After five rounds of Currie Cup action, let’s have a look at the standings in the Fantasy League over on www.justrugby.net and see how the various managers are faring.

The overall round honours this week went to p pahlad, who came in top with a score of 468.75, once the MVP bonus was included. In a generally low-scoring round, thanks to the paucity of tries in most of the games, the Full House bonus proved telling. Second this round was Lassy Lion, just 20 points behind p pahlad before the MVP bonus was added, with another member of the clan, r pahlad, coming in third. Dwellies Sharks and our very own Franshark completed the top five in the round.

On the overall standings, our local expert, Pieter Bergh, remains on top, with his team “Te Maklik” now holding a 60-point lead over Byrne99 in second place. I’d like to think that having a current provincial coach at the head of the standings does at least emphasise that knowing your rugby is a strong pre-requisite to success in this competition! Zibbie, Mr Bones and the somewhat lauaghably-named Maak Die Bulle Almal Bokke make up the last three places in the overall top 5 this week.

In a round where few tries were scored, the player scores are on the low side. Few would be surprised to see match-winner Fred Michalak come in on top this round – again – with 27 points, including the oh-so-sweet Match Altering Kick bonus thanks to the pressure penalty that sunk Province in the dying minutes on Friday night. With Griquas the only side to rack up a try bonus point in the round, three of their players hold the next three spots. Jean Stemmet (oh, how the Sharks must be kicking themselves!), Riaan Viljoen and Wilmaure Louw came in in positions 2 through 4, with Lions fullback Michael Killian in 5th this week.

Looking at the five best players overall, two things are not all that surprising. The first is that they’re all halfbacks and the second that Michalak is the best of them by some margin. Despite a wobble against Griquas, the Frenchman is turning in big scores week after week and while having him in your team is hardly a differentiator, I’d say that NOT having him will certainly count against any manager keen on taking the spoils this season. Jano Vermaak is still clinging on to second place, mostly as a result of a huge score in round 2 that is still skewing the numbers a little, but Demetri Catrakilis is now just one point behind and sure to overtake him soon. Burton Francis and Sias Ebersohn are fourth and fifth respectively.

There have again been some injuries to take note of, with Deon Stegmann ruled out for about a month with a broken cheek and Dewald Potgieter out for at leas this weekend’s game. Alilstair Hargreaves and Juan Smith should both be available for selection for their respective teams this week, but remember that Alistair Hargreaves, Lwazi Mvovo and Chilliboy Ralepelle have been called back into the Bok squad.
