The Springbok 30-man World Cup squad has just been announced.

The Sharks have 8 representatives in a largely predictable group, led by John Smith and Victor Matfield. There were very few surprises, all-in-all, with the inclusion of Sharks winger Odwa Ndungane and former Stormers loose forward Francois Louw perhaps the most surprising.

The other Sharks players to make the squad are Willem Ablerts, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, Beast Mtawarira, Pat Lambie and JP Pietersen. Lwazi Mvovo and Jean Deysel were both unlucky to miss out, as was former Sharks lock Gerhard Mostert. A huge number of players who have worn the black and white in the past did make the cut, though, including Ruan Pienaar, Butch James, Francois Steyn and Johann Muller.

Here is the full squad.

Willem Alberts The Sharks
Gio Aplon Western Province
Bakkies Botha Blue Bulls
Heinrich BrΓΌssow Free State

  • Louw, Ndungane not good enough, there are better players. This is an ok squad but they won’t win the WC, not the best available side in SA

  • Bloody stab in the back to Deysel there. How he never got selected before Flouw is a bloody mystery. He was in top form overseas. Flo played no part in the Tri-Nations and gets selected. πŸ™„ really feel for Deysel.

In future no players playing overseas should ever get selected none. They come back here out of shape/condition and way below our rugby standards. Only players playing here should be considered.

Deysel if you ever read this blog. We at the Sharks are still proud of you. Should have had a wc cap on tonight.

  • @McLovin (Comment 24) : Some players played their bloody hearts out thinking they had a chance of selection.

Then in walks Flo not played a game. Damn just not good enough. Deysel was outstanding on the away tour. Must have believed the coaches when they said some would get selected. The coaches knew damn well before the players left who WAS selected. Just let some put their bodies on the line against a powerful AB side and Aussie side to allow our top Boks to rest. If they wanted Flouw he should have been on the away tour like the others. Only fair that don’t you agree? Deysel got stabbed in the back. He was superb and should have made the wc squad not Flo.

  • After Cape Town leaked the Flouw selection earlier today, Johann Muller turned out to be the biggest selection surprise for me.

Johann brings good leadership qualities but is also an untried player this international season. However unlike Flo he was set to play on tour before he got injured.

So no Ashley Johnson then as Rob predicted second time around.

  • @Ben (Comment 43) : Just to think only last year he was carrying the bags for our Sharks team at the start of the of Super14. He only got selected cause of a injury. Since then has never looked back. He became a SuperRugby player and then a Springbok now in the world cup squad. Jeez, bet even he never thought from that first Super game against the Landers that he would be here right now in his career going to the world cup. It is brilliant to see a youngster doing so well.

It all came from getting chance to show what he could do all cause one player got injured. Plum just never selected him before that. Now he is going to the World Cup. Brilliant. Feel awesome for him. One of our most gifted players to have come out of KZN.

Just shows give some of the youngsters a chance. We will never know what we have in them if we don’t. We could have missed a massive talent had we not given Lambie a chance. Then like I said it only came through a injury his chance. What a superb player he is.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 48) : I feel they did put their bodies on the line. Our Top Boks never went. they were in rehab remember…hehe. Resting. Those players that played overseas allowed them to do so. Especially playing a powerful AB side. Not easy when not a team. They where just thrown together.

Anyhow. Just gonna get behind our Boks now. Only disappointed that Deysel is not there. He really should have made the squad. feel for him.

Who knows Flo could just be the star of this wc. Though think our trump card is Brussow. If he gets injured our chances will fall plenty.

    Out of here now.

    Cheers everyone.

    Go Bokke.

  • @Puma (Comment 52) : I’m not arguing that they didn’t. You made the statement that the coaches let the players put their bodies on the line. I’m saying every player knows what they signed up for – it comes with the territory. You make it sound as though the coaches expected something from them that’s not required. I’m just reminding you it most definitely is – whether the coaches know beforehand who they’re taking to the WC is irrelevant.

  • Odwa a surprise considering; but I think they see a dependable, no nonsense player for the lesser tests, better suited to soggy pitches than Mvovo – who based on form and ability will be there before soon, his one on one defence aint bud, but Odwa’s cover defence and dependibility ticked more boxes… I feel for Deysel, but blindside was well covered in Alberts and Schalk, openside needed backup and Flouw gets the nod because he is quicker than Wollie, and bigger than Keegs… IMO – good squad, no bolters… We have the plan, it comes down to player utilization now i.e. Barney VS Bismarck

  • THIS IS A TOP SQUAD!!!

Of course I question Odwa above Mvovo, Muller above Mostert and Louw above Deysel (the latter being a more direct replacement for Smith, while we already have Brussouw and Schalk as Opensiders).

However, intermingled with the question-marks above and the sympathy for Adi Jacobs, I also applaud the dropping of guys like Kirchner and Olivier, as well as the inclusion of Lambie.

Watch out world – HIER KOM DIE BOKKE!

  • Got to be happy with that squad. The selection of Flo is very sensible as he is the next best opensider in SA and with Brussow having only played 70mins or so in a good few months, it would be ludicrous to expect him to play every game. And of course there is also the possibility of injury. What was a bit strange was that the Boks didn’t take him on the overseas leg of the Tri Nations and preferred Stegmann. At least they have seen sense and realised that Stegmann has not been able to make the step up.

For those of you criticising Flo’s selection. Ask yourself one question, have you seen all of his performances for the Boks? He has never let the side down and was even harshly dropped on the back of an awful TEAM performance, when he was actually one of the best players.

Initially I thought Odwa’s selection was a bit strange. However on reflection it could be a “safe” selection. The conditions in NZ are never that great and Odwa is an experienced campaigner who has played both wing and fullback and is solid in the wet and slippery conditions. He very rarely let’s anyone down.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 56) : This is merely speculation on my part: Odwa probably got the nod ahead of Mvovo based on his previous Bok experience, his work rate and his defence – in a competition so reliant on good defence that was probably the deal sealer. Still, I can’t see to many Sharks fans too upset with this decision.

Flouw was probably picked because his considered more of an out an out fetcher as opposed to Johnson and Deysel. We saw how vital this ability is to the Boks in Saturday’s game. The coaches probably didn’t want to take any chances should Brussouw be injured again. Deysel is very unlucky. He didn’t put a foot wrong. Wish we could take him as a backup centre :). I’m sure he’d surprise us. Any outside chance that Keegan had to take the spot probably disappeared after his two yellow cards :(. I agree with Rob though – he would have been a good option. SA is blessed with a lot of loose trio talent so someone was always going to lose out here I guess.

Johann Muller is the more surprising choice as we haven’t had a chance to see him in any SH competition this year so it’s difficult to really tell if he’s up to it. I guess experience trumped youth but I’m sure he’ll be dependable.

  • Reckon Flouw has Brussouws performance over the weekend to thank for his selection.
HB’s influence on the game was immense and demonstrated the amount of ball that can be won by a specialist.
Sorry, as much as I like Deysel (and Johnson for that matter) they’re simply not nearly the poacher that Flouw is and play a different game.

Schalk has long since moved on from being a specilaist fetcher and is more likely than not going to be employed on the blindside.
No weakening of the side there but it leaves a back-up berth available on the openside.

Reckon Stegmann was the favoured man btu managed to play himself out of contention on the away leg to open the door for Flouw.

All in all one helluva squad and a very talented group of players.

Also surprising is the debate here over Flo – he deserves it.

Johan Muller, Guthro Steenkamp,Heinrick B,Skalk B, Frans Steyn,Flo, etc. All these players lack match fitness and are recovering from injury. These guys need game time. Can they recover to 100 % before and during the WC. I hope they can.

  • I have never been a huge Johann Muller fan even when he was still Sharks captain. He is probably the biggest surprise for me in the team.

I would have liked 2 or 3 more young players in the squad even if they didn’t play too many games just to get a feel of the SB setup. I suppose we are to conservative to try something like that.

Maybe Sadie instaed of Odwa and Elstadt/ Bresler instead of Muller

Greatly pleased by the inclusion of Odwa as opposed to Mvovo…

Not sure about Flo….he has not been on fire from what I’ve seen…but then again he could be a Percy case where he found form in Europe…

I think you’re spot on with that comment. After Brussouw’s performance on Saturday it again showed the value of a good fetcher and Flo is probably the 2nd best we have if you re looking purely at fetching ability. Although he is still some way behind the brilliant Brussow.

Doppies makes more line breaks per game than De Jongh ever has in Super rugby…
Doppies has an exceptional pass (which one would expect as a former scrummy)
Doppies has exceptional defense…he tackled Alberts 6 times 1-on-1 in the first Sharks – Lions game this year…and he knows J Fourie very well as they played together many times
Doppies steals more balls than most flanks in Super rugby…

He is just not flashy…a behind the scenes work horse…
A short time with the Bokke and you’d change your tune…

And this in spite of not been playing behind a half decent pack for some time…

  • I’d say well done to Odwa on his selection but my feeling is that he is the most average of average players around at the moment. There is no star quality or x-factor about his play. He would struggle to stand out in the Italian team.

But the selectors have rightfully taken defensive awareness and workrate into account in making this safe as houses decision to take him.

I’m sad that Lwazi could have offered more to convince the selectors that he is more worthy of a spot. Certainly 2 home tests with ZERO in the tries for column concerns me a little and Mvovo is a lot better bet to get you a 5-pointer.

It’s also disappointing that other wings like van den Heever, Basson, Mapoe and even Mjekevu haven’t shown any signs of improvement in the last 12 months to at least challenge for a spot in the final 30.

    Dear Sir
    SAD SAD DRUG STORY
Upon approaching my street corner dealer to purchase a fix last night, he informed me that he had sold his last package to a junkie named Ard Matthews earlier in the day.
He did however offer to sell me a size XL replica Springbok cap for R50.00, pointing out that the genuine product of identical quality would soon retail in Sportsmans Warehouse for R300.00. I turned down the offer. Little did I know at the time how rare a commodity this XL size cap, designed to fit larger a rugby forward-like head is.
