Bad news continues for Crusaders

The Crusaders will hear this week where the mercurial Sonny Bill Williams will be playing next season, as he has told his All Blacks team mates that he will not run out for the Crusaders next year. This comes as a double whammy to the Crusaders as it was also confirmed this week that the AMI Stadium will not host the Crusaders rugby team in 2012.

The speculation is that Williams will move north to Auckland where his mother is based. This will play nicely into the hands of the Blues, as they have recently lost Jared Payne to Ulster. The Crusaders have some talented centres in reserve as Robbie Fruean, Ryan Crotty, Adam Whitelock and Tom Marshall will be playing for two spots available in the starting line-up.

Should this deal happen, the Blues will have an even stronger backline than they had this year as they have also recently signed Ma’a Nonu and Piri Weepu.

Engineers have confirmed that one of the AMI Stadium’s stands will have to be demolished, and while the future of the stadium as a whole is still uncertain, there are a few options to try save the landmark. This decision will be taken over the next few months, and with this taking time, the stadium has been ruled out of hosting any rugby next year.

This means that the Crusaders will have to find an alternate ‘home’ ground for the 2012 Super Rugby season, which results in a massive drop in income for the franchise as the other grounds available to them cannot seat as many people as the AMI Stadium.

  • AMI stadium is probably more of a loss. SBW is very high maintenance. Also when facing hard tackling backs get himself “injured” very quickly eg. against the Blues. He took one hit and walked off. I am sure he wil do so until he stops “Boxing”. I say this because I am not sure if you can call what he does boxing. ( Oops I am middle aged and overweight he might challenge me.)I read on the web site today that when the Crusaders travelled to SA his manager had to be tacken along and he then helped SBW which boxing training, which is disruptive to the team. So yes he is great unloading in the tackle, but is he worth the prima donna treatment??? I for one feel he is too much of a show pony and I think he will head to the Chiefs as at the Blues he will have to fight it out with Nonu for a starting spot and he is playing second fiddle to him in the AB team.

  • @Dynamite (Comment 1) : hope he moves to the chiefs we could really use a player of his standard in the midfield

  • @Dynamite (Comment 1) :

I think you may be being a little harsh on SBW

… i think you will find he is anything but disruptive to the Crusaders environment and definitely no prima dona.

I have also heard the Waratahs are in the race for his signiture for next year as well.

    ….Hamilton or Sydney… Hmmmmmm 😆

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 4) : Read the article written by Richard Knowler on the stuff web site and you will see not only do I think he comes with a lot of baggage. I just think that when the going really gets tough he doesn’t want to be in the front line. I think he took one Benson Stanley hit and called it the night. Richard Knowler says for a minor injury whereas other are expected to try run it off or tough it out. Remember he comes with a hefty price tag as well as conditions!! in his contract. I still think your Richie McCaws and Daniel Carters are worth more to the Crusaders. Talking about Carter boy was he on fire against the Wobblies, his general play as well as his defence, I think he saved 2 tries from being scored. I see that the AB’s say they have a year contract with SBW whereas the Waratahs say he only has a verbal agreement with the AB’s. Interesting times ahead once again. WHO WILL SBW SIGN WITH??

  • @Dynamite (Comment 5) :

I do see where Richard is coming from, obviously he is not of a McCaw or Carter but he is a fairly handy midfielder that would not look out of place beside a Nonu, Kahui or Rob Horne.

I think he is great for the game, and think he has taken Rugby Contracts to a whole new level, not too many can demand the conditions he does.

I favour the Blues for his signiture at this stage. 😯

    However will be interesting.

Looking forward to the game on the weekend against the Aussies. 😎

  • SBW is an awesome player, but he seems to move around quite a bit from union to league and between sides within those different codes.

That said he is no shrinking violet and any team who gets him should consider themselves very fortunate.

Just as an aside: evander holyfield was a linebacker for the atlanta falcons but decided to call his pro football career quits and concentrate on his pro boxing career. And what a humble person.!
