Bismarck, Alberts in line for Bok starts

According to early reports coming out of the Springbok camp this week, John Smit looks set to be rested for Saturday’s test against the All Blacks in Port Elizabeth, regardless of his state of fitness or health. The Bok captain is somewhat doubtful for the weekend, having sat out yesterday’s training session with flu, but the indications are that Victor Matfield will lead the side out this weekend whatever the case.

With Smit having played most of the last three test matches, the skipper looks likely to sit out this one entirely, with Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis starting at hooker and Chilliboy Ralepelle on the bench. In another interesting move, it appears as though Willem Alberts- now finally over the shoulder injury that’s been plaguing him for some time – will be given a chance to cement a World Cup berth by being named to start at blindside flank, in place of Danie Rossouw.

Pat Lambie may well come in at fullback to replace Frans Steyn, while Morne Steyn is, according to the same reports, likely to start at flyhalf ahead of Butch James in a move that, frankly, has madness written all over it.

  • 1 step forward….2 steps back. Unbelievable…
Forwards should be okay, although Guthro may struggle initially. Great for Alberts and Bissy…..

But M Steyn? Oh my hat!

  • This is 1 of the issues I have when Matfield leads the Boks…..M Steyn then becomes a fixture…..remember Scotland last year? Lambie was by all accounts in the frame and vetoed by Matfield if rumours are to be believed…..in came M Steyn…

  • Hey Ben, I agree re: Butch. I thought he played well considering the amount of gametime he’s had recently.
    Steyn is a liability.

  • @wpw (Comment 6) : steyn is a bang broek who doesn’t want to take ANY contact. watch him – he always stands deep & after shuffling the ball as quickly as he can ducks away everytime. linebreaks to morne are like kryptonite to superman

  • The number 1 reason the Boks lost to Aussies was a lack of match fitness, so why why why would anyone want to change the team again and rob those guys of match fitness? Obviously injury forces some changes but other than that leave the team as is! In the 1st half against the Aussies our defense was solid, we dominate possesion and territory but just could take our chances and the Aussies did defend well. This is not rocket science…Lambie in for injured Steyn, Bismarck in for Smit as he needs gametime, ALberts in for Rossouw as he also needs game time. Leave the rest!

And then to add further insult, the Boks will win this game against the weakened All Blacks and all the Steyn supporters will be crowing about how good he is. 😕

And a few will be crowing “SEE!!!! John Smit didn’t play and we won.” 😕

  • Bissie and Alberts will definitely bolster the forwards. Alberts should be back to his best after a well earned rest. Lets just hope that Lambie can also show his worth in the 15 jersey like we know he can. Go Sharks Bokke!!!!

  • 😕 Ek’s n bul  BUT i am not sure morne steyn should start.
It’s his slooooow distribution skill i am worried about.
His tactical kicking leaves alot to be desired.

He should be in pretoria with vlokkie and slaptjips practising his running game.

It’s no secret that jean de villiers and jacques fourie prefer butch in my honest opinion.

  • Gio Aplon is not good enough to start he may have a groot heart BUT size yes size counts he struggled on saturday.

Lambie has BMT and the whole world knows he is the business at 10 even at 15.

His problem might be lil speed but he will do a fantastic job.

  • @Ben (Comment 2) : according to staats missed 5 out of 10 tackles. total missed tackles by the boks 28. Butch the main culprit.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 11) : Agree totally.

We should have been consistent and played the same team as last week, except for where players are injured. Said this on RT as well. The players need more game time together not less. Now we have too many changes for this week. Really daft if you ask me. The team will never gel by the time we have to play Wales.

I also would have started with Deysel and not Alberts. Bring Alberts off the bench, cause he has not played for sometime and rather see how that shoulder goes with about 25min in the last half.

Lambie starting then we should have had Butch playing and not Morne.

Anyhow this is our team just have to put our full support behind them.

  • @rekinek (Comment 24) : I think you got the stats a little wrong, Butch made 10, missed 5, so he missed 5 out of 15 tackles, Spies missed 4 out of 10. Not great stats either way tho.

  • @rekinek (Comment 24) :

I’ve learned not to take those stats seriously.

After the test against NZ they reckoned Lambie only kicked once all game and that Adi missed about 3 tackles!!

The clincher was Stegmann attending something like 15 rucks! I have it on good authority that he was actually NOT on the field all game!! I’m serious!! 😈 😆

  • @wpw (Comment 33) : i know… but these ones seem to corroborate what I saw on the field. The boks were falling off Ausies they was no first line defence to speak of. Yes committed second but you ask yourself was it really necessary.
