good form for the u21 team and it will be good to see how he handles CC

  • @Megatron (Comment 6) : I spoke to Siyabonga Tom, the Glenwood and 2011 SA Schools wing on Saturday evening. He tells me that he’s also from the PE area along with schoolmate Legend Marwana, our Craven Week utility back. So 4 of our KZN u18 guys are out of PE.

  • I like that they are rested but surely would use some of them(if not all) in the upcoming games…

  • I’m really pleased at Plum’s backing of- and enthusiasm for the younger players. Still dreadfully concerned about our centre situation for next year’s Super 15 though.

  • Plum has surprised me! That doesn’t happen very often . I share everyone’s sentiments on the midfield. Would have liked to see Marius Joubert or Adi given a starting spot.

  • @beet (Comment 8) : rugby is in our genes mate, from George to Kokstad you find skew rugby poles in the middle of a grazing camp, the same with cricket. Now the next step is to equip schools like Ithembelihle to a point where the likes Tom, Payi & Kolisi don’t have to get ‘bursaries’ to Grey PE or Glenwood to pursue their chosen sport.

  • Wish Adi was available . . .

I realise this might not be the right stage for experimentation but Sithole at 13 with Mvovo outside him could be a devastating attack. . .

  • I feel Adi haven`t played enough rugby this year. What he needs is a good run not rest.
If he`s good enough to face the All Black surely he`s good enough to play against the Kwasse?
