Lambie starts at centre

Pat Lambie will return to the inside centre position he last occupied during last year’s Currie Cup as the Sharks name an experienced side to take on Western Province at Newlands on Friday night.

Ryan Kankowksi has been left out of the team – a sure indication that he will be needed by the Boks against Australia this weekend, while other players from last week’s match 22 to miss out include Ross Cronje, Mark Richards, Sibusiso Sithole, Meyer Bosman and Peet Marais.

In a reshuffled front row, Eugene van Staden will start at tighthead prop, in a direct switch with Wiehahn Herbst who will be on the bench. In the second row, Ross Skeate is fit again and comes in for Jandre Marais to partner Anton Bresler. Marais, who made his first start last week, will be on the bench, replacing his brother who drops back to the under 21 side. Marcell Coetzee is retained at blindside flank, in an unchanged loose trio with Jacques Botes and captain Keegan Daniel. Dale Chadwick and Craig Burden retain their places in the pack as well.

Charl McLeod takes over from Cronje in the number 9 jersey, with Conrad Hoffmann providing scrumhalf cover off the bench. Fred Michalak is retained at flyhalf, with Lambie joining Stefan Terblanche in midfield. Bok wingers Odwa Ndungane and Lwazi Mvovo will start along with Louis Ludik in an experienced back three. Adrian Jacobs and Marius Joubert have been included on the bench, along with under 21 loose forward Francois Kleinhans, who takes over from Kankowski in the number 19 jersey. Kyle Cooper makes up the 22 as reserve hooker.

  • So it is win at all costs then? Bugger messing about with the youngsters shifting them about at will… πŸ˜•

Well it makes for a stronger team having Lambie at inside centre, but I WILL NEVER agree with this at all. WHY DO WE MESS ABOUT WITH YOUR YOUNGSTERS? WHY? πŸ˜• This will never allow him to be our number one fh after this wc if Sharks keep messing Lambie about in every position they wish to play him. Just not good enough Plum.

  • With Stefan at outside centre why the heck we have Lambie at inside centre? Stefan just gonna kick it away or hold onto it. Adi should have started at 13. Or even try out Sithole there.

Stihole was one of our better players last week too and gets dropped. Just have to shake my head really.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 11) : Who says Lambie is a dead cert for world cup mate? I have counted 25 players that are dead certs. Then we will need another two loose forwards there and probably a prop and a wing. Lambie could just make it but somehow I doubt it. They have two fh’s in Butch and Morne. Ruan can also play fh. Aplon to cover at FH.

If it was me I would have Lambie in the wc squad cause we know he can play all positions equally well. fh, fb and inside centre. But doubt they are thinking that.

For now I am thinking of AFTER this world cup. If we just play in in sommer any position he will NEVER EVER get that fh position at the Boks after this wc. Cause Jantjies and Sias (spelling) are playing there and only there.

Eish!!!!!!!!!!!!! We at the Sharks sure know how to mess our young talent about. Why is Sithole not there? He was one of the better players last week as well?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 17) : I hope so, cause Lambie and Deysel were our best Boks on tour. How Lambie got dropped in favour of Morne is just bloody frustrating. NOW we send the wrong message to PdV by playing Lambie at inside centre and put our French Shark player there instead…. 😈

  • @rekinek (Comment 19) : I feel the same. They have all the utility players there. Aplon, Hougaard and Ruan. Doubt PdV will select Lambie. What a pity. Cause he really played very well on tour.

Read on Sports24 that Eddie Jones felt the same. Said it was very harsh to drop Lambie when he played so well. But he reckons Lambie best position is FB. I think he plays all 3 positions equally well, but think FH is where he should be playing for us.

Ag, just gonna forget about it for now. Feel for the youngster. Another one the Sharks just mess about. Also why drop Sithole? WHY? We must back our youngsters. I would have brought in some youngsters from our u21’s to play centre. We have to try them out now for the S15.

Agree if we have now moved Lambie to inside centre then Adi surely had to have started at outside centre. Otherwise moving Lambie to 12 seems a waste to me.

I know some are inexperienced but they need more game time not less to get better. I would have played Sithole. He never deserved to be dropped.

I’d rather have him at 12 for the reminder of CC tan Meyer. I would also move Stef back to 15 because IMO it is his best position but it may happen should Adi force his way into starting 15.

Regarding Lambie and WC – he is definitely not considered as a starter in any position but his versatility still could be a plus, but there are quite a few mr versatiles already. add to your list steyn and de villiers.

  • Personally I think the brouhaha regarding Lambie’s shift to 12 is unwarranted. While I’m in agreement that Pat’s best position is 10, there is a lot of overlap between the 10 and 12 positions nowadays, with the result that time spent in the 12 jersey will aid, and not detract, from his development as a flyhalf.

As I already mentioned on another thread, most great flyhalves spent some time in the inside centre berth playing alongside-, and learning from more experienced flyhalves, e.g. Giteau/Larkham, Carter/Mehrtens. I don’t for one instant see the time spent wearing 12 as having hurt their game.

Even Butch James spent time relatively late in his career playing outside of Gregor Townsend and Tony Brown, and he went on to play a key role in winning us a World Cup.

I honestly don’t see Lambie as the the type of player to be unsettled by the move either. The most important thing is all of this is just that the Sharks coaching staff be clear in their communication with him, so that he understands whether this is only a short-term arrangement (as I think it is), or whether Plum feels that his future is at 12.

The only gripe I have with all of this is that is that we’re still not working on finding a first-choice, long-term 12 for next year.

  • @rekinek (Comment 41) : Doubt Lambie is going to the wc. There are enough utility players. I was talking mostly about Lambie after this wc.

We have to have him playing in only one position for any Coaches to consider him at either fh, fb or 12. He is wasted as a utility player, after this world cup that is. He should get a position playing for Boks that he will make his own. The only way he will get that is if he plays for his franchise in that position.

  • 13 and 14 in this Sharks team is exactly why the Sharks are no longer deemed a threat on attack.

Im always expecting Stef to pull out his Zimmer frame at half time.

Not sending the right messages to our youngsters by continuing to play these old timers in what should actually be a trial competition for some of the younger guys.
The WC and TriNations has taken the focus off the CC for now and this would have been the perfect opportunity to play them.

The youngsters coming through, Cronje, Sithole, Lindeque, Richards etc was the only thing keeping me interested in the CC this year.
Id rather watcht the U21 side actualy. Now that is one exciting backline.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 82) : I tend to agree. But let’s keep in mind that we didn’t really have a flyhalf when JLP was signed. So I can understand that one. But Meyer and Marius are ridiculous. Let’s buy a has been and pay hit to sit him on the bench while we use on of our fullbacks to play centre. πŸ™„

  • @Ben (Comment 84) : I know we were a little short at 10, but JLP? I would far rather have seen Plum back a youngster or two from our own ranks. Imagine how much more mature a player like Guy CronjΓ© could have been if he had played some S15 by now.

They probably bought JLP because he can cover centre as well, but at what cost? While we are paying him he is sitting on his arse and a promising youngster like Stemmet is playing for Griquas.

Lambie actually said in an interview in sasi that he doesn’t mind where he plays.still doesn’t know which is his best pos..think it dec 10 issue of sasi.

  • @bergshark (Comment 154) : Am aware that he doesnt mind where he plays but surely that would be between flyhalf and fullback…..not so sure he was thinking of the centres when he declared this.

Its probably unfair of us to be discussing another captain when Keegan has only had the job for a month.

  • @John Galt (Comment 74) : You can take the Cronje twins off that list because they havent been offered contracts for next year. Guy has been playing for Rovers for most of the year so havent been injured for a while. The Sharks only allow exceptional players to come through the junior ranks (ie Lambie, Steyn). The type that will represent the boks. It doesnt help when they buy average players from the blue bulls and free state (ie Bosman and JLP). Also a player like Stefan is way past his use by date and should be kicked to the curb if he isnt going to call it a day. The u21 centres should be getting a run instead of oupa! Anyway its sad that so many young sharks are being lost through the cracks. Most of these youngsters beat WP with Johan Sadie and other future boks. The sharks arent taking younsters to the next level.
