The Boks have called up a 4th reinforcement as cover for the match against the All Blacks.

Ashley Johnson joined the Springboks in Port Elizabeth yesterday afternoon as additional back-row cover for the coming weekend. Johnson probably joins the Springboks as cover for Danie Rossouw after Rossouw left the field injured during the defeat to Australia on Saturday.

SARU contacted the Sharks and Bulls last week to secure the release of Patrick Lambie, Lwazi Mvovo and Chiliboy Ralepelle for the test in port Elizabeth this weekend.

Johnson was a late inclusion to the Cheetahs team that lost to the Lions last week after spending the early part of the week training with the Springboks. Johnson’s unavailability for the Free State Cheetahs should not be a major concern as it was also announced that Juan Smith was released to the Cheetahs for Currie Cup Rugby.

  • Lets be glad its Ahley, with Matfield as captain this weekend it would’ve been Stegmann if he wasn’t injured.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 1) : I have a feeling this will be until Thursday only and then he will be released again, just as he was last week.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 5) : If we`re honest with ourselves we should really back wp against the lions this weekend.

We need someone to hold them back after our embarrassing defeat in KY . . . 🙄
