During the build up to the Rugby World cup some news for the 2012 Super Rugby competition seems to be going by unnoticed.

With the 2012 fixtures likely to be released next week, after the SANZAR board approves the final draw. With this some minor details of the fixtures have started coming to light.

We all (well most of us) know that next year will see the introduction of a mid season Superugby break while test matches are played in the SANZAR nations. One of the more interesting details coming to light is that none of the South African teams seem set to travel to Australasia after the mid season break in July.

This would mean that most of the SA sides will be traveling pretty early in the long season while they are relatively fresh. It does mean we will probably be ending the season with a string of local derbies. Whether that is good or bad is debatable.

Meanwhile it also seems as if the Waratahs have received approval to play Sunday afternoon/evening matches in Sydney because of local Australia sports network Fox Sport prefering to have the Reds play in the Saturday prime time slot. This means we might have some Sunday morning matches again.

  • All of a sudden the Reds are the cream of the crop. 🙄 I don’t mind Sunday matches as long as they are few and far between.
