Boks to Face the B-Blacks in PE

The team to take on the All Blacks this coming Saturday has just been announced.

Young Lambie will take over the Fullback position as expected. No changes were made in the rest of the backline with the exception of Morne Steyn slotting in at the Flyhalf position.

Great to see Willem Alberts in the starting 15 and Bissie getting a well-deserved start. And it seems Johnson might be utilised afterall!

BOK TEAM:

Pat Lambie, JP Pietersen, Jacque Fourie, Jean De Villiers, Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Fourie Du Preez; Pierre Spies, Willem Alberts, Heinrich Brussow, Victor Matfield (c), Bakkies Botha, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Gooiegooi Steenkamp.

Bench: John Smit, Beast Mtawarira, CJ Vd Linde, Danie Rossouw, Ashley Johnson, Francois Hougaard, Butch James.

  • I would have preferred to see Butch starting again. If he is the 1st choice 10 he should have had this game to gel with the team before the WC.

  • Steyn in for Butch makes no sense, neither does Johnson and Rossouw for Mostert and Deysel. And why take Mvovo all the way to PE – is he visiting family?
Does this mean Deysel and Mvovo available for the Sharks on Friday? and Jacobs?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 31) : Rossouw played both games overseas and last weekend- and he looked well average. If he is looking for options then give Mostert a decent go! But i agree that a fit Rossouw covering lock and only lock is good on the bench!

  • @Zibbie (Comment 33) : These same Lions players only looked average during the Super rugby season. There is a big difference between Currie Cup quality and international quality.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 34) : Agreed, Rossouw wasn’t anything more than average but he’s better from the bench and makes more of an impact playing lock (in my opinion). If he doesn’t perform this weekend Mostert *may* be a better option come the World Cup

@SheldonK (Comment 35) : I’m pretty confident Josh Strauss and Jaco Taute will make the step up when the time comes. Jantjies has the potential but needs more consistency in his game.

thinking about it they didnt look all that averages . we won a few games went close a few times . . i think we were outplayed totally in bout 2 games ? i think with a bit more experience you will see this team develop into a good team . im just hoping we can hang on to these players

  • @vanmartin (Comment 37) : @Zibbie (Comment 38) : Josh Strauss would make the step up but with Burger,Brussouw,Alberts,Deysel,Kankowski,Johnson all seemingly in the mix I dont see where he will get a chance?
Im not convinced about Taute- he looked pretty average at u20 WC…but maybe he was just not used to the structures etc. I still think he would make a better 13 than FB.
The end of year tour selection will be interesting…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 40) : I can think of a few others you haven’t even mentioned but it’s a long rugby season next year and loose forwards tend to be overused. As in Mostert’s case, Josh Strauss may get a bok call-up sooner than we think.

Taute was average at the U20 WC but so were most of the team. It may be a dip in form or the team not gelling properly. I’d like to see him at 13 though.

Just playing devils advocate here but who said that Butch, or Steyn for that matter, is our preferred 10 for the WC? As far as I got I know it is just an assumption made because Butch was part of the players in rehab.
