Sithole to bolster under 21s?

The likely return of a pair of Bok wingers to the Sharks starting lineup should see Sibusiso Sithole released to join Sean Everitt’s under 21 side for this weekend’s game against pace-setting Western Province.

Sithole, who was one of the few players to enhance his personal reputation during the bad loss to Griquas last weekend looks set to lose his place in the squad as Sharks coach John Plumtree looks to bolster his run-on side with experienced players for the trip to Newlands on Friday night. Odwa Ndungane and Lwazi Mvovo are both expected to start and with players like Marius Joubert, Adi Jacobs, Stefan Terblanche, Louis Ludik and Mark Richards all in contention at outside centre and fullback, it makes sense to let Sithole earn game time in the age-group competition, where together with scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, he should add huge composure and attacking threat to an already-impressive under 21 backline containing flyhalf Fred Zeilinga and in-form centres Heimar Williams and Piet Lindeque.

In other team news, it appears likely that Conrad Hoffmann will be fit to play some role against his former team this weekend, while the uncertainty regarding Ryan Kankowski’s availability should see the Bok eighthman bracketed with someone – possibly Marcell Coetzee – when the team is announced later today. Expect Francois Kleinhans to come back into the squad should Kankowski be required by the Boks, with the Baby Bok opensider also released to the under 21s if Kankowski is not needed to take on the Australians this weekend.

The Bok lineup will only be announced on Thursday, meaning the Sharks may be forced into a late reshuffle.

  • Sithole will be so grateful for ball this weekend, let’s hope the centres swing it to him

Unfortunate that he cannot further his reputation in the senior squad, but he will get his chance..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : yes – he will. He’s done very well and it’s the right call now to let him play under 21s and get (even) better.

Mvovo and Ndungane will add HUGE experience for us this weekend

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) :

We need Mvovo in the team.. Im hesitant with Odwa, he is great but lacks the impact that Sithole or Richards make.. and pace!

But experience is what we need. Maybe play Richards and Mvovo and play Ndungane either at fullback (at the expense of Ludik) or from the bench, where he covers wings and fullback.

The team announcement will be interesting.

  • On current form none of the above mentioned centres should be playing.
Joubert should get some gametime in club games, Meyer Bosman has used up his lives.
Would start with Mcleod/Michalak/Lambie/Adi and Mvovo/Ndungane/Terblanche in the back.
Ideally Id like to see one or two of those under 21 centres get game time against possibly the Leopords or similar opposition.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Ludick played reasonably well last week. Would rather not move him around just as yet.
With Riaan Viljoen coming I wonder if they have plans to try Ludick at 13?

  • Why would they drop Sithole and retain Richards?

  • @Big Fish (Comment 6) : we don’t know for a fact that they have retained Richards… Mvovo and Odwa are definitely starting at wing… Richards is one of only a number of candidates fighting for 2 bench spots.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 6) : Good question but im guessing it has something to do with Richards “versatility”.
Sithole and Mvovo would be dangerous on the wings.

  • Really pissed off about this. Sithole was one of the stand-outs in the side and is one of our best players, including the shambolic performance against Griquas. He deserves at least a place on the bench!

  • @Big Fish (Comment 6) :

Im not sure if Richards is still U21? Im not sure, but that could explain it?

But your argument is sound, I cannot understand dropping the more influential player..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : I’d keep Oddas at the back for you guys, look at Conrad Jantjes at the moment, he aint everyones cup of tea but he is playing some good rugby and having his experience at the back is great for WP.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 12) :

I agree.. Im just hesitant to pop him on the wing with the other players’ pace..

I would, and this is left-field thinking, play Ludik in the centres. It could work, what do we have to lose..

  • I would rather have Sithole starting! How can u drop Sithole’s pace and skill and replace it with Odwa all his experience is for naught when he lacks the pace 👿

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 15) : think about what you’re saying, please…

Odwa is a seasoned Bok who has NEVER let us down at any level… and you want to drop him for a guy who has played (admittedly very well) for a total of about 200 minutes in Currie Cup?

  • @Megatron (Comment 27) : I’m sure he will… anyway, it’s not really like he’s been dropped. I think the under 21 guys knew that they were just in the side to hold the fort until the Boks returned and they did a superb job of that.

At least now Plum knows he can throw Sbu straight into a senior game at any stage without it weakening his side… Odders and Lwazi need to watch out, cos the youngsters are breathing down their necks.
