With 7 back, who will play?

I’m quite interested in seeing what Plumtree does this weekend. With 7 returning Bok players the Sharks coach has quite a bit to think about before selecting his final team for this weekends game against the Griquas, not knowing just how long some or any of these players will be available to him. I don’t think it is a bad situation to be in. It’s  certainly better than the situation Western Province finds them self in, being the only team not getting a single player released to them. Or is it?

Will selecting all 7 of these players into a team that has worked to three consecutive victories, two of them against bigger unions, to find themselves second on the log after 3 weeks of an interesting competition, just be a disruption? Maybe Plumtree should just stick with the players that has done the job for him so far and leave all 7 these returning players on the bench. Maybe Western Province are more fortunate than we think they are. Maybe bringing back as many of these players as possible will be too much of a temptation and players that has performed so well over these past few weeks will come back with their confidence low, having been dropped at the first chance there was. Maybe the 7 returning players will cause enough of a disruption to concede a defeat this weekend and then maybe even the weekend after that, because of the drop in confidence. Maybe getting back 7 of your best players is not a good thing, but then again could it really be that bad to have a few options. If you’re a good coach you should be grinning from ear to ear.

Plumtree knows his players. I think he has a good idea of which group of players he’ll have to rely on to lift the trophy for him at the end of the day and I have a feeling he knows how to get the best out of these players. I don’t even think he should worry about it too much this weekend, the youngsters he has brought in has more than proved themselves worthy of retaining the trophy and most of the returning experienced players haven’t played that much and will probably have a point to proof. I doubt any of them will let us down or that it would have any negative effect on the team if they come straight back into the starting line-up. In fact I would love to see a few of these guys in action again, especially the ones that didn’t get that much game time with the Boks, as these are the players that may be available for a little longer or even permanently when the Bok team is announced again. If Plumtree could find a good mix of youth and experience I would be very pleased and with so many options available to him, I’d expect no less.

The question is, what will the team look like this week? The one player I’d like to see get a starting spot is Adi Jacobs. He hasn’t played a lot lately, but looked quite good when he got a chance for the Boks and would probably love to get some game time. Our midfield hasn’t looked that great in any way, maybe it would be best to give them more time to gel, but for me it would be to tempting to start Adi for this one and sort out the midfield problems right away. It’s a little harder with the back three, since we have two returning players and a couple of guys that has really performed well in these positions. It’s very tempting to say that this is where I wouldn’t touch the team from last week. Ludik, Richards and Sithole had a great game last week, but do you just leave guys like Mvovo and Ndugane out?

I’d love to see Lambie and McLeod start this game (just because they combine so well and McLeod will likely be back for good), which would mean we would have to make room for Fred or leave our most influencial player of this Currie Cup on the bench. For this reason I would consider using Fred and Lambie as a 10/12 combo. I feel it would work, even though it sounds just as crazy as I thought it would when I read it back! And even though it does sound a little crazy, my thinking behind it is sound. At some point we will have both Lambie and Fred available too us, I would be the type of coach too settle that issue as soon as I possibly could and I think this weekend would be a good start.

15.Terblanche 14. Richards 13. Jacobs 12. Fred/Lambie 11. Ludik 10. Lambie/Fred 9. McLeod 8. Keegan (c) 7. Coetzee 6. Botes 5. Marais 4. Bresler 3. Herbst 2. Burden 1. Chadwick

Reserves: Cooper, Van Staden, Hargreaves, Kankowski, Hofman, Bosman, Sithole.

But it seems based on one of Rob’s latest articles that Plumtree may just back the team from last weekend and maybe that would be the best thing to do?

  • Wishful thinking…Stubborn Plum will just do the opposite… 😐

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : Then Cronje on the bench. Which is good, because I wanted him to get another oppertunity.

  • I honestly would give Lambie the week off..

He is a great talent, but disruption in key areas is not good ahead of a tough away game, only to lose Lambie ahead of the Newlands match, and we need to make changes in key positions again.

That said, Lambie at 12 could work, but with Bosman improving the way he did, that would also be a little unfair.

  • @Charlie (Comment 1) : I don’t know, maybe it’s a good thing if Plumtree sticks with his starting 15. We always see coaches throwing out the non-boks, only for the boks to mess things up.

I was thinking more in line with selecting a side not just for this CC, but also looking to the future.

I was also considering which of these guys may return full time later on.

  • @Letgo (Comment 5) : I agree…a certain semi-finals against the Cheetahs springs to mind…Boks just re-joined the team, Plum pushed them in the team and we seriously came second…IMO a loss of continuety cost us that semi..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 8) : Bosman improving…then suddenly he get’s back to square one when he needs to produce a top notch performance… 😉

  • @Charlie (Comment 9) :

I hear what you are saying..

But the guy must have put in some time working on certain aspects of his game, and its only fair to keep him there if you know that Lambie is going to be back with the Boks from next week.

Why drop him, kill his confidence, and then he WILL be back to the old Bosman..

  • I’d rest a few that played a lot of SR if necessary, but if I had ST, MJ and MB in my team and young exiting players pushing for bok colors, PL, LM and ON and don’t use them rather….. then there’s something seriously wrong with me…
