Some milestones – and a birthday!

With the Sharks taking on Griqaus down in Kimberley this weekend, let’s have a look at a few of the milestones coming up for the individuals involved.

This is, of course, a very young side, meaning that the achievements we’re looking at this week are generally more along the lines of senior debuts than they are the celebration 50 or 100 caps. That doesn’t mean they aren’t still important, though, since we all have to start somewhere. Our love of the black and white jersey – one which is, I trust, shared by the players, is such that we must surely celebrate each and every cap handed out.

Let’s start by warmly welcoming young Peet Marais to the senior ranks – the 21-year-old lock will, we hope, earn his first senior cap if he comes off the bench this evening. It’s a big day for his brother, Jandre, as well, who will be starting for the first time this week. Jandre has already earned three caps coming off the bench this season and was particularly impressive in the 60 minutes he played last week. The Sharks coaches will be looking for him and Anton Bresler to repay the faith shown in them by putting in big performances in Kimberley tonight.

Dale Chadwick earns his 5th senior cap for the Sharks this evening, in another small milestone on the way to bigger things. Chadders has taken his chance superbly so far this year – brought into the starting lineup as an 11th-hour replacement for Eugene van Staden against the Bulls, he played so well that the more experienced van Staden isn’t able to unset him now. Great stuff, Chadders… next is double figures.

In terms of tries, two players are looking at milestones, should they be able to cross the chalk tonight. Stefan Terblanche is chasing his 40th Currie Cup try for the Sharks, while Jacques Botes is in line to score his 30th.

We’d also like to finish off by wishing a very happy birthday to reserve scrummie Charl McLeod, who turns 28 today. Many happy returns, Charlie – hope you can celebrate with a memorable victory tonight.

I don’t think you can call it faith if all our others locks are either Injured, overseas or just coming back from the Boks.

  • Today is not only the 5th of the month, but also the 5th day of the week (in the western world anyway).

And the 5th letter of August, kinda looks like a five too. 😯

    August is the 8th month of 2011. 8 + 1 + 1 divided by 2 also gives you 5. 😯

Coincidence? I think not. Can only mean one thing. Aliens built the pyramids. 😉
